  • In this video we get the maiden flights on the 8s goblin 380 build! It flew! Had some issues but for the first two flight I’m happy. Second flight was definitely faster but the GPS fell off so next time out we will add more pitch and push it harder!

    Good deal finding the GPS. If the motor is hot at 14 degrees can you go more? Also is there a chance that the blades will break with high pitch. I wonder if that happens can the high load over come the centrifugal force that keeps them straight? I have always heard 14 degrees is about the max most people go. Airplane wings can be overloaded and break but they don't spin like helicopter blades obviously it's different but has that ever been the cause of main blades snapping off?

    • @westhobbiesrc8051
      @westhobbiesrc8051  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Took three of us about 30 minutes to find the GPS. If the app wasn’t on, we would’ve never found it. Lol. Yes there is still potential to make more power. Even though the motor is warm/hot. As long as you stay under 220° you won’t have any issues. Some people will tell you 180° but I push my stuff to the limit to see what it can take or what it takes to burn up. Heat is what kills them. I have a total of 16° of collective pitch range on the helicopter. 13° is just what I started at. If you are going for an equal positive and negative throw yes 14° is about Max that you can get. But! On speed heli’s you don’t need much negative so 7 degrees is more than enough negative and you set the Heli up to have a lot more positive. Yes, a blade could definitely break from the RPM and force. The new blades are a lot better. The carbon fiber is a lot stronger and they can take some serious abuse. Blades take Way more abuse from 3-D flying then speed flying. The only difference is with speed flying. You run a lot more RPM.

    How hot the motor gets is actually FAR more dependent on the ESC rather than the motor itself. What happens is that the ESC actually supplies a sort of oscillating signal to the motor. This is because the ESC is actually electrically similar to an amplifier to a speaker where what it is trying to do is produce an alternating magnetic field to repel the magnets lining the rotary part of the motor. This is how the motor moves in the first place. But what can happen is if your ESC simply is not powerful enough to supply a clean signal, you can encounter what is known as signal clipping where the waveform being generated by the ESC actually clips off near its peak amplitude and this causes the motor to actually hang for a second in a given position and this causes heating through induction where current starts flowing THROUGH the air gap between the magnets and the coils through dielectric breakdown.

    • @westhobbiesrc8051
      @westhobbiesrc8051  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, and no. Yes, a motor is controlled with three phases. Hence why it is brushless with three wires. The ESC pulsates power though three phases, which is what spins the motor in either direction and controls the rpm of the motor with a set voltage from inputting the ESC. How much power or RPM the motor makes is not controlled by which ESC you are using but on the windings and copper used in the actual motor itself. The heat is not controlled by the ESC but by the motor. For example, if a motor makes 2000 W of power, it will make that power regardless of what ESC you have on it. There’s a huge misunderstanding, that a motors only gonna make so much that’s an Esc can deliver. , it will make that power regardless of what ESC you have on it. There is a huge misunderstanding that a motor is only going to make so much that the ESC can deliver and that’s just not the case. He in the motor comes from frictional force, as well as power being made more RPM the more frictional force the more heat is made in the actual motor itself. You could put a 300 amp Esc on that motor and it’s gonna make the same power and the same heat a 50 amp Esc would make.

    • @ambrosekillpack4841
      @ambrosekillpack4841 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@westhobbiesrc8051I was actually referring specifically to having an underpowered ESC on running the motor. Yes the motor is going to take the same amount of power from any ESC regardless of how powerful the ESC is SO LONG as the ESC is powerful enough. But if you have an underpowered ESC running the motor that is where you run into issues with signal clipping. This is why I say how hot the motor gets is more dependent on the ESC than the motor itself, because you need to have an ESC that will comfortably feed it enough power so that it won't hit a signal clipping problem and overheat. I did not clarify this well enough. An example would actually be if you tried to run a motor that is rated for 80 amps on an ESC that is only rated for 40 amps. You will run into overheating issues because the motor is gonna try to draw every watt it wants while the ESC is going to struggle to keep up. But if you did it the other way around where you ran a 40 amp motor on an 80 amp ESC, you wouldn't have an issue.

    • @westhobbiesrc8051
      @westhobbiesrc8051  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is insane! So nothing changed between the two flights. The only thing that changed is on the second flight it was faster. Climb out alone was almost 90 mph where the maiden flight maxed out was 97 mph. So as it came out of the dive it was well over 100 mph, and the gain was just too high. Lowered to Almost nothing and it’s perfect now!

    • @westhobbiesrc8051
      @westhobbiesrc8051  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It could! You never know unless you try. That violent vibration was just from the game being too high there is zero vibration in the helicopter. But if there’s a point that is what maintenance is for every 40 to 50 flights all the shafts get replaced, belts get replaced so I doubt anything will break.
