  • When their 12-year-old dog Marley was diagnosed with cancer, the Tschirhart family couldn't bear to say goodbye. So, they turned to ViaGen Pets, of Austin, Texas, a company that has cloned hundreds of pets for a multitude of grateful owners. Correspondent Tracy Smith checks out what the right amount of love, science and money can bring to an animal lover.

It's not about getting your pet back. It's about having a pet with similar temperament and intelligence. Some animals are so unique that cloning is worth it to regain the genetic line. Especially if they were neutered at a young age with no chance of having puppies.

Even if you clon it, it won’t be the same dog, this is highly unethical though, since dogs have primary consciousness, we don’t know what would the genetical impact be if it reproduces along generations, it could be a death sentence to the whole offspring of this dog.

I recently had to lay my little baby doll to rest because of cancer. I raised her from the time. She was five weeks old the little runt of the litter who was the sweetest most loving dog. I did have her to get a preserved, and one day after an appropriate time has passed, I will clone her.

All my fur babies were rescues. That is just pure stupidity. Doing this cheapens the memory of your last dog. This family could have given another homeless, abused or unloved dog a chance at a better life. Plus that $50k could have been used to help a poor families, save lives or help with childrens cancer treatments. This is why some people don't deserve large amounts of money because they waste it money on nonsense.

I’m going to place some ashes around the place he loved so much to go the ocean ,and place some in a tree of life Ash chain and plant a tree with some of his ashes so he may grow give life in some way to the tree .
Max is and always will be on my mind what a loyal dog he was and is he will always be around in my heart the hole is deep with out him around but I will watch all the videos we’ve made together to lessen the pain .
I’m happy for him that he has his friends waiting to reunite I pray and I hope we will be able to see each other again with all our friends .
He’s taught me a lot about my feelings towards others making me check my heart on how I feel towards other people when he passed I realized how cold my heart was to those around me so I will work on theses things he made me see .
Have a good journey my boy and bark for me when I pass so I can find the way to you and those who we knew I also hope you find that big green patch of grass that you so loved to run around on .

Poor original Marley, he has been replaced by another dog that looks exactly like him. That isn't really respectful to the original dog honestly. It's basically saying all Marley was, was his physical appearance because cloning the appearance doesn't clone the personality and that dog still hasn't had those experiences/memories with you. You cannot replace a dog and it isn't respectful to the original dog to try to replace it. The best thing to do is remember the dog and the memories you had with the dog and get a new different dog in time, not forgetting or replacing your original dog but making new memories/experiences with a new puppy

A few things they never mentioned, was there could easily be failed results. Like embryos that never developed past the embryo stage to puppies being born and not looking just right. So, that means there could easily be multiple tries to get the clone just right. I think the famous Dolly the sheep, had as many as 100s of tries to get a successful birth and that’s common, to have a lot of retries. Also that clones have the same genetic defects as the original, so if that cancer that took the original Marley’s life was genetic, then that same cancer will claim the clone, as well. Lastly clones’ DNA is based off the original’s DNA at the time the sample was taken and DNA ages with us, so the cloned dogs will have shorter life-spans, then the original, unless the DNA was taken when the original was still a puppy. Also it’s just a clone of the original’s body, while the personality can never be cloned.
End the end it’s not worth the hassle to even clone your pet, since there might be some place that will clone cats. I wished those people just adopted a new dog or cat, when their beloved pet passes away, since there are too many dogs and cats being born and thrown into animal shelters, all ready. And buying a shelter dog is way cheaper then getting a clone.

Just crazy it's almost something genetics should not play games with. The only way I can describe it is the newborn puppy that was cloned already knew its family from the previous DNA

Looks like he’s got a couple clones of his wife too. Best wife ever. She warned me about a snake. Seriously these maize and blue jackasses who so badly want people to know they’re Michigan alums are pitiful in so many ways. At least they have their wealth to protect them from the realities of life.

Thinking about how many dogs they could have saved in a shelter and probably found a purebred puppy that would have similar character and demeanor just makes me sad. I think cloning devalues the animal you copy and the genes don't always come out "pure" so the faulty puppies get disposed of not to mention that the success rate is around 30% so there has to be a lot of animal suffering involved to get the "perfect clone". There is also a high chance of deformity in the cloned puppies. You will just never see them cause they get rid of them beforehand. Don't believe me? Do your own research. Korean companies have published some of their data.

I don’t know where people’s hearts are when they decide this is what they need to do after their beloved pet has passed.
I would be traumatized if I saw my kitty again. My chest still hurts from his passing. But bringing him back like that would just be straight wrong. Something about the whole concept feels seriously off

Sun Morning should do a segment on why pet cloning is considered inhumane by many people. Here's an excerpt to read this entire article:
    www.dailypaws.com/living-with-pets/pet-owner-relationship/pet-cloning
"In order to clone a cat or dog it takes numerous attempts. Downing says that the cloning process doesn’t work about 75% of the time. Implanted embryos don’t take to the surrogate, miscarriages happen, and pets are born with birth defects.
"That means a whole host of cats or dogs have to be on hand to donate eggs and act as surrogates. These lab animals undergo procedures that mostly fail to produce a clone.
"And it's not a pain-free process for the animals, either. Downing says that animals are "definitely harmed" during cloning. The egg donor is subjected to hormonal treatments and surgical egg harvesting. Surrogates receive multiple rounds of hormones to prepare for pregnancy and surgical implantation of embryos. Then, offspring who have birth defects suffer doubly, both in being created, and then when euthanized as a result of their deformities."

Enjoy the limited time we have with our loved ones, pets, let's hope it's longer then short, if we have a do-over with something/someone we as human nature don't appreciate somethings unlimited, plus the soul of the animal is different, it's the soul that we fall in love with, that can never be replaced.

I need to add another perspective. We are thinking of cloning our dog. It’s a lot of money, yes, but we can afford it because of many years of hard work, sweat and tears. We’re also proud to have adopted and saved many pets too. Also, proud to have given many thousands of dollars to pet charities, and Humane Society’s in several states and will continue to help animals that can’t help themselves. 🐾❣️🐾

Somehow this makes the original pet seem less special. Their memory replaced by a new dog that is exactly like them, but isn't. The best things in life come to an end, that's why we should appreciate them when we have them.

so by cloning marley, you think you will get the same dog? Just adopt another dog smh (or purchase from a breeder if you must). they can and will be just as loyal and protective as marley despite not looking like him. also don't you think it's unfair that you're just lying to yourself and pretending ziggy is actually marley, rather than recognising ziggy as his own individual???

This is what happens when people try to play god/creator once they have the tech. Cloning as a whole, still creeps me out. Aint no way this should be acceptable. Im sorry but cloning a pet that passed, for that much? It should be outlawed.
That shows people really dont care as much as they say they do, cuz if u really loved your pet, you would let them rest in peace and not create a duplicate version of them with no attachments to u, saying they reborn just because u cant let go. Bro they not reborn, u messed with the natural order of life and you skipping the grieving process. Just get a new pet, like wtf man
And another thing, what if it failed. Then what? Are they gonna talk about that? I really doubt it.

  • @SatyaKaliYam

Attachment to things creates suffering. Our egos and desires are the things that destroy our true nature and what life has to offer. And if you have $50k to spare, wish that money would go help those in need rather our selfish needs aka cloning our pets.
