Been in trucking 12yrs and never heard of anyone being told to run 80 before. 80 is just a major truck route between east & west and is the longest Interstate in the country. The reason I-80 weather is so bad is due to the fact that from Utah to Cheyenne is all 6,000ft above sea level and very wide open & wind swept and that damn Elk Mountain makes its own weather for the area. Nowhere else in the country is so exposed as I-80 to the elements. Elevation plus open land = extreme weather. More than 400mi of I-80 in Wyoming is 6000ft and above. You don't get below 6,000ft till after Cheyenne going east or after into Utah going west.
I drive 80 daily in Wyoming for my job and I consistently see truckers not driving for the conditions. We had another 80+ vehicle pileup again today due to a semi starting a chain reaction. These guys need more/better training. You are spot on!
First time driving on 80 in the winter was in my own privet AWD car. That was also the last time driving on 80 in the winter. The wind, snow and mountain passes are death traps. My brother is an OTR OO and he refuses to go on 80 in WY in the winter. He has the skill he just doesn’t trust he other drivers out there.
i live on the I-80 corridor and i drive a 115,000 pound truck on 80 every day and every day i have a situation where i have an incident with otr drive were i have to keep from killing them or them killing me because of the lack of training or lack of caring and it is getting to the point that i dont even want to keep driving anymore and i will tell you there is no shame in doing 35 mph to keep you and others safe because i have 20 yrs experiance and well over 3 million miles accident free and i will admit to do 25 mph on 80 so drivers need to learn to slow down of pull off the road period
I agree with you on facing your fears. I got in a car roll over many years ago because of a bad snow storm. I still tense because of it, but I haven't given up. Instead I been facing my fears and learning different saftey measure for mother nature. Keep on trucking
The first person to drive on fresh powder is fine. The second person is fishtailing. I often keep my left tires in the softer stuff piled up in the shoulder. It provides better traction than the shiny stuff.
I'm always in awe of the I-80 wrecks the news shows. Or just the weather stranding people. Seems to pop up quick. Wyoming Law makers have been trying to push I-80 into becoming a toll road. I don't think that will solve the problem. Anyway, Stay safe out there.
Great video! I just had to do 76 to 70 to get to salt lake city because 80 was closed this morning. Im from Boston, this whole I80 I70 thing you guys got out here is no joke!! Give me my ny nj and Boston maddness back im scared😂😂
Look at the drivers their pushing out of the schools 6 wks and you gotta truck headed to Cali. I did for 25yrs I’m retired now my heart’s with you guys Great 👍 video I agree with you 100%
It’s a catch 22. “Run 80 because it’s safer.” In turn, 80 is less safe because of the sheer amount of trucks. I liken it to running 78 from around Frystown to Allentown, PA. It’s just packed with cars and trucks; mostly containers. If something happens, you’re effed. Stay safe you two.
Trucking Review Channel Great man. I’ve been really busy this year. I haven’t been OTR since I came back in to do flowers in March. Also, it’s been the year of concerts for me and my son, also took my middle daughter to see one of her boy bands. I might make a summary video when/if I get time. I’m not sure that anyone would give a shit, though. I’ve also been laying low because of all of the drama. It’s just depressing. So I decided to live my life as well as I could this year.
I’m an owner operator I have been driving trucks cross country for 7 yrs I personally wouldn’t drive in those conditions I would stay at a truck stop or get a hotel,an accident would put me out of work for weeks or months ,one day and one load is not worth the thousands you will lose from a accident from driving in those conditions plus it’s not very comfortable
I got sent out in a snowstorm last year and the boss ended up having to spend a fortune getting me towed. It is undermining me now trying to get a job driving in Newfoundland. Prick
I’m not sure what has changed in the past 25 years in Wyoming. I would travel i80 from Nebraska to Utah. At least twice a month for three years. This was around 1998-2000. And maybe twice I had problems with the snow. And I don’t remember dealing with any wind. At least not in Wyoming. Now in Utah on i80 West of Salt Lake City I was shut down because of high winds in Utah. But never in Wyoming did I have any trouble. Most of the time I was loaded really heavy. 45,000 to 46,000 lbs of frozen food going west and 40,000 lbs of produce coming east. So anyway. Just wondering what has changed in that area.
If you run the floor heat only and turn off your defrost at cold temperatures, you dont need wipers. This does not work in early fall or late spring, when the snow is wet. If you keep the windshield as cold as the outside temperature the snow will not melt to the windshield, this is what causes poor visibility. Take it from a guy who has been running the Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana back Mountain country for over 20 years. I usually run I-80 at full speed in the deep winter cold and never turn on my wipers and have a clear windshield all day. When I'm at my fuel drops I would open my windows to allow the floor heat to escape so it wouldn't heat up the windshield. Not trying to tell you how to drive, just a friendly suggestion. I love the truck and the videos. I see you guys on 90 every once in a while.
I lease with prime if we can’t do 35 we park because we don’t want to become an issue for those guys that run those roads all the time . Now doesn’t mean that you find doing less . At that point we looking for somewhere to park.
Funny topic I just got preplanned for Cheyenne ..I have avoided that section of I80 since my first month of driving...so time to trucker up and discover what lays ahead of me this time...

Yeah once one learns where the winds funnel down across, i know one particular spot go west where there is a right curve and bam the wind will hit hard on the right side and if icy from snow that has melted during the day and frozen back over at night it will leave a few hairs standing on ones head.
I ran that road in some of the worst weather in the late 80’s to mid 90’s. It’s not the road or the weather it’s these morons from the CDL school indoctrinated era that says people like me and those before me are the hazards because we know how fast 40mph actually is when you lose/ need more traction.
You are 100% correct but they are the majority now and they call us super trucker with a sneer on there face as they clog up the highway instead of parking when we know we can roll

The speed limits for big rigs in America are crazy! No wonder trucks are involved in so many high speed collisions. Here in the (sane) UK the speed limit for trucks is 56 MPH & trucks are fitted with electronic speed limiters to ensure that this is adhered to. 80 MPH for a semi is just madness!!
56 mph? This is not London! The Wild West is too big. Truckers get paid by the mile. The East Coast of US more similar to UK (population density) and speed limits are lower for most areas.
I see your point. I lived and drove in Europe for 7 years. but as the other guy said its to big here to mess around. carriers send there refrigerator freight this way for there are more services for Breck down. unfortunately most of the drivers in this corridor are the least experienced of all. and it's a recipe for disaster.
I dont think its all drivers. Companies take these trucks and modify the transmission so a driver can not put them in manual. In the owners manels it says not recommended because of mountain driving. So these trucks can not be put into manual so the company can save a little money on fuel. These full blown automatics are not safe
Depending on the destination but usually if heading towards California in the winter. Even if taking the long run was better off Usually most of the time in winter we prevented such and instead took another ways towards a more clear roads. Q
All snow is NOT "powder snow". "Powder snow" is snow falling like 20 degrees or less, especially less than 10 degrees. A lot truckers and people in society know that. Then again there's people in their minds group all snow as powder snow. Powder snow is like flour that you toss in the air that blows around everywhere. Was I or now a semi truck driver, no. Did I ever drive out west on a ski trip, yes, in this I-80 across Wyoming. Actually from Livonia(west of Detroit, MI) all the way to Salt Lake City, then to Alta Ski Resort(southeast of S.L.C.). I drove by myself to ski in Colorado from Oklahoma when I was in USAF. You truckers that drive I-80 west of Reno know the State Police required chains on tires for all vehicles going over that Donner Pass. That snow is wet a lot times they just get dumped of that "Sierra Cement". That's why Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort south of Lake Tahoe got 800 inches for a winter season. Check out videos by semi truck driver who goes by the name "Riding Shotgun". He drove over Red Mountain Pass/US Highway 550/Million Dollar Highway in the WINTER!!!! To me that takes a lot guts. Three/four miles south of Ouray(pronounced U-ray) for next about 8 miles NO guardrails, up to 70 degrees angle downward, and 400 FEET down likely to your death. TH-cam videos on this highway, 4x4 mountain driving roads, Silverton and Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad for everyone. Sorry I got carried away and off the "beaten trail"(I-80 Wyoming). Oh yes, Gary lives in Wyoming, Michigan. The name brought by settlers from Pennsylvania and New York state in 1840's/1850's of same name of perspective towns.
We are told to park if we have to chain up. IMHO it's no load is worth chaining up. We never run 70 west of Denver no matter the season. Maybe I'm scared, don't care what you say. I'd rather park it while I can still find a spot. Not going to be in that mob parking whereever when they close the road. Not going to be on TV cause I'm in a pile up. So you go super trucker.
WRONG Prime routes are based on fuel stops. Im on 90 now. Also, what company forces you to drive if u dont want to cause u def r not talking about Prime. I’m on the company side. In all actuality its the owner ops who are forced to run once you commit to a load and that’s probably why so many O ops hurry up to wait. u cant afford the risk of messing up the commitment where all mega carries have to do is switch out loads to a different driver should any issues arise. Just had the convo w my dispatch. I could had rerouted myself 84. Ill take 80 over 90 any day. I ran 80 all last winter and my rookie arse (from a mega company that yall love to hate) watched two super trucker know it alls flip trucks right in front of her cause they were being super truckers going 60 mph while my rookie mega carrier driver self maintained a speed of 40 mph. Ever had a truck flip right in front of u, snaking on both lanes? Life or death situation. My life at risk cause of a idiot super trucker. I started to slide but managed to safely pull over onto the side of the road and exited out my truck as i knew more idiots would be driving down the hill to fast for weather conditions and crash into the stopped traffic on the roadway. So y’all made cause we r “flooding” 80? Tell the REAL reason why you guys are so upset. As if you guys didn’t have to start somewhere. Lol. How bout you guys run 90? No one runs up here and I’m bout sick of some of you truckers risking everybody’s life around you when u make poor decisions. Hope i dont see you super truckers down the road cause I’m governed at 57 & 61 and that means you failed as a trucker. Rookies, dont let these haters make u feel you are less than. They put pants on the same way u do. Hell some of them even have panties n stockings on prettier than mine under those wranglers...that makes u more of a man than they r. Be smart about your decisions. Today on 90 in MT I saw two flipped trucks, 1 jack knifed truck, and a man ejected laying either dead or unconscious in the middle of the east and westbound lanes. while his suv was all the way on the side of two westbound lanes. I shut down twice. Never been on this route and two much ice for me to play with. I could careless about what a super trucker has to say about me shutting down. Im here to make money not play Russian roulette. Knowledge makes you wise while experience makes you comfortable. DONT YOU EVER GET TOO COMFORTABLE! Thats when mistakes happen. Shout out to all the real truckers who help out the rookies. You are truly appreciated. Thank you for not treating us as if we are a threat or competition to you but treating us as allies/coworkers. I wish you all safe travels this winter and every season after.
Im talking about reffer. There are exceptions to every rule.. but i am 100 % correct fuel is a factor under service not available. Yesterday seem 1 ENGLAND and watched a warrner flip. Only 2 megas there not talking about leases drivers. Very few o/o at prime though
Sorry about you being up set. We I didn't start the way you did in my day we i just buy a truck and start trucking. If you are running 40 you are not a problem dont get ur panties in a bunch. But you as a company is a problem becomes you as a company are running to slow to get traction and spernd all your time as a company spun out on the hills. It you cant run 40 park it... super trucker is a real thing. Not the way you say it with a snear on your lips. Super trucker is what you should hope you can become as a company driver. Super truckerd have done it all and did it correctly. They keep there young mouth shut and learn to become instead of being a rookie and running off at the mouth. Dont feel bad for being at a mega. Times have changed. But dont ever think that you are on equal footing with old dogs. And maby you should know about a person's channel before you ever make the 1st comment then you cant foul yourself up thinking you are speaking to someone that hasn't done it all and knows it all mostly. And comfort is a different issue fear is fear i am afraid and i run but not on solid ice. I didn't make fun of you for shutting down. I have had many many drivers. I wont you rookies to shut down. But when your broke dont whine how bad trucking is to you is so hard you cant make money. I chain up go over a mountain reload come back out chains humming and the truck stop is still full of broke drivers... worked for me for 28 years. You dont chain and go. I dont hire you
Trucking Review Channel i dont wear underwear so nothing to pull out my arse. Also, I wasn’t just talking to you but also responding to comments. I will never seek to be a super trucker cause your definition of a super trucker is different from mine. Yes i saw the same cr england n werner as you did and also a o op. Not sure why you r assuming i think I’m on equal footing as truckers who have been doing this for decades when i clearly thanked them in my previous comment for their help and support. BUT for the record I may be a rookie but Im not young. I learn sheet everyday from others including chaining at doners past last season. All i know is I’m a excellent driver and I run circles around some folk out here. Even though Im governed so slow 2800-3000 is normal week for me. I have next to no bills at home so broke out here I will never be. Im to strategic to come into this type of industry without a plan. Also allows me to build savings for wherever this trucking journey takes me.
And the last sentence about mega carriers thinking i70 thru CO is too dangerous may be true but they still want u to go that way if it's the shortest route.
No it don’t. I can count on one hand how many times I’ve driven in the snow since 2002. RESCHEDULE is word my DISP hears from me nowadays. This job don’t pay enough on warm sunny day with no traffic anymore. Fk em
This is the first video I've ever given a thumbs down to simply bc most of it is not true. 1. I80 is not used as a training ground for new drivers it's just the quickest way to get from the west coast to east coast or its simply the shortest rte from the shipper to receiver or whatever each case may be but it's not a training ground. 2. Companies don't force drivers to take i80 instead of 90 or 94 so that they are closer to services. Companies want u to take the shortest rte possible to save on fuel. I've been with swift, Crete, and prime and gone from west coast to east coast and vice versa and the assigned rte was either 80/90/or 94 whichever was shorter. So ur theory is bogus. New driver or very experienced driver it don't matter they want u to go the same way. Now which way u actually go is up to u. A big reason why i80 is so dangerous during winter is bc of all these super truckers trying to show off to everyone and go 80 during inclement weather and causing accidents. The bull haulers, FedEx, owner operators whose trucks aren't governed, and plenty of others trying to be the fastest truck out there. Don't blame it on the rookies. Plenty of new drivers make it safely thru winter u just don't know about it. I was one of them. I was with swift my first 6 years never had an accident bc I was the slow one and stayed safe. I have trucks pass me all day every day. I've had trucks pass me during a winter storm bc I'm going too slow for them and 20 miles later they are jackknifed and in the ditch. Simply going too fast. Was it worth it? They don't know any better. That super trucker mentality. But ur whole msg is bogus. The companies I've been with don't work that way. And there is no training ground for new drivers. It's just whatever roads and hwys get u from shipper to receiver.
Well i. Sorry you are totally wrong. I dont mind a thumbs down. But after 28 years and to fleets tbat i had training at those mega carriers i know exactly what i am say. And i am not putting down new drivers and if you are taking offence you must be one of them
Super trucker is a praise. You are just to slow and scared. It is ok you can be that way. Super truckers know things that you could learn. What for the next video on this if you didn't like this you will hate that

The company routes the truckes that way they dont tell them y. They are just employees. But thats the reason from an insider
20 Years ago they rarely closed the road it's who's driving trucks now.
This is so true
20 years ago most men still had testosterone and didn’t need a safe place
I drive 80 daily in Wyoming for my job and I consistently see truckers not driving for the conditions. We had another 80+ vehicle pileup again today due to a semi starting a chain reaction. These guys need more/better training. You are spot on!
It's so bad because drivers are in a rush. And everyone is poorly trained.

They need to park. They go to slow to climb and spin out then get hit. I usually run 90 / 94 in winter way safer
“If you’re not progressing in your industry you should park your truck” will be my mantra for 2020
So if I park my truck cause I'm uncomfortable with the situation, then I'm not progressing my career?
I agree with you on facing your fears. I got in a car roll over many years ago because of a bad snow storm. I still tense because of it, but I haven't given up. Instead I been facing my fears and learning different saftey measure for mother nature. Keep on trucking

@@truckingreviewchannel I meant to say 94
That road can be bad even in the summer. I was delayed for 6 hrs because of the wind that was in August.
Elk Mountain, worst stretch of road in America. Nearly 200 trucks are blown over every year here.

Any chance you can overlay time and temp over the winter videos.
Some of those drivers out there think it's I-80 miles an hour .
Slow down and get to where you're going safely

So much of this can be avoided simply by slowing the hell down... It’s just common sense.
Slow trucks pack up and spin out. They should probably park

Usually most of the time in winter we prevented such and instead took another ways towards a more clear roads. Q
I always care about the hole....I had to say that...sorry! Good video sir.
Rite its such a good thing and it comes with fun bags
@@truckingreviewchannel lol
75 mph? You're not barred at 63?
Heck no im o/o
@@truckingreviewchannel it's the law here
It's only deadly if a driver makes it that way.
No way would I be driving in those conditions
Yeah 80 real deadly, don't wanna see that
Stay in the sun
Should just rename elk mountain to Mt.Doom in winter
why im i here state Wyoming
We are told to park if we have to chain up. IMHO it's no load is worth chaining up. We never run 70 west of Denver no matter the season. Maybe I'm scared, don't care what you say. I'd rather park it while I can still find a spot. Not going to be in that mob parking whereever when they close the road. Not going to be on TV cause I'm in a pile up. So you go super trucker.
I dont care if you stop so no one should care if I drive
Be safe bud
10 4. U2
He also running in packs not good because you have one truck racks then you all wreck if you're running in packs
Yes
L Tukes you rock.
Sleet and snow
And the last sentence about mega carriers thinking i70 thru CO is too dangerous may be true but they still want u to go that way if it's the shortest route.
I fear driving everyday out there with the crazies but its gotta be done..lol..BE SAFE
Me 2
No it don’t. I can count on one hand how many times I’ve driven in the snow since 2002. RESCHEDULE is word my DISP hears from me nowadays. This job don’t pay enough on warm sunny day with no traffic anymore. Fk em
Yeah i worry more about what the other idiots might do.
ps wyoming in winter is not a game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Truckers make it deadly!
company pack up I 80
No, of course...God forbid you have any kind of govt regulation.....that old American mindset, Jeeez lol.
Foreigners.
Nice accent :-)
Dude you don't have a clue whatcha your talking about.......none of what your saying is true......far as the lanes...
Actually i do after 28 years and employees and all that. I speak with more authority than anyone else. But thank you for your opinion
i drive 80 mph 😆
😫😫😫
Hahaahah
What for the next video on this if you didn't like this you will hate that
Yes i see you are a company driver who hates the big boys. Hahaaha swift Crete prime. My god know wonder your a bby idiot
Look i can give you a thumbs down also take that bitchis
