This is so helpful and so encouraging, thank you Katie. I am preparing for my first solo exhibition of illustrations and am trying to get better at sharing my preparations. I love your three main categories of ways to try and improve visibility and communication and ultimately success!
Thanks for the shoutout! I love the message here, and was planning to head on over to substack even before getting to that point! I had a bit of an eep! moment. "OMG the lady on TV just said my name!!" 😂
Katie this is SO GOOD and so helpful and encouraging, thank you so much for the reminder! Also your camera is incredible! So clear!! My brain is all over the place at the moment so I need to work through the business course again and sort it out, but this is a great start. Really appreciate you sharing!!
@@katiedraws OMG! what phone do you have?! I have an OLD IPhone and keep saying how badly i need a new one because I use video so much for work and content!!
@@katiedraws gosh if yours is a couple of years old and its THAT GOOD I need to sort it out! I think mine is an 11!! you're right a business expense (but still has to be paid for ha ha that bit comes down to me). I thought maybe in the new year but maybe sooner!!!
Thank you, Katie. I am a picture book illustrator with a graphic design and business background. I've worked in children's animation as a compositor but have yet to do a book for a publishing house. After many rejections, I thought that maybe the market is oversaturated. I think for me the issue is the latter part of sharing work consistently and showing what value I provide. Or maybe I'm just delusional about my work lol 🥲. It is confusing when after portfolio reviews by art directors from big publishers I always get the feedback that they love my work but then I never got hired. That's why I'm wondering if it is maybe also the follow up and maybe having internally giving up. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I have 2 littles at home and that is currently my full-time job but I have definitely been thinking of getting back into illustrating.
Thanks for this Katie! I've had a few painting commissions since starting, but no illustration gigs yet. I keep pitching to agents, but think it's time to start pitching to individuals/companies. I am finding Instagram very hard to get any traction, but there are many platforms out there to use so will use others. Any tips on Instagram right now? My interaction is very low x
My personal experience is, there is a lot of work, yes, getting paid for it is what's tricky 😂
@@forindet ohhh there’s a whole ‘nuther video to unpack THAT bit - yes!
