Fantastic review of not only the GR1’s, but why headphones are such an important part of the audiophile journey.

I’d never used headphones until college when I took a fine arts course and had to go to the library and listen to classical recordings using headphones. Those symphonies and string quartets sounded like I’d never heard them before. Alsoly, about the the same time, my best friend had me listen to Pink Floyd’s DSOTM on his no-name $30 headphones. I’ve been a headphone devotee ever since. I really enjoy your commentary.

Fell down this rabbit hole myself and spent ridiculous amounts of money to find "my sound". Although my finances dictated that I stay between 200-500 dollars, I did dip my toe into the kilobuck market. I won't list all my indiscretions here. There were a lot of them. When the smoke cleared, I chose the set that I thought would be just a meh experience.
To this day, I haven't owned anything but the GR1s. Were some of the more expensive headphones better? Somewhat, but not 200=600 dollars better. The clarity, bass vs treble and comfort make these GR1s the last headphones I'll ever won. I'm 70, so there's that.

Hi Randy, great review. Co-incidentally, I just purchased my first proper headphone rig which comprises the ifi Zen DAC/Amp Signature bundle plus Sundaras. It’s fantastic full stop, never mind for the money! I would be amazed if you thought there wasn’t enough bass, but if you really wanted to, you could press the 6XX button which is designed to shape the sound for the Sennheisers of the same name, by lifting the bass slightly. To my ears, totally unnecessary with the Sundaras.

Three topics worth mentioning here, in our beloved, usual Randy-style:
    - speakers vs headphones: they both have a use case, stop fighting on what’s best!
    - open vs closed backs: we all know what’s best here, but chances are you have to consider your dear ones’ needs too!
    - testing music: oh, come on! If you don’t maximize sound quality with the music you usually listen to vs pure audiophile test tracks, the whole hi-fi journey makes no sense!
    Thank you Randy.
Oh, and BTW: did I get it right Meze 99 are the ones you prefer among other closed-back?

    • @cheapaudioman
      @cheapaudioman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

I personally don't and haven't pushed anything hard enough to need one. I think pure class A designs could benefit from a fan or a class D with a monster of a power supply. Most of the class A/B I've used have never gotten hot enough to need any additional cooling. Now if you have a receiver or something in a cabinet that doesn't have good ventilation then that could be a very good scenario to use one in

No. You were right when you initially said the resolution doesn't matter. Then you changed your opinion to - as long as it is cdlossless res. Equalizing matters much more. As oluvgadgets says. Is there an equalizer one can use for Tidal Free or Amazon Prime Free music on ios phone? TH-cam doesn't operate in the background well on a phone. It's a hassle. And Spotify free doesn't skip songs. The problem with Tidal and Amazon on ios and iphone is the challenge of how to equalize them. Even on Tidal and Qobuzz, hi res music on my midrange headphones sounds rubbish. On spotify free with equalizing they sound fantastic. But the lack of skipping ruins the experience. TH-cam is just a bad experience overall.

Randy, you really like the Sundaras better than the HD800S? The Sundaras have more bass, but they definitely do not do that almost magical holographic soundstaging that the HD800s do. They are also far less comfortable and less well constructed.

    Hey Randy, love your channel!
I'm looking to get into a nicer headphone than the JBL earbuds I've used.
I don't call myself an audiophile by any means.. yet. Maybe one day. I'm looking for a headphone that right now I can run off my phone via a dongle dac while laying in bed and maybe one day can improve with a small dac/amp. I'm sure I'll end up with multiple pairs as time goes on but where is a good place to start? These GR1? The 560s, akg 361? It's so confusing. Thanks again

  • @willhenry7465

The best headphones I’ve ever experienced that are under $500, are the V-Moda Crossfade M-100s. The V-Moda master model is not for me, slightly more bass/muddy, at the cost of pristine mids/highs. First comparison that comes to mind. The first-generation Beats headphones. For me, those to this day have the best bass of any headphones I’ve heard. 1st generation only, much cheaper made afterwards. Point being, these V-Moda’s are a close second when it comes to bass, very punchy, quick tight and responsive. More importantly, they crush the beats when it comes to the mids/highs, which is most important to me. 50mm drivers with superb accuracy, detail/clarity. All headphones I listen to, I always have an amp/EQ pushing them. Flatline music is not for me. If anyone knows, I’m curious how Emotiva compares to the V-Moda’s. I’m always up for trying something new, betting the Vs for under 500 cannot be beat however. Side note, types of music used to push these for the most part. Dream Theater, Metallica, Tool, Korn, System of the Down, Pink Floyd, Zepplin and so on. Progressive Rock/Metal mainly. Point being I'm extremely picky when it comes to mids/the high ends. Thanks

So I decided I would spaff a ton on them, yes them. Not one £99 pair. I decided on Tin T2 & Samson SR850. Better pads on the Samson, had to wait for them to come from China. Still T2s, £40. SR850 + pads £37. Meizu USB Cable DAC £13. £90 all in. Cheap audio, man 😏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🎱😸

There are so many great headphone options in the $200-$300 price bracket. Amongst enthusiasts, under $500 is considered "Lo-Fi", with "Mid-Fi" starting at about $500. Hi-Fi starts about $1,000. Top of the line is $3,000+. You can go just as broke in headphone gear as two channel, lol.
It sounds crazy until you actually hear a great headphone system. I've gotten to listen to some crazy setups at local meets. Reality is, most would be blown away with a $200 headphone, and basic DAC/Headphone amp. Sennheiser's HD560S at $200 is a great pick (Randy, it sounds very different to the HD600, 700, AND 800 series). Also doesn't need an amp like the higher up Senns (110dB/mW), but will benefit from one.
Hope you get to try a Planar magnetic soon, as there are good options out there that I would consider "cheap". I'm a huge fan, and prefer them over dynamic drivers for most situations.

I love the 6XX and the momentum 3, and the IE300’s. I don’t like the HD800s though. I like a lot of their products.

@@cheapaudioman Did you try the 800S with EQ? I feel like that helped bring the bass up to decent levels and fixed the peaks, its still bass light but I find it very enjoyable
