Norse / Germanic Mythology: Ragnarok

  • In Norse mythology, Ragnarök (Old Norse "final destiny of the gods") is a series of future events, including a great battle foretold to ultimately result in the death of a number of major figures (including the gods Odin, Thor, Týr, Freyr, Heimdallr, and Loki), the occurrence of various natural disasters, and the subsequent submersion of the world in water. Afterward, the world will resurface anew and fertile, the surviving and reborn gods will meet, and the world will be repopulated by two human survivors. Ragnarök is an important event in the Norse canon, and has been the subject of scholarly discourse and theory.
    The event is attested primarily in the Poetic Edda, compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, and the Prose Edda, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson. In the Prose Edda, and a single poem in the Poetic Edda, the event is referred to as Ragnarökr or Ragnarökkr (Old Norse "Doom of the Gods"), a usage popularized by 19th century composer Richard Wagner with the title of the last of his Der Ring des Nibelungen operas, Götterdämmerung.

    I find it interesting that many astronomers and weather people are predicting a mini ice age in the next sun cycle -set to begin shortly, this would equate to 3 long harsh winters.

    Has it occurred to anyone else that the story of Fenrir at Ragnarok killing Odin is something of a self fulfilling prophecy? At the time of his binding, Fenrir had not really caused too much trouble, but because Odin heard a prophecy that Fenrir would kill him, he tricked the wolf by lying to him. So after god knows how many centuries of waiting and thinking about what happened, he struck revenge on the one who imprisoned him. What would have happened if Odin said that he didn't believe the wolf would do him any harm?

      I think this has everything to do with it. They know their fates suggest they are not stuck in time, and have foreknowledge but still had free will and choices. Somehow everything is connected in the myth, but maybe the Asgard are in a 4th time dimension and not in our 3d spacial one, and this is what the Bifrost bridge is?

      tigerspirit1917 everything in norse mythology is cyclical.Odin did not have Fenrir bound because he feared his own death, but rather the destruction of the worlds. He had Fenrir bound out of fear of what he could become. Ragnarok is the prophecy of the the volva, or witch, it is not set in stone what exactly will happen, if it even does. For all we know, Fenrir's bindings could be permanent and non of it matters 😊

    Ragnarok has already been, it occurred when Christianity came to Scandinavia.
    For more than a thousand years ago.
    It began with the Gods disappearance, more and more, when people changed their faith in The old gods and their persona in nature and its inherent powers.
    Balder was the most fairest and most beautiful of all the gods, he was the one who survived Ragnarok.

    I find it quite interesting that every religion, both present, and those we now refer to as mythology, show the world being new and alive and as it is supposed to be, once human beings are eliminated from the equation.

    I feel Ragnarok has already happened. The Ice Age was the three winters. The huge battle among Earth was hidden and burned from the fires of Surtr. Then the two humans. Lif and Lifbrasir repopulated the Earth. The only remains of these stories are the stone runes in Nordic countries. Hail to Odin! Hail to Thor!

    Valhall may have existed. Before giving out the Edda, Snorri traveled to Västergötland to collect myths. And Halleberg some 300 years ago called Hall, and the flat top Valhall was useful model for Snorri when describing what Valhall looked like... wadbring.com/historia/under…

    Do you think it may be possible that the Vikings in their trading with the Middle East may have picked up some things the early Christians believed? This sounds a lot like Matthew 24 and the Book or Revelation and the Book of Enoch. Or maybe all ancient cultures retained knowledge of the same things wherever they went?

    Why could the surviving gods not just revive their dead companions. It could be done just take all the knowledge Odin had left behind and cast the spell. Maybe that was the last information that was given to Odin. Maybe that was last piece of information in the story's were either destroyed or are missing. It would make lot of since. Along since the Aesir would have known of their fates and could have selected different opponents. That is what I think at least.

    • @NixxiomOnYouTube
      @NixxiomOnYouTube 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to understand that this is poetry and isn't meant to be taken literally. It is a collection of metaphors, symbols, and lessons that foretell an oncoming doom, but not really in the way the tale of Ragnarok describes. Either way, the gods in the Norse mythos do not have the power to bring back the dead so easily (look at Baldr for example after his death). The gods of Asgard are not all-powerful, all-knowing beings like other gods claim to be. They learn, they they stumble, and they, unfortunately, can die. Ragnarok is a big subject of study for me as an Asatruar and I wish I could explain to you in a comment what a lot of its meanings stand for (at least to me). If you're interested in learning more about this sort of mythology and its connections to science, as well as other religions, I suggest you go watch "Lady of the Labyrinth" here on TH-cam. Her knowledge of these subjects is incredible.

    • @shriganesh8306
      @shriganesh8306 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will but their is a way the Aesir can revive the dead. Take the souls of the fallen Gods and sow them into the body's of the dead. Then chant the runes of live if they actually exist and though they shall be weaken they will live. Am going of the information an old man in my neighbor hood says he is quite intelligent. So his words I be leave in.

    People have and will ALWAYS steal,borrow, imagine or be inspired by previous works.
    With Tolkien it was Norse Mythology and other stories from Scandinavia because it was what he was interested in.

      I read a book that said many mythologist believe that ragnarok came to be after the christians interacted with the Norse people, so basically it is the Christians putting their beliefs into the Norse Mythology. But who knows.

    • @kelvyiturralde8111
      @kelvyiturralde8111 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Justin Clark Nordic religion came and almost completely went before christianity came to be, ragnarok was written about far before christianity expanded past the city of jerusalem. However I do find it interesting that the Genesis including adam and eve in a garden is so comparable to the two surviving humans in the wood. Maybe all the religions are intertwined. This is why I'm a coexister

      Yeah I'm not saying that norse myth wasn't there before Christianity, but it is interesting that only Norse Myth actually kills off their gods, which is why I believe Christians had something to do with that.

    • @kelvyiturralde8111
      @kelvyiturralde8111 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      True true. But Norse gods have been known to have weaknesses and be able to die before ragnarok too. But you're right christianity may have had its influence.

  • @ArtOfRuin75
    @ArtOfRuin75 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also, I'm sorry, but this is the dumbest comment I've ever read on TH-cam. Christianity was a Jewish sect. So, are you going to tell me Vikings invented Judaism now? Christianity is a Middle Eastern religion, brought to Europe. Not the other way around. The reason they're similar stories to Germanic mythology, is because Christians made them similar to make people find the conversion 'easier'. Please take your remedial 'facts' elsewhere.
