Fat Biking New Mexico With Skydio2

  • Trying out our new toy Skydio 2 for the first time. We are very impressed. Still learning what all it can do but it’s tracking system is much much more advanced than our Mavic Air. In fact the Mavic Air doesn’t even come close to tracking this well. Put Skydio 2 up in the air and forget it. It does what it’s meant to do. Track. We are using the beacon and the phone together to monitor and control the drone in flight. Many of the trails featured in this video are fat bike specific. Please do not attempt these trails if you don’t have a true fat bike. It’s very silty and sandy and fat bikes protect the integrity of the trail and will not destroy the thin crust that has been built up over the years.

    Great footage!! Just out of curiosity.. why a fat bike and not something like a Nice XC hard tail?? I love my XC hard tails and I guess im looking for a reason a fat bike would be a good replacement..

    • @NewMexicoOutside
      @NewMexicoOutside  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Very good question. Once you try a nice fat bike you’ll probably want one…
      Why fat bikes?
      With a fat bike you are not limited on the tire width. You can run up to 5 inch wide tires. And any size wheel below that if you wanted ~ 27.5+, 29+, 26, etc.
      Fat bikes are like monster trucks, the Jeep’s of the bike world. They can go anywhere and are unlimited compared to our skinny tire bikes. You can ride through all four seasons and all surface types on the same bike. With minimal trail impact. Snow, sand dunes, arroyos, cobblestone river beds, slick rock, hard pack, you name it.
      And they help build/roll in the trail. So you’re actually doing trail maintenance as you ride. Smoothing out all those skinny tire mud ruts is an extra bonus for your local singletrack.
      Our goal is to inspire more people getting outside and encouraging adding a fat bike to the quiver. Go explore more places and have less of an impact while riding in sandy softer soils. Broaden your horizons with a nice fat bike. Explore the many miles of sandy arroyos and dunes in the southwest without pizza cutting through the desert crust (“pizza cutting” increases erosion).
      Here are some fat bikes in the wild deserts of New Mexico. Mariposa Fat Bike Trail system. Keep singletrack single and tread lightly. The desert takes a very long time to heal and vegetation doesn’t recover like it does in greener areas.

    There are people that are very into the cinematic experience you are providing. These are trails you have been riding for a long time and you know ever inch of the trail, every nuance. But for me, after I watched one the others are just a repeat. You are not providing any information. I watch biking videos to find out what the trail(s) are like. You have a nice large following so just ignore me. But check out Van Girl Yuka. She does some great informative mountain biking videos.

    Always associate fat bikes with snow and soft muddy conditions or sand only. That is what I use mine for. These trails don't look any more loose and silty than St. George and virgin Utah. Why no regular bikes on some of these trails. They are just tame blue trails.

    • @NewMexicoOutside
      @NewMexicoOutside  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Looks are deceiving. It’s very very sandy for miles. Unfortunately standard width tires plow and rut the the loose soils on the trail resulting in massive damage cutting through the thin layer of crust that has developed over many many years. We don’t get rain here to help the soils bind. It is a very unique situation in this area. Riding fat bikes help maintain the trail and ensure riding can continue on these private lands.

      @@NewMexicoOutside Sounds reasonable. Besides, why use a hammer when you need a sledge hammer. Must be going tubeless to run low PSI and not pinch flat.
