Cool. Love the top lists. I wish I would have saved all the Microprose games I owned back then. Fortunately I kept a few in the box from those days, namely, Pirates, Airborne Ranger and Red Storm Rising. When they went on to PC VGA/DOS era they also made some good games and I do still have a couple of those.
Yep, glad I kept some myself. I sure wasn’t thiking I will want to be playing this in 2022. 😂 Thank for watching as always!! Hope you and your family had a Good Thanksgiving!
I always enjoyed the Silent Service games but Sid Meier's Pirates! is top shelf for me too - such a great game that was ahead of it's time and always fun to play!
Glad you finally got around to this, Tom. My list would echo yours for the most part. I would only replace Stunt Car Racer with Project: Stealth Fighter. 👍👍
Thanks. I made five videos and then combined them all to create one. I had Pirates done last weekend. I could have put one game out as I went along. Project Stealth Fighter would have been on my top 10. Go, Cowboys!
Thanks for the memories! I always learn something from you when I watch your videos. I didn't know about Sid Meier and Microprose, only had seen his name with Civilization. Great video!
I was the lead programmer of a submarine simulator (1914 Shells of fury) developed by an indy studio in Germany, released in 2006/2007 for PC. When we started the project we actually tried Silent Service on a C64 emulator for inspiration. In the early 2000s, Silent Hunter seemed to be the only 'modern' competitor.
Agree, "Pirates" is definitely "Numero Uno" in terms of Microprose Games, probably even for all Commodore 64 games. Such a big game on a small computer is remarkable, and if there was one game you could take with you to a desert island to play on a C64, it would be "Pirates". I would have placed "Silent Service" higher, but that's just my opinion.
Good list. Silent Service was a favorite. I also really liked Crusade in Europe. Besides the good game I really like the game manuals. I also had a subsequent Pirates game on a higher end mac around 1994. Very good.
MicroProse released so many great games for the Commodore 64 and Amiga 😺👍. PIRATES! is definitely the best game ever. I had it on my Commodore 64 as a tape version and Amiga 500. I still have MICROPROSE SOCCER on my Commodore 64 as a disk version in a compilation called SOCCER STARS. 😺👍🕹️
Hey Ari!! Yes these are great on the Amiga too! I could actually say best on C64 and Amiga! Were you a fan of Microprose Soccer? Would that be in your top 5?
@@FloppyDeepDive Yes, it might be in my Top 5. Also, because it's the only sports game, i ever know from MicroProse 😺👍🕹️🕹️. And hey, be cool and stay retrospective 😺👍🕹️.
Another great video 👍 Almost agree with this Top Five, but I must add here also “Kennedy Approach”. I still have my original C64 tape, it’s a wonderful game 🙂! Bravo Tom!
Microprose were legendary for sure. I remember them most for Times of Lore on the C64. A lot of their earlier titles were simulators on current or recent past "real war" scenarios which i didnt like. On the PC i really loved "Mech Commander" I have the original and true to Microprose standard, it has a thick manual, charts, and other trinkets as standard. It was developed with FASA deeply involved so all the finer details can be included. This was a game i stayed indoors till i finished. Even shutting out my gf for a few days so i can finish the game. Owning a Mad Cat II mech' with clan weapons was a priority! :D
From that list I think I would like Slient Service and Pirates a lot. The only Microprose game I had BITD was F-15 Strike Eagle, which was a load of fun too.
Silent Service & Pirates! dominated my playlist throughout the 80s/90s - the activision reboot of Pirates wasn't bad, it's just hard to recreate magic -
RE:quote,"..I wonder if there's 5 submarine C-64 video games I could do a TH-cam video on.." - YES PLEASE! You already mentioned Silent Service (classic spent many hours on it), there's also Up Periscope and Tom Clancy's The Hunt for Red October (never had that one) and others.. Like your channel enjoyed the video
A list like this is always going to be tough because of the sheer number of spectacular games Microprose put out. That being said I definitely think Red Storm Rising should've been included. It was a shockingly realistic simulation and over 30 years later remains my favorite sub game.
Silent Service: Adored it back in the day. Still think about it, even to this day. Stunt Car Racer: Playing it on the Amiga, the C64 version is pretty cool. Gunship: Enjoyed it on the C64.
If it was Microprose you knew it would be good. I forgot that they did Stunt Car Racer. I preferred Red Storm Rising over Silent Service. The only ding I'd give Microprose games was the learning curve was a bit steep sometimes. But once the gameplay mechanics clicked you were in for a great time. If you're looking for other C64 sub games there's Up Periscope!, Red Storm Rising, The Hunt for Red October, Silent Service, and Gato... those are just the ones that come to mind at the moment. They actually made 2 different versions of The Hunt for Red October. One was a simulator and the other was an arcade style game.
So true! You described their games' difficulty perfectly; thank goodness for the keyboard overlays. That's a good list of submarine games. You wrote my next video. Lol.
wow, gunship number 4! that should be number two with a bullet. of course, pirates is number 1. that game was perfect for its time, and is still awesome.
Stunt Car Racer imo was by far more superior on c64 to me, because just thing how impressive it's hardware wise, just insane. I played on Amiga too, but I was actually bit disappointed as I though it would've run with bit faster framerate on so much superior hardware.
I call Airborne Ranger the best NON-Sid Meier (Microprose) game ever released. The best part of these missions were that not only were there rules in some cases, every map was randomly generated, so you couldn't land in the same place and take the same path every time.

Kept all my Microprose games, C64 and MS-DOS/PC!
Pirates is one of the best games ever made for any platform. A true great.
It was groundbreaking for sure!! Thanks for watching!
Loved all of these games…Pirates is the only game I collect on every platform. Such a great game.
Which other platforms do you have Pirates on? Thanks for watching!
I seriously bought a PSP when I saw it had the remake of Pirates! on it. :-) The idea of portable Pirates! was too much of a lure. lol
Great video Tom .. All great games I played them all back in the day ;)
Thanks! You can’t go wrong with Microprose!
I always enjoyed the Silent Service games but Sid Meier's Pirates! is top shelf for me too - such a great game that was ahead of it's time and always fun to play!
Pirates was a masterpiece! Thanks for commenting CGS! Always good to hear from you.

Always gotta work that "Go, Cowboys!" in there somehow. It's gonna be an interesting Christmas Eve that's all I have to say...
Airborne Ranger!
Right! It's an incredible game.
Pirates is one of the very best C64 games, and amazingly it's largely programmed in BASIC. BASIC really had a lot of untapped potential.
That’s incredible!
Awesome work Tom :) ... I remember playing them .. I need to stop repairing for a bit and play some games lol 😆
Right! I have to tell myself to stop making videos and just play some games or work on my broke systems.
Thanks for the memories! I always learn something from you when I watch your videos. I didn't know about Sid Meier and Microprose, only had seen his name with Civilization. Great video!
Appreciate the compliments. Glad you enjoyed it and learned something.
Great video again Tom, always look forward to a release.
Thanks Denny! Glad you liked it!
Microprose Soccer was, in my opinion, the best overhead sports simulator on the C64. It would definitely be on my list.
I liked it a lot myself; it would have been in my top 10 for sure!! Thanks for watching!
Scr on c64. Incredible!
Yep, SCR was one of those games. You wondered how they did that on my C64. So good.

Appreciate the suggestions! I’ll put them on my list. Thanks for watching!

I love the speech in Kennedy Approach! Good choice! Thanks for the praise; I enjoyed making it.

F15 Strike Eagle is top ten for sure!!

Hey, thanks! Glad you are enjoying the channel. I'll put the submarine video on my list.
I had no idea that Silent Service on NES was a port.
Well glad to give you some insight into the Commodore world. Thanks for watching!
Damn I loved all these forget what I played Airborn Ranger on maybe Atari though, great video!
Hey, thanks!! Appreciate you watching.
Your welcome always enjoy your videos @@FloppyDeepDive
Thanks!
Gunship, loved it. There was a bug that allowed you to get the congressional medal of honor for a new pilot.
I never encountered that bug.

Agree; they had the best games. Red Storm was harder to learn so that's why I went with Silent Service over it. Thanks for watching
Ooh, no Stealth Fighter... Don't know about that. ;)
It would definitely be on my top ten!! Thanks for watching!
Silent Service: Adored it back in the day. Still think about it, even to this day.

Never played airborne ranger. Looks cool, will check this one out.
Good pick; you will enjoy that one!
I honestly think Airborne Ranger is the best game on C64

SCR was amazing on the C64!
Outside of Stunt Car Racer, these were all top games for me on my Tandy 1000 as a kid. I'd replace Stunt Car Racer with M1 Tank Platoon.
I’ll have to try them out on my Tandy. Thanks for watching!
Personally, my favourite is Gunship, closely followed by Microprose Soccer and Stunt Car Racer (technically released under the Micro Style label).
Good choices for sure!! I would have put the soccer 6th for me. As always, thanks for watching!!
That’s nuts!
That’s what she said!
My fav was f-117 stealth fighter. Also that pacific ww2 game
Nice!
I call Airborne Ranger the best NON-Sid Meier (Microprose) game ever released.

You do a lot of C64 videos. I'd like to see more on your other computers.
Sure, what would you like to see?
@@FloppyDeepDive For computers, Atari 8-bit Apple II, BBC Micro, Amstrad CPC, Amiga. For game consoles, I like Intellivision and ColecoVision.
Red Storm Rising! Play it!!! :-D Oh... and Project Stealth Fighter!
Both are good ones, but I'll stick with my Top 5.
Microprose Soccer
It’s awesome. It’s my favorite Soccer game on the C64
My list is a little different than yours
5) Airborne Ranger
4) Red Storm Rising
3) Solo Flight
2) Silent Service
1) Pirates!
That's an excellent list!! Solo Flight and Red Storm Rising we're considered! Thanks for watching!
