- Drive through Diablo Range via California State Route 130 from San Jose to Patterson, which we did in Fall 2020.
This drive was very scenic in many ways, and very windy too! Highly recommend not going there after having eaten a full lunch.
Some parts honestly felt like a computer wallpaper (1:18:08 and 1:49:35 just to name a couple).
Excellent drive to do on a weekend!

I found this road by accident in 1972 with a buddy, and drove up to the observatory, which, by that time was almost dark! Then we drove all the way back! My car was a 1964 Chevy Impala. I also did the same drive in 2006 - in a Chevy Impala!
I absolutely LOVE this road. Discovered it when I was in Santa Clara / San Jose for work in 2013. I even went back in 2018 *and* 2019 with family. The amazing drive, visiting the Observatory, then the amazing passage from forest to desert - incredible landscape. Made a video too in 2013 but it's only 720p, so I'm glad you made a better one!
So glad you enjoyed it! This road indeed has a lot to offer even though it is only ~80 miles long. 🏜🌲
Thanks for posting this video. I took this route once from San Jose to Patterson after a major collision shut down 680. Worst decision ever. It was dark and the fog was insanely thick. Like maybe 30 feet of visibility. Thought I was going to die.
Wow. Glad you made it safely to your destination.
Did you?
I had my heart in my mouth for most of this drive. Drove it west from Patterson to San Jose in 1992. The stupid map I had showed a fairly straight route. It was anything but. (Regular people didn't have GPS back then.) Too many hairpin switchbacks to count. Started out in brilliant California sunshine. About halfway up I was in pea soup fog or a cloudbank (I'm no meteorologist). Didn't clear until I was halfway down the west slope, apart from a brief clearing at the Lick Observatory. The worst part was the animals looming up out of the fog just feet from the front bumper. Easily the most nerve-wracking drive I have ever made. had a similar experience on the Skyline Drive in Virginia and that was after dark, but the the fog wasn't as dense or continuous, although there were far more animals there (deer in groups of 10 and 12).
Thank you for sharing this, what a story..! Anecdotally, we also thought it was an easy route before embarking on this journey. The view was worth it though.
I'm amazed on just how few guard rails there are on this road.
On the plus side, you feel even closer to the surrounding nature 🌲
just found your video when searching for info on State Route 130. Driving it in a few days on my way up to San Francisco. I expect it will be green hills for me since we had so much rain! (March 2024). Thanks for posting this!
One of the biggest things i miss after moving back home from california is this road.
Hope you get to enjoy it again in person soon!
WHY did you cut it short? You should have gotten at least to I-5!!
this is el camino 130 all the way in to san jose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful drive! Is there cell phone coverage between Mt. Hamilton and Patterson?
Inexistant I am afraid. But the view will keep you busy :)
Thanks for this great video! I woke up this morning and wanted to road trip to one of the recent fires near me, and then I discovered your video! Do you have any other drives through recent burn zones?
Thank you for your kind words! Yes, one other instance where we noticed similar landscapes was in Lassen Volcanic National Park (the video is available on our channel and has the title "Lassen Volcanic National Park Scenic Drive in 4K"), more particularly at 4:48 of that video.
Stay safe and be careful about the poor air quality near those places!
@@MachineBazi I actually went and drove a good part of the road yesterday after watching your video all the way through. It was interested to see, now about a year later, how things had already started to grow back, somewhat. Though it was sad to see how many of the larger trees seemed to be completely dead, even though they were still standing. Thank you for the lassen suggestion, will watch that today sometime! :)
Hey, did you do 130 connected to mines road and did you go through patterson pasS?
We have not yet, but it's on our to-go list :)
Hell no patterson pass is the most horrendous road ever also dangerous u can save 15 minutes but you risk u life the road is so stretch in some of the parts is no enough space for both cars one of them have to wait until the other pass
Patterson pass- on weekdays- Commuters take it all the time. In the mornings it runs east towards Livermore. In the evenings it runs west towards tracy. That is not to say there are still a few cars wanting to go in the opposite direction. Just stay vilgilant. Most of the road does not have the yellow line in the middle of the road so people tend to drive in the middle. Word of advise stay on your side of the road as much as you can.
Do you know how long it takes from Turlock to San José on the 130?
Roughly 3 hours I would say - with the benefits of having amazing sceneries along the way :)
@@MachineBazi Thanks!
what are those yellow sign marked road grates for? like the one at 1:09:07
I believe these are cattle guards (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattle_grid), which are aimed at being impassable to farm animals.
From the wiki article, it seems one use case is private owners who don't want their animals escaping their property.
@@MachineBazithank you, I went on the mountain pass yesterday from Patterson to the Bay Area and it was a great drive
They are cattle guards, to contain cattle in one area
Is this from Patterson to San Jose?
Yes, but the other way around (San Jose to Patterson) :)
@@MachineBazilooking for a faster way home instead from 580 to hwy 5
580 is the fastest way to get to San Jose from Patterson the only other fast way is to use the 152. If you use this road there’s a lot of turns and it will save you from traffic but it takes a lot more time
@@slickrick7455 580 and 152 are the fastest ways because they’re freeways and they don’t have as many turns. The 130 does take you directly to Patterson, but it takes longer because there’s a lot of turns
It's really a shame the fires wiped out so much around Mt. Hamilton, I'm sure it was even more stunning when it was still alive and well.
We feel the same and hope that the next wildfire seasons will not be as bad. In the meantime, we will keep on being amazed by these beautiful landscapes through more scenic drives!
why you honking at that poor driver?
I'm not sure what timestamp are you referring to? We actually advocate for chill driving and would honk only by necessity, e.g. to signal immediate danger. Cheers!
