Yeah but the handyman thing. I did plumbing straight out of highschool, I know plumbing and I watch your channel because it hard for me to find channels about the subject that I may learn something from. That being said now I'm in my 40s and do mostly maintenance handyman stuff, not because of lack of know how but opportunity, plus I like it. It is really hard to find work because of the reputation of handyman and comments like the ones you made just perpetuate that. There is a lot of hacks out there claiming to be handyman, and that makes it hard on me too, but people need to know there's good ones out there as well and how to know the difference.
Was a plumber for 38 years and what you said was oh so true. Right before I retired we got a new apprentice. He came to work with knee pads, eye protection, back support, you name it he had it. As a young, just out of the military, and thought I could do it all. Now at 72 years old my body makes new noises daily. Love your videos.

Great video, Roger! I’m 17 and after I graduate high school, I am going to go full time as an apartment maintenance tech and then eventually specialize in plumbing. And don’t worry, I will strive to be a maintenance tech/handy man that does the job right, not just quick. And I very much feel that stigma around maintenance and plumbing. I often have done the same - told people I want to go into construction because it sounds more prestigious. I find it very difficult to say “I want to be a plumber”. Because of what some people might think. And I’m trying to become more confident in it. The few times that I’ve actually said “I want to be a plumber” I was pleasantly surprised. Most of my friends are extremely supportive. But occasionally you get that “ok you’re a looser” expression in return. But we just have to learn to ignore them. While they’re getting into a bunch of debt, I will be fixing leaks and stacking money. Thanks for the video man.
Bro I would recommend just going straight into plumbing. Say you start at 18 yrs old and by the time you have your hrs to take the test you'll be like 21 or 22 and be making some serious money
You got your head on right. Been plumbing almost 20yrs, and I make about 30k over the average income in my state. By the time your friends get out of college, you'll have a career. And not 50k plus in debt for a degree you can't use.

Just watched this and boy did you hit the nail on the head! I was a service plumber for 38 years in San Francisco and I have done all the things you just stated and then some. I never wore gloves or eye protection on sewer stoppages, I moved large heaters with no help at times and working under sinks was about the worse thing so wish I had a pillow that you talked about. Yeah I was young and dumb. When I was about to retire we got a new apprentice, he came with knee pads, elbow pads, eye protection and ear protection. I am 74 now and feeling exactly what you were saying about your back and knees. Thanks for all of your videos a lot of them bring back memories.

I do not understand why anybody would look down their nose at a plumber. You aren't just doing a job that's gross. You're doing a job that most people simply cannot do, because (and you know it!) It's a skilled trade! There's a reason you're as educated as you are, and I know it. You provide a value that I cannot, and I know it. And that's why when I have to hire a plumber, I'm not afraid to throw money at the problem. I need the problem to be fixed.
First year apprentice at 27. Love your videos. I like every video and I’m subscribed. You’re the kind of guy I’d like to work for, but my current employers are good people, even if they work us like dogs. I had my appendix removed and they kept me in the shop/warehouse longer than the dr required because they wanted to give me additional time to recover.

We have issues with handymen in our area. Biggest issue is that it's not fixed properly to begin with, leading to extra labor or materials being needed to repair the actual problem. We try to help the customer out financially in these situations, but it seems if handymen have touched it, it's going to lead to more work that needs to be done.
I understand where you're coming from I moved from NC to GA I was licensed plumber and I haven't got my license in GA yet but I started working remodeling apartments and now I hang tile lay floors, sheetrock work,install doors and windows and still do all the plumbing on the remodel jobs and now I have more work but I've Taken classes from Schluter to do tile work and make good money
Roger. I totally agree. I was on a job it was Thanksgiving morning and my daughter who is my first born; was at home with my wife while she was recovering from a c-section with our daughter I felt so guilty. But I still wake up and work 6 days a week to give my kids and wife a great life. It's hard work but worth every moment. Keep posting videos I actually have our apprentices watch your videos in the first weeks of employment. Thanks for sharing your knowledge

I know I’m a couple of years late on this one. I’m 63 years old and have been a plumber for 42 years now, I’ve had my own business for 28 years. Rodger hit the nail on the head with this, the aches and pains are so much worse now than 20 years ago. With that being said, I’m still out there doing it, at this point in my life, I pick and choose the jobs I take. But I’m still out there , and wouldn’t want to do anything else. Rodger, thank you for sharing your experiences.
I am a civil engineer and i have immense respect for mason, carpenter, tile fitter, bar bender, plumber and anything that gone into any ordinary residential building.
Plumbing is a hard job and i am not talking about work hours and labour required , i mean technically hard.
Does your pipes makes a lot of noise after your cistern starts filling again , is water stream uniform in your outlets, what about damping due to leaks. Does one of your tap stopes working when other is in use.

I remember one time I forgot to remove the test binky, and the grease waste came up through the floor. That was the gnarliest smell plus digging up a sump pump. Gnarly stuff!

You know Roger I gotta say that you shed some new light on plumbers. Most people don’t really think about plumbers and how important their job is, myself included. I like the voicemail, that was really funny. I’m an OTR flatbed truck driver and I get shippers all the time telling me that I put too much securement on different things. When I ask them how much experience they have securing things to a trailer, the answer is typically none. Its really annoying the job is done the right way and somebody has to undercut and put their opinion where it didn’t belong. I still love my job though, I just take it with a grain of salt. In any case, I like that you do things the right way, not the convenient way. Your integrity with your work is something everyone should strive for.
I carry a small swimming pool paddle board with me and throw it down on the ground whenever I have to kneel. Especially on gravel, which we have everywhere in AZ.

As a former aircraft maintenance engineer (a&p / ia for you Americans), we would often complain about making less money than most construction trades.
Much respect for plumbers though, especially after experiencing what happens when plumbing doesn’t work.

20 yrs into my own small business and I'm done. All I got was bad knees back pain from this trade. Sold my truck and tools and working in manufacturing for way less money, but I'm happy. Advice for anyone going out on their own, look out for your health and your money. Peace y'all.
I can relate to your “handyman” dilemma! Being a tow company operator, I get customers complaining about my price. They think that some weekend warrior “hot shot” truckers can provide the same safe service I can. Any ol’ Jimmy & Bobby with a pickup & a trailer thinks he’s a professional tow provider these days.

I need the motivation today.this is very tough work physically but (most do t think so) but a very mentally tough profession. I even had to tell my wife I'm not plunging toilets all day. I was an equipment operator before, I still work at catepillar on weekends on a casual basis but if still like the challenges of plumbing. No one understands (except plumbers) how much is involved in this profession. God bless you all and play safe!!!1

Talking about it being hard on the body brought back a recent memory. Close to a year ago we were roughing in a slab, and it was real cold and early, also dry. Hard compacted red clay too. I had a few lengths of 3" pipe over my shoulder, and as I went to step over the footing, it crumbled! I tried to jump to the other side so I wouldn't bust my a**. Well, as my foot hits the other side of the footing the other side crumbled as well. I fall like a ton of bricks. That red clay hit my ribs so hard it was like someone hit me with a bat. As I sat there wheezing in pain I realized nobody was around to check on me. I slowly get up out of the footing and see everyone laughing at me. Oh the joy of working with family.

Handyman don't go to school we actually took time to learn our trade and I'm same I'm a Master Plumber as apprentice I finished 2nd in the apprenticeship contest for plumbing which includes medgas , gas piping , Rough in , and trim , I won a mini o2 acetylene rig

Apartment maintenance. I go in to fix the kitchen sink. It took me a few minutes to realize it was a bathtub overflow he put on it.

Had to clear the Parents kitchen sink on Christmas!
Our regulations do not allow a situation to arise where you have to go under a house to clear a soil blockage, except if it is in a waste line. Waste lines carry effluent from a basin, shower, etc.
All soil lines, those from toilets, must have cleaning access outside of the house.
This is a great video. Going on my 37th year in the traits. 27 of those years I’ve been in business for myself. Reaping the benefits now as my oldest son is rapidly approaching his fourth year as apprenticeship program. It’s been such a blessing to see him want to get into the trades. He graduated high school with high honors. Math whiz Spanish whiz you name it he’s a whiz at it yet he still chose the trades. I know in the long run as long as he works smart and efficient that he will last in the trades. We’ve built a great family business and I’m glad to see him carry it on.

I understand what your saying about handymen. I however am licensed, insured and follow code. Maybe that's why people think I charge more than others. Not all handymen are shit bags. Many are though I do have to fix many chuck in a truck jobs

For the life of me I can not understand how people can look down on the people that litterally make our modern comfortable life possible.
Plumbers, farmers, garbage disposal and so on are the very basic for our society.

What sucks about doing plumbing in alaska is when people don't have a outside clean out and their line gets frozen with tampons and wipes. Try 2 50 gallon trash cans to collect the water as your jetting to thaw the line from a pulled toilet, then running the snake in to pull tampons and wipes out then jetting again til the line is thawed. I've spent over 12 hours on clearing 1 line with no outside clean out with a 150 foot frozen sewer line to the septic tank with tampons and wipes frozen in.
I have seen your post and I have a lot to say. I had a plumber come out because my pipes were leaking a little. I was at work and had this licensed plumber come and fix it. First he repaired it with Sharkbites and pex tubing. And he bent part of the copper piping on top of the heater and than said my hot water heater tank is leaking. From that point afterward he gives me a quote of $1700 for a new hot water heater and I realized I met a crook. Mind you I had a hot water heater that’s a power vent hot water heater which is easy to install. When I finally got enough money I made the repair myself and installed it myself. Because of that experience I have become Leary of plumbers and have done a lot of my repairs myself like removing a moen positemp cartridge which did not want to come out after 17 years because I remember the quote my plumber said which was the truck always get paid. I don’t like doing these plumbing repairs but because of my mistrust I do it myself.

I recently went to a call where the sewer was plugged and so was the upstairs toilet, that toilet was plum full of crap and toilet paper. Was kind of a hoader house, and fortunately there was a big ladle laying in the bath tub, I used their ladle to scoop stuff out lolol.

After two neck surgeries and 35 years of plumbing I came home one day hurting bad. My wife told me (tight butt, you've got the money and you work by your self, buy that power cart. One surgery is hard on you and cost much more.) I spent over $4000 dollars on a dolly that climbs stairs up and down. Water heaters and my sewer machine to a basement is easy now. Should have done it when I first seen them. Yong plumber's out there, protect your body, it's the only one you've got. One day your going to feel like us old farts when you get out of bed and wished you'd taken the time to taken better care of your selves.

I’d rather work on a nasty toilet than a kitchen sink. The stink of old disposal is stomach turning. Also it only took me twenty years and I had trashed knees, carpal tunnel, hernia, back issues, hearing loss, had to have the end of my finger sewed back on. I guess I’m an over achiever. Funny thing is my doctor looked at my list of complaints and said “you are either a plumber or a mechanic “. Ppe always, sure beats the alternative

With the introduction of tankless. Plumbers have the opportunity to broaden their horizons. Tankless’s are a discipline unto itself, especially in the repair dept. And don’t assume HVAC techs can fix either.

I’m 34 and just finished my apprenticeship.
I nearly became a plumber, but got an other apprenticeship then.
It doesn't matter, as I like plumbing too!
I won't do it now ofcourse.
Anyways all that rambling around....
I really respect plumbers. They are the maintenance workers of sanitization.
It's a hard job, it's an important job, but honestly, in my opinion technician jobs should generally be payed more than higher office jobs.
Why do I do this? I mean, for 44 years I've been doing this. It's not really the money. Though, if you're a good Plumber, you'll always have work. It's the challenge. The thinking and planning. Test? You don't like tests? Find something else to do. Plumbers test everything. All new construction has inspectors. ( tip; Always leave one nail plate off, just to get the inspector to feel good about how clever he is. Then he'll leave the rest alone)The meeting of mental acuity and physical dexterity. There's always something you've never seen. There's always new ways of doing things. Better ways. You go on auto pilot for too long and it'll jump up and bite you. Basically, it's interesting.It's not boring.
I am continuously learning. This is such a wonderful profession!
I don't really like the raging on handymen that much, there are some of us that aren't so bad. I go for premium handyman work and one man Reno's, I only do fixtures and finish plumbing when it's part of another job. It is more than legal here and I do a great job too, I'm not afraid to tell someone that I'm not comfortable doing something and to call a plumber either. Don't lump all of us in together I am licensed, insured and take care of my customers. I really enjoy the content.
a lot of this applies to being a mechanic as well.
I try and do everything myself but when I can’t I always go with a licensed technician.
Question. How would you go about hooking a utility sink up in a laundry/full bathroom? Its a 50's home.
The wall outlet is 1 1/4, the sink is 1 1/2. There is no downpipe reducer for the sink to trap from 1 1/2 to 1 1/4 to slip into the pee trap so the 1 1/4 wall outlet could be used by the 1 1/4 pee trap.
I ended up getting a 1-1/2" x 1-1/4" PVC SCH 40 M x F Bushing then used a dremel tool to open the bushing up to accept the 1 1/2 drain set up. I used a 1 1/2 to 1 1/4 reducer gasket on the 1 1/2 outlet as it was tighter on the pipe and thicker. With flange nut tight at the wall and 4 gallons of water in sink i pulled the drain plug, not a single leak at the wall..
My brother in-law has he’s own small plumbing business does new construction homes. He makes a killing he himself still works and has a hand full of guys under him, but he makes really good money.
I have three compressed discs in my neck. This is going to be a life long issue. I had to quit concrete work because of this. Would entering the plumbing trade be idiotic knowing I have this issue?

Funny same thing use to happen to me when I was single and used to get asked and told them I was a plumber now that I remember even my guys friends used to think the worse of it but funny how things work I all ways had money in my pocket and they didnt ...lol
