I distinctly remember doing this job when I installed the ABF cams. Took me 2 days to realise that I had installed the dizzy 180 deg out. Was pretty chuffed when the engine started once more.
You go into it a bit, but I am still unclear as to how one tensions the belt to 45 deg tension without moving the timing marks. Some say you must put all the slack on the front side of the belt so that you can take the slack up before the engine tries to turn. Apparently there was a VW tool that was used to lock the cams from moving. It seems to do this job with ease, one needs to also have the lower timing belt cover off to be able to minupulate slack around the crank and intetmediate shaft cogs. That is the mistake I made back in the day.

What's the pipe rubbing against the cam belt? Surely that will rub through.
