I wanna mention launchers, like ZDL for Zdoom, for organizing multiple files, .WADs and .PK3s. Doom modding can change any day and get deeper, so this is a great intro to mods.
I really appreciated this tutorial. There's plenty of more in-depth tutorials out there, but this was the first one to correctly gauge my level of intelligence and prior understanding of how Doom works because everything else skipped steps that I'm sure are trivial to most people but which I couldn't figure out

Always a good thing to have tutorials to introduce people to doom modding and how to play it. There's an immense number of good mods out there and lots of creative ideas.
Instead of dragging mod file to GZDoom you can also right-click on mod file and select Open with - GZDoom and save. This way it will automatically open every mod (wad or pk3) file with GZDoom and start it.
I got into modding Doom last year, Brutal Doom, Blades of Agony and Thatcher's Techbase. Incredible games that rival a lot of paid releases. Thanks Zlim!
I do want to note (if not noted in the video) is this is all doable on the Steam Deck - which is how I play GZDOOM. This includes all the TC mods you see here, and any gameplay mods you may ever want.
I briefly mention that it's playable on phones and other devices but for now we are focusing on PC :D But great information! I'll spread it to anyone who asks :D

Also, if you have doom 1/2 installed on steam, on the c drive, gzdoom will often auto detect the doom files. On the side note, gzdoom also supports heretic, hexen, strife, chex quest and hacx. (There maybe other stuff compatible with that i'm not aware of)
So many WONDERFUL Doom/Doom 2 mods to be enjoyed. I guess newbies should start with classics like Project Brutality, Brutal Doom, High Noon Drifter but there's so much variety. Total conversions like Ashes 2063 (Mad Max) and The Golden Souls trilogy (Mario Doom) are just beautiful and are my personal favourites.
Great stuff, I'd recommend Demonsteele and Doom Exp as gameplay mods you might enjoy. Highly recommended WADs are - Eviternity, Valiant (and Valiant Vaccinated, which supports gameplay mods), Elementalism (which is just gorgeous), Winter's Fury (an epic classic) and Back To Saturn X (which is just a masterpiece)@@ZlimBratSki

Ohhhh yeahhhhh! Project brutality, grezzo 2, and more. The engine is great and you can upscale the sprites and tweak everything to make it gorgeous max payne slowmo dismemberment mayhem! The best! Infinate gameplay!
I play my games and mods on mobile android with Delta touch for Doom 1,2 and 3 + heretic / hexen. Quad touch for all Quake mods and Zeta touch for Duke + other build games (Ion fury, AMC squad, Blood, ...). If you have the mobile power, really a must download for boomershooters fans. Easy to use and almost endless content.

Maybe show the audience at least one frontend that allows for saving some time....I'm still using ZDL. By the way you said something about playing these on mobile.....I did not really delve into that, i just used Magic Dosbox (basically Dosbox for phones) to play Doom. Hell yeah! :) I barely have any frontend myself to show yet, so I might have to implement it somehow in a future video, this was meant as just the basic of the basics, to get you running :) I did elevate it and made it clearer in the description. Have you tried out the total conversion mod Rekkr? It's a full game on Steam now made entirely with gzdoom I believe. It's pretty cool. It's like Heretic with a demonic Viking theme.
i keep getting a system error saying the code execution cannot proceed because ‘zmusic.dII’ was not found. anyone know what i’m doing wrong or how i can fix this?
I try it the first time on my new windows 11 pc and when I boot it up it just froze on me but then when I restart my computer gzdoom would not boot up and worst of all somehow my whole computer was corrupted and made me do a factory reset, I need help PLZ D:
To my knowledge you can't run the mods from steam no, but you can copy the pk.3 file into the GZDoom folder, create a shortcut for GZDoom where you want and launch the mod like that :)
hello, im trying to add the "use to pickup" mod to the latest ashes 2063 standalone bundle. do i unzip the whole mod and drag it to the gzdoom application?
The Standalone bundle has everything you need in it, you don't need any extra things for the stand alone, if you want to add more things to it I think it's best using the PK3 version of Ashes

@ZlimBratSki running the latest version of GZDoom. Doom 2 WAD is in the folder, but when I move the Trench Foot file in there too it doesn't boot up the game. Doesn't happen with a few mods I've downloaded.

Each mod or map has a readme file that contains which version it is made for. "Maps\AlienVendetta.wad" adds the Alien Vendetta mapfile "Mods\BrutalDoom\brutalv21.pk3" adds the Brutal doom mod. It does, but Brutal Doom sometimes dosent work on the other hand. It messes with the GZDoom files, so you might have to remove it all and reinstall. There a lot about this in various forums
Yes you can, but the mods your running have to be compatible with each other. So either google around to find out or experiment yourself to see what works :)
@ Don't worry i figured it out I need to run BYOC (the pk3 file) and Myhouse.wad (which is a wad file but it's in a seperate folder and i used ZDL to get it to work so i did it Yay

There's even a Quake source port on Android, with which you can play Wrath Aeon of Ruin. This is crazy stuff.

Hi, I need to play the Brutal Wolf3d mod. Wolf3d doesnt have a WAD file in the steam files so how would I get that running in GZdoom?
You need the WAD file from DOOM not from Wolf3d. To run Wolf3D you need wolf's Pk.3 file :)

Du markerar först PK3 filen, håller in CTRL och markerar de addons du vill starta också, när allt är markerat drar du det bara till GZDOOM

Turner you should ask Randall in the Discord, he plays exclusively on the Steamdeck which works as a gamepad :)

Just open GZDoom without dragging any mods to it will start the game normally without any mods.

@ Don't worry i figured it out I need to run BYOC (the pk3 file) and Myhouse.wad (which is a wad file but it's in a seperate folder and i used ZDL to get it to work so i did it Yay
I cannot for the life of me get gzdoom to work. I have tried countless times. It seems like I'm not getting all the files when I download for some reason
All installs come with the .wad file, search for it :)
Yea its hard for us newdies... I drag and drop with ctrl... and can't even figure out how to make a doom folder
I right click on gzdoom and keep everything in there
