This game, at the time it came out for Atari 2600, was way, way, WAY ahead of its time. Checkpoint saves long before they were commonplace, full-length background music long before it was common on home consoles, complex map with navigation puzzles and secret areas at a time when most game maps were mundane.

All in all, a legendary game. It had such a brilliant atmosphere. But no wonder I only ever got as far as I did, how the hell are you supposed to know that you're meant to stand on a certain spot and wait there for a balloon to arrive?! I'm glad I never completed it, the ending is so pants that I don't think I'd have even realised I'd completed it. I know for a fact that I'd have just assumed the game had crashed. That's not a just reward for the effort.

It probably wasn't the first to have it - I have no idea - but this was the first game I encountered where music shifted based on in-game events, from "laid back" (general tune) to "happy/frantic" (you got a treasure) to minor key (you died). It really added to the experience for me.

The Atari 2600 version was noted for having an extra 2k of memory in addition to the standard 8k ROM. David Crane created the former as the 'Display Processor Chip' and hoped to use it in other games, but the Great Video Game Crash of 1984 kept that from ever happening.

Loved this game. The Atari 2600 version was some kind of oddity in home gaming, how well it turned out vs something like this. The best version, however was the Atari 8-bit/5200 version which in addition to all this cool stuff had an entire second world and ending sequence. It was so tough for me to beat, but it blew my mind when I did :D

I knew a person that had a device that either overclocked the system or was extra memory that cut the load time in half!!! It was called JetLoad, it plugged in to the left- back of the C64. On the 2600 version of the game I used to just turn the console off and on again REALLY quick and it would glitch and start you off the level below the starting point. You'd just walk left and win. I've tried this with my "new" 2600's and I can't get it to work anymore... I don't remember the exact version I had BITD.

Funny you would mention this. I encountered a similar glitch in the original Pitfall on the 2600. Same as your's, quick off and on repeatedly until the glitch happened. But with the original Pitfall Harry would be floating in the upper left hand corner of the screen. And as long as you didn't press the button, you could just float from screen to screen using the stick. It screwed around with the levels a bit too. It was pretty consistently too. If you were able to lock in the glitch, it pretty much handled the same every time.
The reason I said it was funny is that nobody ever remembers this glitch except for me. I even mentioned it in person to David Crane, the games author, and he said he never heard of it. Your glitch is the sequel game, but it has the same basic feel, and it's the first time I ever remember anyone saying they used the ON/OFF power glitch.

The 2600 is one of the best versions, right next to the amazing Atari 8-bit/5200 version.

So was the Atari 800 version. I'm not necessarily saying this is "bad" but it just lacks a lot of the ooooomph that the Atari version had, especially musically, which was extremely disappointing because of how good the SID chip was. But then again, nobody really utilized the SID chip to the max until Rob Hubbard and then Martin Galway came along.

Martin Galway's music on the c64 is awesome. Who can forget the legendary Ocean Loader, or the excellent Comic Bakery theme, just to name a few? Jonathan Dunn was pretty good too.
