Amazing coincidence! Our Sensei just told us it's about time to start learning Shisochin, and this video will help tremendously. Thanks as always for the hard work you do!
Ah, thank you so much for the lovely comment, Jeff! Knowing our videos have use to others is truly an endless delight to us! You're going to love this wonderful kata, we just know it ✨
We are so happy to hear from you! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment, we so appreciate it. We are really hoping to visit Japan again in 2022 - hopefully we will get to see some of our youtube friends when we're there!
Very well executed. I remember in the early 1980's our brown belt colleagues used to train in Sisochin regularly - Jundokan GojuRyu, Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania and this kata is so similar.. I left training for about 4 decades now and this brings back fond memories :)
Ah, what a lovely comment to recieve! It is a testament to the global quality of Jundokan that the kata looks the same from Okinawa to Tanzania to South Africa!
Thank you Sensai, reguarding the level, I am in the UK studying Goju Ryu and we learn this as part of our first brown belt stripe. Your Dojo's excellent videos are appreciated
Ah, thank you so much for the kind words, Helen! We know there aren't a lot of Goju Ryu dojos in the UK - we've had many students emigrate there, and only 1 has found a Goju dojo. All the best for your next grading, and for your journey ahead 🌺
Thank you for this, training in the UK and need this for Shodan Ho. Great video as really helped with some of the transitions. Love all the content you post, thank you.
Ah, thank you for this truly lovely comment, David! Wishing you all the best for your grading - this is also the grading kata for our shodan-ho candidates. Please let us know how the grading went!
Hi Sensei, greetings from UK. At my club my Shihan teaches this for 3rd Kyu to 2nd Kyu. My club is Shotokan/Goju Ryu mix. I love listening to the crisp sound from your dogi, I could sleep to that its so calming along with your elegant movements. These videos really help with my home practice when I'm not training with Shihan. I just got my 3rd Kyu brown belt so I've literally just started learning the first half of this kata.
Ah, what a special message to recieve! Are you part of GKR? Many of our students that have ended up in the UK or Australia have found themselves in GKR, and they seem to be happy there :) We also introduce this at the same level, and it is such a wonderful Kata. Thank you for the lovely comment, and we hope to hear from you again on our channel soon!
Thank you! I was only shown this kata for one class a year ago and then they left me alone at it. This helps me a lot because I missed some finer details.
Oh no! This kata requires much study and guidance in the beginning, but what a beautiful kata it is! It is my personal favourite, and some of the stories say it was Miyagi Sensei's favourite too. Thank you so much for watching and commenting! We hope our video helps you fill in the gaps :) Best, Zoe
Very interesting and well taught. I live in Okinawa and have been practicing/teaching karate since 1970. I learned this kata in the US back in the mid 70's, but here in Okinawa, Shisochin is usually a kyu level kata, not a dan level kata. Other dojos might mix these up, but they are pretty close to this. I no longer teach at any dojo here, and I see all kata on the same level since learning the kata is only important if the bunkai is taught simultaneously. In this case, Shisochin is a very brutal kata worthy of dan rank, and I see much of the school systems of Okinawa as being more familial and political than practical. So keep doing what you are doing, and teach the corresponding omote and ura techniques at the same time to intermediate students and above. Well donel
This is such a lovely, thoughtful comment, and I am truly sorry for replying so appallingly late. The Kata order is mostly a construct to give students an idea of progress, but you are right - they are all enclosed and equal systems. After all, Shisochin is no more or less complicated than Seiyunchin, but it is more "senior" for no real reason. Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful words, and I hope to see more of your comments as I work through the backlog! Best, Zoë
@@GojuRyuKarateCentre I think for pure self defense Seisan, Shisochin, and Gekisai (the way I modified it) are the only kata a person would need to know.
Thanks! I did Goju in SA 1999 - 2005 (getting to 2nd kyu) before moving to UK. Stopped altogether when I emigrated as at the time I couldnt find a Jundokan dojo*, but have retainined 80% of my kata knowledge, and all my basics are still there. *No Jundokan here as we are different political lineage (will be my 3rd!). My Google skills have improved since then too ha! I have since started Jikishin Ju Jitsu and it has given me the hunger to dust off the karate skills and get back to training properly (Watching Kobra Kai on Netflix also may have nudged me lol). In the UK we are EGKA not Jundokan (I was Seiwa Kai up to Purple before changing clubs due to my sensei moving to Australia) so I am seeing some subtle differences in the katas and their video tutorials I've gotten from them so far aren't as in depth as yours (hand movements, rotating stances etc). This is the only kata I forgot most of but I think I've got it now after going through theirs and your tutorials - just practce, practice, practice from now on. I am working on getting back in decent shape (mobility and flexibility - my shiko dachi is awful right now) and awaking muscle memory before joining a dojo in March 2023 so that they don't drop me down too many belts (ideally stay at 2nd kyu). Thanks for helping me get back on the right path! Domo Arigato, Sensei!
Comments like this give us the energy to keep going! Thank you so much for sharing your history and insight, and taking the time to write such a thoughtful note. Interestingly in Shito-ryu, who's got this kata from our Goju-ryu, shisochin is usually spelled in kanji as 士操鎮 (warrior's tranquil town) instead of 四向戰 (a fight in four directions). As 操鎮 might be translated as a f-town in some Chinese context, I would think, if that's really a fight in four directions or... Oh, hi from Jundokan, too: shotei-zuki is up at the end (as you would lift a chin). :)

I’m so glad you ignored that crap about “high kata”. People want to mystify these forms to give the masses the impression that karate black belts they have some kind of “high knowledge”. These kata can be taught in any order at any belt level, that’s the reality. Just ego tripping and money making schemes😬. Keep being a myth buster, Sensei. 😀
Sanchin, for example, is the first and last kata. It should be taught early because it takes *so long* to get even a toehold on what it means and demands of the body. To only teach and test it at black belt level is way too late. That's a nice new title for our little channel - karate mythbusting! You are too kind :)
