  • My DIY homemade (homebrew) 1000W 6.5hp lawn mower engine inverter generator that I used as a backup power supply for at least 5 years before moving. This lawn mower inverter generator worked extremely well, and was built to last. Enjoy the video!

    Very nice, only one surgestion is to rubber mount the inverter to help with vibrations. I had one that was solid mounted and the vibrations over time ended up cracking the printed circuit board in side. But other than that excellent work.

      Jim Miles Thanks Jim. If you look in the video, you will see 4 thick felt pads that I used when mounting the inverter to help dampen the vibrations. Foam rubber would be even better.

    Nice build quality. Two small things come to mind. 1) You would not have had to isolate the generator ground if you had mounted everything to wood instead of steel plate. 2) Your belt underneath doesn't have a lot of contact with the generator pulley, maybe 90 degrees of arc. Putting the tensioner on the inside would increase the pulling traction without adding stress to the belt. (think like using a smaller pulley on a supercharger, you need more surface area on the belt)

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I changed the tensioner since this video was made, and there's much better traction on the belt now. :-)

    You could mount a 5 gal gas can on the end of the frame and run a fuel line to the motor. Would be better then filling a factory 1/4-1 gal tank every few hours. Also if anybody needs to run high amps (100+) but don't want big bulky wires then check out Silicone Wire, 8 gauge Silicone Wire can handle 200 amps max.

    Great video. I made mine using a 3/4 inch HDPE base and then used large fender washers to secure it to the base. I use all stainless steel bolts & casellated nuts & cotter pins & lockwashers. Stainless steel lasts forever. HDPE can last 20-30 years if left in the sun. Avoid plywood or steel plates. Steel is too damn heavy. a piece 3/4 HDPE is alot lighter, and will never rot or rust. HDPE can be bought new or salvaged from old boats.

      Not true. After 5 years of use, I would have noticed something. Disconnecting the wire off a (1) wire 10si alternator will not cause any damage. All that will happen is the rotor will spin without any current being supplied to it. I have used this alternator for years w/o any issues. I made my own regulator for this alternator which works much better. I have a video showing all the modifications.

      A 6.5 hp Tecumseh engine would use more fuel than the 2hp harborfreight engine anytime.
      That 6.5 hp e ngine is over powered for that 1000 watt prowatt inverter and for the alternator.
      Actually those harborfreight generators had a good rating back then and they where putting out 800 watts on continuous usage. They got replaced by another model since and cost more.
      I like the concept of incorporating a inverter and a battery, but the battery need to be cycled or it will die early and batteries have a lifespan.

    what size is your pulley under engine shaft. it looks like I have same size but just be sure. Give me radius measurement, I have everything on hand except for frame. I have self propelled Yardman 6.5hp lawnmower that have spring loaded starter system ( no need electric starter), first time pull start the engine and let it run then cut off, engine winds up spring before dies out. Then press lever and it release energy from spring to start engine again without pull start. it's so damn cool. Former owner left her mower to me even I have my own Toro 6.5 hp self propelled and bought John Deere LT150 riding mower. So thought why not rip off engine from Yardman frame and modify for generator. Am thinking of getting 2 KW or 5 KW inverter. I can go to Pick N Pull to find 80 amp Alternator size of hand (ford fiesta and several small cars have those because smaller alternator, less drag from "electric braking" from power load). Two 12v batteries in Parallel would cover enuf juice to run 5 KW inverter while generator running, charging batteries. Just wanted to have enuf power to run lights and ref during blackout. I can buy 10kw LF inverter but am afraid that it won't be enuf to power entire house due to actual wattage limitation ( says 10KW but actual limit is 5KW, Chinese made).
    so let me know of ur pulley size under engine

      It's probably destroyed by now. I sold it almost 2 years ago. I got $375.00 for it, which isn't too far off from what it cost me to make, minus my labor. Most Bahamians don't take care of things. I'm sure it was left outside in the rain, and all rusted up by now.

    Although this is a nice set up, I am making one that runs a little differently, mine I am using an electric mower motor with an alternator with a small solar panel hooked up to it, then the battery and invertor hooked up to it...its a great set up that requires no fuel...hopefully it works...

    If you got a bigger battery you can turn this into a hybrid generator using solar panels with a charge controller, using primarily solar power when its sunny outside and the engine when there is a lack of sunshine

    what size pulley do you suggest

    • @MrDieseltwitch
      @MrDieseltwitch 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to know what engine your running and what speed the alternator is rated for. Most alternators produce max power around 5,000RPM (will do 8k but you will burn it out) and most engines run around 3,600RPMs so to get them to match you need a pulley ratio of 0.75:1

    Looks really solid and well made, considering how these usually are.
    But having a gas generator running an alternator, to put through diodes, to make DC, to invert, to make AC, really bugs me.... There doesn't seem to be a good way to do this with an automotive alternator designed for low voltage output.

      If the pulley ratio is right, it should be fine.

    • @MrDieseltwitch
      @MrDieseltwitch 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has more todo with where you live and how much power you're looking to get out of it. I have a few of these. I've built 24 & 48V systems to do every thing from jump start my equipment to running a 10kW Con/30kW Burst. An engine loses about 3-5% of its power per 1,000ft of elevation. at 1 mile (denver), accounting for all the losses in the system (10% for the pulley, 50% for the alternator) max you can run is about a 1.5kW Alternator or 120Amp, One guy commented below about using a audio system capacitor... only ways to go if you don't have a battery in the system. The alternator will burn out quickly with out it!
