- Recorded in Bristow, VA May 24, 1998. RIP Hughie Thomasson and Leon Wilkeson. Hughie plays slide on this rarely played gem from Skynyrd's Muscle Shoals sessions (available on the excellent CD "Skynyrd's First: The Complete Muscle Shoals Sessions")
Lynyrd Skynyrd 1998:
Johnny Van Zant - Vocals
Gary Rossington - Guitar
Hughie Thomasson - Guitar
Rickey Medlocke - Guitar
Leon Wilkeson - Bass
Billy Powell - Piano
Jeff McCallister - Drums
Dale Krantz Rossington & Carol Chase - Background Vocals
This is a hauntingly beautiful song, written and played masterfully. Gary is Legendary in his playing toward the end. RIP Gary, God Bless You! Best song ever to have never make it to the mainstream. 50 years after the og it is one of my favorite songs of all time. Timeless!!!
Nailed it my friend! I listened to it at least 25 times in the past 7 days. Underrrated and not understood by many
Dam, Billy Powell on the keys sounds like a childhood memory of my favorite carnival! Joyous!
I had just gotten my drivers license when I heard this on first and last album which had come out I’ve been looking for years for a live version and found this after all these years Ive always loved it A lot of songs on that album are great Just saying Great song Under rated at that If you guys get a chance listen to the album First and last Wino Lend a helping and Coming home Great songs And Rick Medolock playing drums back then Only southerners can write such songs Yes sir
Gary playing the intro riff at the end always gives me cold chills
I appreciate how they tried to stay true to the spirit of that song, even JVZ
I love Johnny's Tee-shirt...."Fly on proud Bird. You're free at last".
Thanks for posting this......One of the more emotional songs that was written....saw them play this in 88 with Ed KIng....unbelievable !!!!
@@BEASTofBurden2024 '88 a good spot. If you're from Ga. we may be kin. @Tony Beazley - I saw both legs of the 87-88 tribute tour. Thankfully they kept the Skynyrd music going for people that like live rock music.
One of the best Lynyrd's song!!!! With an amazing guitar solo!!!
Thanks for posting this. I was there that night. Peter Frampton opened and the Boys came on took the stage and no one sat down until they stopped playing!! What a hell of a night!
Ahh, I was at this show!! My first Skynyrd concert, as a matter of fact. This was a kick-ass show too. I just learned several days ago that Billy died in January, and just a few minutes ago that Hughie died last month. The Southern Rock world, and I will never be the same without that amazing guitarist and piano playing Skynyrd ORIGIONAL band member. Rest in peace brothers, we will greatly miss you....
My daddy saved me once again I love him so much!!
i miss leon wilkson
The Best Southern Rock band ever...
Yeah, heard or read, thats not Allen's guitars Rickey playing ?
I guess I can DIE now. Just watching Rickey and Gary on guitar on this all time favorite Skynyrd song of mine did it for me.Thanks for this upload. Why has this GREAT song been so NEGLECTED for the last thirty more of less years????
I second that. I had no idea Rickey could play as well as he can sing. This is just so GOOD!
Agrred!
Whats gets me is....they were kids man writing this epically haunting tune....I wonder if Ronnie had thoughts of this song having duel meanings...coming home to the house from the road or coming home to Heaven when life here ends?
@@michaelandmelanieasby4378 Rickey played on the original version too.
God damn...
When they show Gary's fingers during the solo before the end...
Despite his old age, he's ridiculously accurate in his playing... it's so smooth I was left with my jaw open...
So accurate, smooth, and full of emotion.
He is the best.
When was that ? I am trying to catch up on him
@@rosemarygranat3981 that 11 year old comment reply though. Lol. It's about 4:45 - 5:15
For real!
I was introduced to this song by this really special guy. I love him with all of my HEART!;)
once the Skynyrd sound starts its impossible to turn away man, great band.love their music
love em all.but this is my fav.play this when i been gone and headed home my baby.thank you lynyrd skynyrd
I listened to this song over and over waiting for my daddy to bring me HOME:)
Hughie on slide. A master at work...
Nowhere close to the original slide by Ed King.
@@larryn2682
Nope.
Was originally recorded before Ed ever played with them.
Unbelievable! Randall Hall did the solo on the Tribute Tour and it was way different. Rickey hit this dead on just like Allen's original solo.
Notice Ricky also plays the same kind of guitars as Allen too. It was a shame Ricky couldn’t have joined in 1987 when Skynard reformed. But at that time he was fronting Blackfoot.
@@PhantomDetectivesLLC Rickey
Billy, Leon and Hughie !
Absolutely one of my favorite Skynyrd songs ever! Fuck YEAH! Needs more cowbell! I mean LEAD GUITAR during the solos.
I wonder if anyone can listen to this and not think about Ronnie he is home waiting for the rest Gary artimus we all must feel this
The guitar has perfect tone. I love it.
RIP Billy Powell ! Best piano tickler of the ivoires in the south !
He's still. ALIVE!;!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bring the chord back right to pinky top right of piano
Great song. They should do this one live more often.
I like the way this opens with Billy Powell!!
See ya in heaven BP.
this song helped me when i was in the army
Thank you 💕☺️ I do too!!!!!!!!!!! Here we go and move on. That's our music too !!!!!!!!
THIS JAM BRINGS ME HOME IN MY MIND EVERY TIME
He's good but not as good as Ronnie. Rip Ronnie. Glad we got his brother to carry it on tho. Long live Skynyrd!
he's not tryin to replace Ronnie
Johnny sucks !
i totally in love with the album ``Southern by the Grace of God`` God¡¡¡¡ hear this song in my home theater with all volumen is just....... AMAZING
My friend listen to the original version from First And Last.
It's such a great song and sounds so good here. Thanks for posting this.
I did some research and you're correct re: Ricky Medlocke playing drums on the original studio recording of Comin' Home, which is on the album "Skynyrd's First: The Complete Muscle Shoals Album". Honestly, I had no idea Ricky was associated with the band in the beginning, let alone a (part-time) drummer for them.
*Rickey
It first came out on the "First And Last" album in 1978.
@@larryn2682Ricky was a fantastic replacement for Allen when he rejoined in 1996.
Us forever and true.
Excellent song.
Little know fact, Rickey Medlocke played drums on this track when it was recorded back in '71. After Bob Burns took some time off in '71 and '72, Rickey filled in on drums.
awesum band...i dont understand y they have remained so un derrated.....excelent song too....
And what the story of him joining in the begining?
Thank you Sir for posting this.
I was there! Wayyyy in the back having the time of my life!
Four pre 1977 crash members of Skynyrd on stage that night was almost like the old day
The best version of Johnny singing like Ronnie
Props for showing the solos up close so us students can learn the ways of the masters.
Need more haters. How dare loved ones carry on the music, love, and legacy.
RIP Billy Great song
so good...
it's nice to see Ricky take so much pride in playing Allan's solo's, and he does them so perfect. I sure hope God doesn't call any more of them home any time soon. The only original left is Gary. with a stroke and a heart attack in his past. I sure hope he lives on for a long time. and may the others R.I.P. thanks for the upload. I never get tired of the classics....
thebluesrockers Rickey Medlocke was a founding member. Look it up.
@@myloridarlin he was a founding member of Blackfoot yes but skynyrd no, though he did do some work with them for their muscle shoals album
This was the lineup they had the first time I saw them(a few months after this recording), and probably the best lineup since the crash...
Not without Ed King and Artimus
Friday night in Boca Raton Florida. Ten rows from center stage. They brought the A Game!!
Skynyrd kicked it big time!!
I love this song ..
Told my siblings that I want this song played at my funeral
Someone in 2020??
He's the original drummer on this tune...check it out!
perfect armony!
BEAUTIFUL SONG
Woowee what a tune
RIP Billy Powell....
Ifovor the piano i am typing to the beat !!! love U Live on till we meet
Ronnie nailed it. Johnny does a good job, but never ever got really close to Ronnie.
Is that a bad thing
Great band big band i love them even though they re dead
Muito bom!!
Way to go Rick Medlocke....
Gary FuckinRossington ROCK"S!!!
una de mis favoritas
Sure miss Allen Collins pickin in this tune!!!!!!!!!!
Be thankful we had the original drummer from the studio recording of this song replace him on guitar in Ricky Medlocke. And Ricky plays the same kind of guitars Allen did 🙂.
Gary was a bad ass
i like JVZ and RVZ the same. my dad saw original skynyrd and i have seen new skynyrd and its just another generation of skynyrd fans
Gotta be one of my favorite Skynyrd songs ever. Could have sworn that was Ed King on this one, but not according the vid poster's "line-up" remarks, though. I can't still seem to find a live vid on Comin' Home with Ronnie and the original line-up, though :(
Do you see the look on Leon’s face as he’s looking over at Gary while he’s tearing it up on his outro solo?
He basically played that solo almost note for note, as it is on the album.
Great stuff!
Billy Powell nobody played the ivorýs like Billy he played it pretty
The guy who played the drums on the original recording of this tune is Ricky Medlock, the same guy who plays the first full solo on this performance, on the Explorer. He was the original drummer for the band. Bit o' trivia.
Yeah, good ways to bring the past of good southen music from the South
My old drum teacher !! Jeff McCalister from Louisville, Ky. Think he still teaches.
poxa, quem negativa um som desse ?
banda inteiramente perfeita.
Billy played it pretty!
i couldnt agree more
Ronnie would NOT have been caught DEAD in SKINNY JEANS. Johnny is just an embarrassment at times. Love the gong just not what I have had to see and hear. Rest in Peace Ronnie knowing you never TRIED to look SEXY. You were a MAN and we all respected you being one.
You ain't scene enough pictures
I like the picture where ronnie has two black eyes and sticking our his tongue with 16 yr female star of THE EXORCIST
Bristow is the home of Nissan Pavilion, which has become DC's summer concert venue much as Merriwether Post used to be.
It is amazingly proximate to several Civil War battles, including both Battles of Manassas and skirmishes that have now been lost geographically due to the sprawl of DC. Very appropriate.....
BTW, what I luv more is watching Billy Powell - we lost him now and w/out his piano there would be major pieces missing in the completeness of the music.
listen to ed king's 1975 overdubbed outro solo to this......unbelievable
wow
hughie could play circles around medlocke and rossington both. given the opportunity. would of loved to hear his take on medlockes lead here.
While I love Hughie, Rosington in no slouch on guitar. I don't believe you are giving him his due.
That's F'd up. Gary is, was Skynyrd and always will BE
SKYNYRD WERE THE BADDEST MOFOS TO EVER TAKE THE STAGE PERIOD.....
Kenny powers on the piano 🤘
I was there!!
Nice.
Hughie's solo is pretty decent but I think Rickey's solo is weak to poor. And Ed King did play the solo on this song. Also, there is no existing live recording of Comin' Home with Ronnie. If it was ever played live it would have been back before Skynyrd's first lp, before Al Kooper "discovered" them. This is probably my favorite Skynyrd song. It's haunting and sad. Just an incredible song.
Allen actually played the main solo and Gary does the outro solo. King did all the little slide licks overdubbed in 1975.
@@RockFan98 I don't know where some people get their information.
Nissan Pavillion is in Bristow. It's Northern Virginia near Manassas.
Ohh yeah. Rickey Medlocke was with Lynyrd Skynyrd before Bob Burns was. Just like Kid Rock said that Lynyrd Skynyrd had more members that the YMCA.
riding the iron horse I listen everyday while riding the bike
646 NYC
ED KING added alot to that lead part...and don't forget it....
Billy Powell on the 88 tooth monster
Gary and his Les Paul.....
🫡🤫
He is correct Bristow is an unincorporated town in Prince William County, Virginia. Bristol is southern Virginia
FUCKING SWEET!!
I would love to see the over produced crap playing these days even come remotely close to sounding this awesome live! I am 33 and wish I was born about 20 years sooner. The music back in the day rocked! I can only hope it will swing back to stuff like this in my lifetime. But no, our generation will be known for Beiber! sigh
Strange...didn't Ricky Medlocke actually play drums on the original recording of this? Now he's playing the leads? Very cool.
awesome tune not as good as original but admirabal so many skynyrd boys gone but not forgotten their somewhere laughing at us all nicepostup thanks ripboys peace on and up
