your description of not using enough strings while playing lead is where i stand right now. i've played guitar for a long time and am an ok rhythm player and have taken up lead. i've gotten better and my instincts have led me to drop some double stops in my soloing, however i definitely have some work to do. subscribed!
I can't help sounding like a beginner, because I am a beginner. I have only been playing guitar for 2 months. I outright suck at guitar, and I am currently at square one, learning my first 28 chords and practicing chord changes. I also play easy 3 and 4 chord songs. I don't mind learning slowly as I am retired and have already been playing the Baritone Ukulele for just over a year now and can play tons of advanced beginner to intermediate songs on that. Six strings are hard. LOL.
For the c major, I sometimes use my ring finger to fret both the sixth and fifth strings on the third fret. A bit of a different sound adding that low G.
Hey Andrew, I started experimenting with my first own solos, using ur Videos and tutorials on how to connect scales. I feel like i got a basic understanding of how that works now. However my solos often come out pretty boring and unsatisfying, which is why I have never really learned different techniques, such as bends, hammer ons, pull offs etc. Somehow I haven’t found any tutorials on youtube on how to properly use these techniques and especially how to do it „cleanly“. So it would be awesome, if u could talk about that in any of your next videos. Thanks for ur content!! Greetings from Germany🤞
Im a few months in and strumming is my main focus right now. Im learning that you want to pick kinda floating in your hand. Im slowly getting it and am trying to get that wrist rhythm down.
I've never understood why some people mute the 5th string when playing D as XX0232, yet also play 200232 with their thumb over the low E string. What's wrong with X00232? There are two A (5) notes in this voicing, but so what?
When I do bending I didn't realize I was perfect pitch and I just didn't have issues with bending at all. Once I listen to how high something should be I can bend up to that not properly
Lol….I use fender 346 in thin, have it barely sticking out because I do a lot of pinch harmonics. Been doing so for almost 50 years. I do stick it out when strumming though, and sometimes cup it in my palm when playing finger style.
Ive played guitar since i was a kid.. i play piano too.. Excellent in SolFa and have a decent knowledge on Music theory and how chords r made... I just got into electric guitar n started learning Scales.. Mainly focusing in the 5forms of Pentatonic and Major scales.. Now i have no clue what to do with them.. How do i progress from this? Help plis? Im stuck here and doing side quest like Sweet picking, tappin, hybrid picking, some arpeggios, learning some iconic solos.. But i dont really noticed any improvement.. can u help?
Hey Andrew. Thank you for another great video! I was wondering if you could make a video about diminished chords and how they fit into the chord roadmap:)
There is only the one diminished chord within the chord roadmaps since it's the only diatonic one. You can find those shapes here: th-cam.com/video/e4jUC7eaSRU/w-d-xo.html They're at 3:55 and 6:37 of that video :)
Looks like your camera is in Auto Focus and is sometimes getting confused and locking its focus point to your hands. It might have a Sport mode, if so find a switch for Portrait mode or just go Full manual and set the focus distance from the camera lens out to your chair. As for playing, I find myself sometimes with the dreaded gorilla grip on the neck, which pulls the fretted notes out of tune. (bad hand, bad hand, lol).
On the subject of vibrato, I see this a lot in tutorials for beginners like me in which the guitar teacher isn't actually demonstrating vibrato but some other concept/lick or whatever and they're shaking the neck doing vibrato all the time and I'm like: "Dude, keep the neck still so I can see what you're doing, fergawdsakes!" LOL!
i'm trying to learn chords now but some of them it seems like I have everything in the right place but my fingers seem to mute the strings sometimes even when i'm following the chord chart also I will say my left hand has less webbing where my thumb connects to my first finger and I also can't bend my thumb anymore do to me slamming it into car door when I was younger. I will also say it is a bit hard to grip the neck fully but I managed to work around that it seems . I hope that is not why and if it is something else would you happen to have any advice?
If you're muting adjacent strings when playing chords, then you're probably letting your fingers collapse a little too much. Your fingers should come directly down on the strings, right on the tips. You'll likely need to develop some more muscle memory as well, which will come with repetition. Keep at it, you'll get it :)
@@andrewclarkeguitar k I know I just started now with what u told me to but now instead of muting it makes a slight buzz every now then I’ll let you know if it gets any better in the future thanks again
I mostly use a pick, but I couldn't deny that having a decent fingerpicking familiarity can only be a good thing, especially on stage. I need to be better haha.
I find myself holding too loose and the pick turns and I'm picking with the side of the pick. Then I get frustrated and hold tight and attack the strings like, I think, they are meant to be struck.. Ala SRV I'm lost but navigating
You'll need to learn how to make micro-adjustments while holding the pick. The pick will move in your fingers, and as it does you'll have to make those small movements. It takes some effort to learn, but I promise it's worth it. Even aggresive players are holding it more loosely than you think.
@andrewclarkeguitar i appreciate your encouragement, dude, from FL. I use a bigger less flexible pick. I may try different picks as well as your advice. Thanks a mil
Technically, you're right. But to me, that low E sounds pretty bad in there in most contexts. I'd prefer to put that E somewhere among the higher notes.

Is the video with the double stops the same as the rhythm guitar video?

Punk guitarists: Do the opposite of everything recommended in this video
Nah, punks need muting too.
The thing of moving smoothly between lead and rhythm is really the key for me. I try not to think about it in that way. Really enjoy the content here!
30 years in and I'm still feeling like a learner I don't think that will end but you get relaxed with yourself and can play for fun in the end

Go and check out "Guitar Mastery". The guy Claus that runs the channel has really helped me with a lot of what you're talking about. 👍

That's great! It's not something a lot of people can do right away. You're lucky :)
Let’s see you bend up 2 steps (4 frets) from the 22nd fret on a 22 fret guitar 😂

Can you do a video on how to do melodies for any genre. for beginners, intermediate, and expert ( but mostly beginner and intermediate)
It might be tough to wrap all that up into a single video. But I'll try and put something together.

For me it’s all about the strumming hand. If you can’t keep rhythm, it doesn’t matter how many scales you know

Am I the only one who thought of that one Nick Jonas video 5:46 😂😂
Am I the only persone who doesnt use a pick? most guitar strumming advice here on you tube centers around using a pick.
There are some folks that don't use one. It can be a stylistic choice. Though I do think it's best to be able to play both with one and without one.
its the power chord rock bias of the 1980's and 1990's still holding strong

I use hockey tape or skateboard grip tape on my plectrums.
Or you can play the D chord with all strings on purpose, so that you're playing a D major add 9 or D/E.
