Tunisia's constitution means a secular state with many Christians and Jews and a country of freedoms. Islam is not the state religion. The Tunisian state is secular, but the majority of the people are Muslim by inheritance and by name, that is. Among them are those who are religiously committed and those who do not understand anything about the religion of Islam. Every person is free, and most of them are not committed. For example, Tunisian law criminalizes what is permitted by religion, and the opposite is true. For example, Tunisia is one of the Arab and African peoples who consume the most alcohol. In short, Tunisia is not Iran and its people are white-skinned. Do not compare us to sub-Saharan Africans.
I went on a solo trip to Tunisia in January and visited most of the places you went to. I felt safe and enjoyed it more than Morocco where I felt everyone was just trying to rip me off all the time whereas Tunisia was way more laid back. I'm planning on going again in 2025 to try and see more Roman ruins.

@@tj1913b I based myself in Sousse and then just used the same private guide who took me to the places I wanted to see - El Jem, Carthage, Sidi bou Said. Tunis old town. Felt comfortable with a guide with me plus I got lots of interesting information on the places that I visited
Tunisia is in the first places among the Arab countries and countries in the Maghreb that I want to visit. I want to come to Libya one day and visit the historical places. Love from Azerbaijan to the people of Tunisia
Thank you Tom for this Tunisian Series. I really enjoyed it. If you ever come back to Tunisia, be sure to try these 100% traditional and vegetarian dishes. They will allow you to enjoy the local food while respecting your dietary preferences : 1- Slata Mechouia : A grilled salad made from roasted peppers, tomatoes, onions, and garlic, then chopped and mixed with olive oil and spices. Just ask that they don't add tuna on top 2- Kafteji : A dish made from fried vegetables such as potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, and pumpkin, mixed together and served with bread. It has eggs though, I don't know whether you eat eggs or not 3- Shakshouka : A dish made with tomatoes, onions, and peppers, typically served with eggs poached on top. 4- Lablabi : A chickpea soup typically flavored with cumin, garlic, and olive oil, and often garnished with harissa 5- Couscous with Vegetables : Although couscous is often served with meat or fish, you can always ask for a vegetarian version 6- Omek Houria : a type of mashed carrot salad and it's super delicious
Thank you GhassenSalah, you have made us very happy indeed!!!!....I eat meat, but my wife does not, however, as a veggie, fish is okay, especially Tuna. You've made her very happy, and she loves the descriptions. We both look forward to trying every dish. A Salaam alaicum. :)
The zoom shot of you at 2:26 is wonderfully "Chief Brody On The Beach In Jaws" -- very good use of that technique throughout the whole piece. EVERYTHING about your work (your voice, your open-mindedness, your camera work, your writing) is pure perfection. (I produced network TV for 25 years). You and your work are amazing. THANK YOU!
Thanks for the video. I was considering visiting Tunisia since I have heard cool things about it. This helped provide a lot of clarity to some of my questions. Thanks Tom and hopefully I visit Tunisia soon!
I first went when I was 18 with parents, loved it was hooked,,,then went a few times after that with friends stayed at the Tour Khalef ,,, even after 10 years people in the street remember you, amazing, I am going to go again soon!!! enjoy,
All the words of thanks do not do justice to your efforts. I offer you the most beautiful words of thanks and gratitude from a heart overflowing with love, respect and appreciation for you. Thank you for this wonderful video on Tunisia. I am very happy to have people like you visit Tunisia. All praise, respect and appreciation to you for all this support and interest in my country, Tunisia. 💖👍👍
As tu perdu la raison ? . Thanks Tom, very useful and straightforward feedback on your trip. I'm going there for a couple of month as digital nomad and you gave me great insights and basic tips and tricks. Great job on your videos, very helpful. All the best !
I enjoyed your Tunisia videos. I don't have Arabic and my French isn't great. But I traveled by train to El Djem and Sousse with no trouble. I also did a lot of riding on the Tunis light rail metro system (especially to the Bardo) and the TGM interurban to Carthage and Sidi Bou Said. They were all very easy to use. I was surprised that your videos didn't talk about them.

I wouldn't say Djerba was a "resorty town", it's actually an island that is well worth visiting. Yes, it has some coastal resorts, but it's also a lovely island to explore. I spent four days there and loved it. There are a number of ways to get there, including driving across a Causeway, but personally, I took the short flight from Tunis. What you didn't mention is that there are also flights to Enfidha Airport from many places in Europe. The resorts on the east coast of Tunisia have been popular with holidaymakers from northern Europe for decades. It's not an aspect of the country that I would personally choose to get involved with (all-inclusive resorts just aren't my thing!), but many seem to like it. But Enfidha airport can also be used as a gateway to some of the cities and areas south of Tunis.
Such an amazing and helpful video thank you very much! Had an amazing time in sousse. The E-sim was perfect for some srupid reason i couldn't set it up so my friend helped. ❤
My advice as a tunisian, better have a local guide or a friend there makes it easier, safer and more fun, plus im pretty sure you did not see everything, just the common touristy stuff, beleive me there is much more like hidden beaches, canyens, secluded islands...
The Tunisian local criminals like pick pockets, local markets hustlers, hustlers who try to force tourists to buy mediocre goods in street markets , opportunist thieves, scammers are allowed to keep committing these illegal and immoral acts against foreign tourists in the Tunisian society without impunity , damnation and retribution. Giving excuse and justifications for these crimes by saying they happen in France and England is unforgivable and incomprehensible . Also France and England are Christian countries, these countries are not muslim countries, it is not a good example to follow and compare the situation. Tunisia is a muslim and an arabic country, it is forbidden in islam to commit these horrible and heinous crimes against women and innocent civilians and foreign tourists, these crimes are against humanity, against human rights and they are immoral acts.
There are quite a few allied war cemeteries in Tunisia you may be interested in. And may be you like to visit the War Museum of the Marith line (close to Marith on the P1 state route), although it takes a more German perspective.
Great video! I’ve been there loads of times - first was 1980 with family, and the last was 2018. Always Hammamet or Monastir. Funnily enough, when I was last there in 2018, Hammamet airport took Dinars after security and everything was ridiculously cheap too vs the euro or USD or GBP etc. prices. Not sure if it’s the same now. Monastir is definitely a place to visit one day! The train to Tozeur looks doable and may be one I’ll try someday. Btw on the mobile service, one thing I learned very quickly is to disable iCloud backup or any kind of cloud backup stuff. I did an Ooredoo WiFi hotspot which was $30 to buy (after showing my passport) and the data on top was ridiculously cheap, but I blew through 5GB in 3 hours before realising 😂 I’ll do the eSIM next time though, but the cloud backup thing is an important note. I might have accidentally left the country with some TND.. 🙈
Lovely. And thanks it is good to know that there is ferry from Italy. I did not know. Just flying may a bit boring. I need some adventure than only being an average tourist.
I went to Tunisia at the start of 2012 (one year since the revolution) and our guide at the baths showed us a fake tree with security cameras set up to watch the baths from the Presidential Palace. At this time the Palace was empty and nobody cared about photos. In Carthage, we came across an ad hoc museum filled with artifacts which were taken from the Palace.
As a Tunisian I can tell u that literally no one in Tunisia uses backseat belts, like absolutely no one lol. Also abt the Arabic dialect u said that we have words from Maltese language, well that's wrong bc when u see the common words we have with Maltese language they all have Amazigh/Berber roots. And we do speak English here but it's more common with the younger generations, sometimes these kids speak better English than French. Sorry abt the cuisine, we Tunisian like to add meat to literally every dish, even most salads have Tuna on them. Other than that it's a good video, u rly did a good job covering everything in Tunisia. You are welcome to visit again and come to my home town Hammamet and many other cities as u said (Kairouan, Monastir, Benzart, Mehdia....)

Just to add one more thing to add. Maltese have words from Tunisian and Libyan dialects, not the other way around. And FYI, I am probably the only Tunisian who puts the seat belt in the back seat :D

thank you tom! these are all such useful tips! didn't know at all about the currency policy i.e. you can't get any before actually being in the country
This is super helpful, thank you for the thoughtful and refreshingly non-Anglo-centering video. It's taken me several tries to be able to find one I can say that about. Also thank you for the vegan note. This seemed like a place where you would be able to get fresh juice on the street, etc - did you find that to be the case? If the country is relatively food-independent I'd think the center food market outdoors would have plenty of fresh produce to eat from. Did you find that or no? Thanks again!
Thank you for this, I’ve been to Morocco before and was eager to explore another African country and for mine and my boyfriends 30th we’ve booked to go to Tunisia but started getting a bit nervous because of everything we were reading, also will be using that e-sim! Didn’t even know that was an option.
Hi thanks for the great videos about Tunisia and your honest feedback as well! Just fyi, Tunisia isn’t a hidden gem especially for the French and Europeans in general but unfortunately it’s mainly mass tourism destination especially during summer time (we do have great beaches and it’s quite cheap compared with other Mediterranean destinations). For solo travels, i just recommend gettin intouch with the younger gen as they are more anglophone than the older one. Always use google translate. Do your search beforehand coz for example sfax isn’t a touristy place, no local goes to hang out in there, it’s more of major industrial city (u can go check kerkenah island though). For transportation , use louage (though it’s gonna be one hectic drive :p) or the suburbs trains if needed. We have great food, yes we don’t really have vegan options but you can ask for something in the menu without chicken for example or cheese and they will deliver usually (the hummus ain’t really Tunisian dish though). Regarding safety, it’s like every other country i would say, just watch your staff and don’t go to sketchy places but in general it’s quite safe, we don’t have guns, and no terrorist attacks occurred since a long time. For women, Tunisia is quite pioneer with women rights compared with other Arabic countries, you may get some cat calls like the locals do but overall u should be fine, again just try to use common sense and avoid suspicious people and places. The places that u shouldn’t miss are Djerba, Kélibia, Ain Drahem/Tabarka, The Sahara, El Jem, the old city of Tunis, Sidi bou :) Welcome again!

Thanks Tom for yet again an insightful video, I would like to share an experience I had when I arrived at the Tunis airport late on a Friday evening a couple of months ago, It was difficult getting a taxi and later on I was informed by a local that taxis drivers are avoiding working late at night because they are often robbed, so therefore if possible it's best to avoid taking flights to Tunis arriving late
Hello I’m going from Rome to Tunisia as a challenge to see if I can go to a different confident in less than a day. I’m going to the capital aka Tunis. So my flight would land at 3 pm and depart at 6:30-7:00 pm is that too late to get a taxi and what would be the other form of transportation to get to the airport?
Thanks for ur complement about my country, i would like to say, when u plan to go somewhere, just let ur funs know that, at list, they could help u to visit places nd be with u! U’re gonna feel safe either!! Try to visit next time Bizerte, Ain drahim nd Tabarka!! Widh the best for u !!
I simply want to thank you VERY MUCH indeed for your ability in being able to speak clearly & emphasise on just about everything! I am ever so glad that you liked it! Well done, I have truly appreciated it! All the best.
Well next would try to visit the up north of tunisia and see the most beautiful scenery of the country and try the golden beaches of the sahel (mahdia/mestir/sousse)or nabeul
Tunisia is laid back, compact, underrated, a gem in plain sight. Tourists miss out by staying in cheap all-inclusive hotels. Watch youtubers, they have a much richer experience.
I used the trains a lot. Guests in Mahdia knew nothing of them. Traditional Tunisian towns not used to visitors, but they were rewarding. Cafes excellent and a good way to meet people. Learn French beforehand.
Thanks Tom! Hadn’t really considered Tunisia before but you’ve definitely opened my eyes to the possibility. The closed currency thing is weird … I wonder what the advantages are other than having to make fewer notes and coins than if they could be taken out of the country. 🤔
Local here! Tunis is just a big no for me. Even when I need to go there, I just feel suffocated the whole time, so please dont take it personally. I hope you enjoyed your stay here. We'd love to see again!!
Thank you Tom, you are a trail blazer for us. You have a very easy, 'listen to voice', very easy on the ear...We are here right now at Hammam Souse in our Sprinter offgrid Campervan, on our way to El Jem in an hour or so....What has struck us as so different so far, is the white powder sand here, absolutely fabulous, and so totally different from northern med shores. People are wonderful. A bit of begging, but heyho, we give, and they smile and lots of big thank you's. We are vanlifers, so a few things to find out, as only been here a week of our 3 month tour. We got around the closed currency with a local friend. He gave us cash dinar and we transfered euro into his Wise account from ours. Rate of the day, no commissions. We have our 'Wheely Living' youtube channel, reflecting our life over 4 years on the road. We are both in our 70's and loving every minute. Very best wishes to you.. :)
honestly I wouldnt recommend going to sfax. Bizerte, monastir, tunis ( marsa, carthage, centre ville, bardo) mahdia (jam), kariouan, djerba, are the best tourist places to visit. The thing I dislike about travel vloggers is that they only show the arabic side of the country
Very informative. Planning to go next spring. Want to go to Djerba as part of the trip. I can fly from Monastir or Tunis but alternatively is it worth going to Sfax for a day or two and then going to Djerba by train/bus from there. Thanks.
Monastir and Kairouan are very different cities Monastir is an almost western sea side city with a marina full of yachts. The connection between Sousse and Monastir is fast and easy with a train. Im under the impression when I was there that a lot of tourists go there Kairouan on the other hand can only be reached by bus ot minibus. Google map got me lost and in general Im under the impression not many wesern tourist go there by them selfs (at least if I judge how the locals sometimes looked at me with their friendly eyes) But yes if you go back to tunisia, they are worth a trip
You can be searched; more common is to be asked to open your wallet. My impression is that the less European you look the more skeptical customs are. But we were a small number of people so this is only an anecdote.
It’s a shame you didn’t go to Matmata while you were there. That’s where Luke Skywalker’s home was filmed in “Star Wars.” Everyone there lives underground. I got to go there in 1979, just two years after “Star Wars” came out so it was a great time to be there. But no one in the town seemed to know what a big hit the movie was. They weren’t selling any “Star Wars” related merchandise.
I found this format extremely useful and enjoyable (once I got beyond the mental jarring caused by lack of continuity in your shirt choices) but I would make one point ... airalo may work fine, but if you ever need help from their support centre, make sure you have HOURS to spare. I have waited literally 4 and a half hours 'on hold'. Not your concern really, but keep it in mind when recommending them.
That looks amazing! I was looking at ferries from Sicily when I was there but talked myself out of that side trip. I'd love to see those Carthage sites!
hey, thanks for this video. im going there in two weeks! i was wondering, if you read this, did they ask for your hotel info at the passport control in the airport? im staying with a friend and im worried that they'll deny my entry if i dont have a hotel reservation!
Okay so I’ll be going to Tunisia from Rome, however I’m flying from Rome and fly back to Rome the same day is this okay to do? What is the best way to get from Tunis to the city? I get in at 3 pm and my flight back is at 7 pm
This is a great informative vid .... u will have gone through security to get air side ... therefore logically u should not have the local currency .... doesnt make sense for the shops that side of security to take currency u will not have ...
Fun fact: Don't learn the Arabic numbers when coming to Tunisia. Even when talking Arabic a lot of people tell the numbers in French. Was confusing for me as I do not speak French (but Arabic - I am not Arab though) and I had to ask people to tell me the amount in Arabic.

Loved the video but there were some wrong things. As tunisians do love meat, tunisia also offers a lot of vegetarian options (vegan probably not). Couscous for example, the traditional national dish, is vegetarian. Also a LOT of europeans take the ferry from italy to tunis, so trust me, the police and everyone else has seen foreigners before lol. Most bring their cars to tunisia so taking the ferry is very common. Also as a woman, it is still very safe to visit the country. I've been visiting tunis every few months for 3 years now, either alone or with my mother, and not once did we have an uncomfortable situation. Going out at night is -as in any city worldwide- not the safest time to go out, but as long as anyone stays in areas with many people around there shouldnt be any problem. Took some lovely night walks in tunis' city center and thats definitely not possible in my european city that i live in. But also, your video has some good tips, especially with the e sim and the louage! Just a tip for anyone who wants to visit: bolt is amazing, but not for trips FROM the airport to the hotel. Didnt work for me as i couldnt find the taxi. What worked great for me was going upstairs (outside) where the taxis stop to bring people to the airport and just grab a taxi from there, waited less than a minute and it ended up being cheaper than a bolt 😊
Hm...what do you recommend people who don't have a smartphone? 😉Nice video as always. 🥰👍7:13 Coffee! 🥰 Next destination? Hm...how about Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego? 😊
u sure u went to my country ?, we speak english very well man it was just a convenience that u met ppl bad at the language nthn else, in fact tunisia is the most english speaking country in the al,maghrib al,araby 7:56
Where do you think the next destination on the channel is? 👀

Thanks for sharing this opinion. Good to know. I know Morocco quite well and yes, you are right it isn't very relaxing for tourists despite I love it.
They will allow you to enjoy the local food while respecting your dietary preferences :
1- Slata Mechouia : A grilled salad made from roasted peppers, tomatoes, onions, and garlic, then chopped and mixed with olive oil and spices. Just ask that they don't add tuna on top
2- Kafteji : A dish made from fried vegetables such as potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, and pumpkin, mixed together and served with bread. It has eggs though, I don't know whether you eat eggs or not
3- Shakshouka : A dish made with tomatoes, onions, and peppers, typically served with eggs poached on top.
4- Lablabi : A chickpea soup typically flavored with cumin, garlic, and olive oil, and often garnished with harissa
5- Couscous with Vegetables : Although couscous is often served with meat or fish, you can always ask for a vegetarian version
6- Omek Houria : a type of mashed carrot salad and it's super delicious
Thanks for the detail!

You should definitely visit :)
You're always welcome by Tunisians🥰🥰🥰🥰
As tu perdu la raison ?

Such a fantastic, informative video, thank you so much!
I'm from Tunisia and I find this video really helpful somehow😂 I really hope this won't be your last video about Tunisia. Visit us again! 😁

Thank you so much for the video. Good to know. I am planning going to Tunisia 2024.
This is a very useful guide . Thank you so much for adding all the links in the description! We are off to Tunisia in 6 days ,😊
How was it ? Can you share please ?
Bro this is an awesome review well done! You gave a lot of information important info I will need when I go there one day. Thank you ! ❤❤
That's good info, thanks for the addition!
I’m going in 2 weeks solo. Thanks for this
Did you visit, I'm looking a booking
Do u want a partner ?
BRO! THAT JAMES TAYLOR AND HIS ALL-STAR BAND TSHIRT IS SICK!
Hey, any advice on how to get such locals or guides? 😃
You need to visit Mahdia too. Arguably the most beautiful coastal town in Tunisia (in the summer preferably) 💙
Going there in December together with my husband and really looking forward to it 😍
Thx for the video Tom. I’m thinking of a trip to Tunisia to see where my grandad was in WWII and this really helped.
I hope you get to go there!
@@thornton thx Tom, looking to follow him on to Italy and then when he was a POW in germany…
There are quite a few allied war cemeteries in Tunisia you may be interested in. And may be you like to visit the War Museum of the Marith line (close to Marith on the P1 state route), although it takes a more German perspective.
@@hassanalihusseini1717 thanks, I need to do my research to see exactly where he was in Tunisia….
Everything is on point great job 👏
Awesome tips Tom !!
Thanks a lot for your helpful tips.
Thanks , I enjoyed your travels in Tunisia 😊!
Thanks heading there in 2 weeks for 10 days. Very useful.
Informative and very well done video!
I need some adventure than only being an average tourist.
hey alternate universe youtube Liam with the James Taylor tshirt artfully placed in the background.
You are welcome to visit again and come to my home town Hammamet and many other cities as u said (Kairouan, Monastir, Benzart, Mehdia....)
you said it all!

Great videos from this adventure, kiddo…
Brilliant video!! Great hints and tips!! Are you home now or are you travelling still? Hope all is well, take care
The places that u shouldn’t miss are Djerba, Kélibia, Ain Drahem/Tabarka, The Sahara, El Jem, the old city of Tunis, Sidi bou :)
Welcome again!
You are a compulsive Tunisian liar and a deceivers

Thanks Tom for yet again an insightful video, I would like to share an experience I had when I arrived at the Tunis airport late on a Friday evening a couple of months ago, It was difficult getting a taxi and later on I was informed by a local that taxis drivers are avoiding working late at night because they are often robbed, so therefore if possible it's best to avoid taking flights to Tunis arriving late
That's good info :) Thanks for the addition
Hello I’m going from Rome to Tunisia as a challenge to see if I can go to a different confident in less than a day. I’m going to the capital aka Tunis. So my flight would land at 3 pm and depart at 6:30-7:00 pm is that too late to get a taxi and what would be the other form of transportation to get to the airport?
Thank you so much Tom.🙂
What kind of budget do you need for a week in Tunesia (without flights to/from)?
Thanks for ur complement about my country, i would like to say, when u plan to go somewhere, just let ur funs know that, at list, they could help u to visit places nd be with u! U’re gonna feel safe either!! Try to visit next time Bizerte, Ain drahim nd Tabarka!! Widh the best for u !!
YES, Ain Draham, and the mountains of Kroumirie
That hummus has me droooooling 🤤
Even Hummus is not really Tunisian. 🙂

Great video. I’m going to Kosovo next month which I guess is also not very well known as a tourist destination.
Same thing in Morocco. Such a beautiful country, there was only 12 people on our tour. Intreipid
Hi can you make a video on what to travel
Thanks.
great information. Thanks
You should have come to a little island called kerknah
Next time!
Monastir and Kairouan are very different cities
Monastir is an almost western sea side city with a marina full of yachts. The connection between Sousse and Monastir is fast and easy with a train. Im under the impression when I was there that a lot of tourists go there
Kairouan on the other hand can only be reached by bus ot minibus. Google map got me lost and in general Im under the impression not many wesern tourist go there by them selfs (at least if I judge how the locals sometimes looked at me with their friendly eyes)
But yes if you go back to tunisia, they are worth a trip

About the physical money, do they frisk you when leaving the country again? What penalties would someone face if they get caught with some on them?
Good question! I was only asked, not properly searched.
You covered Tunisia Well! I have recently come back from Tunisia myself, I have some Tunisia videos on my page. Keep it up!
hey, thanks for this video. im going there in two weeks! i was wondering, if you read this, did they ask for your hotel info at the passport control in the airport? im staying with a friend and im worried that they'll deny my entry if i dont have a hotel reservation!
ohhh, i just got to that part of your video! so they did ask for hotel proof?
Okay so I’ll be going to Tunisia from Rome, however I’m flying from Rome and fly back to Rome the same day is this okay to do? What is the best way to get from Tunis to the city? I get in at 3 pm and my flight back is at 7 pm
You welcome
Add an atuvos, or even better a full on gps tracker to whatever you care for.
This is a great informative vid .... u will have gone through security to get air side ... therefore logically u should not have the local currency .... doesnt make sense for the shops that side of security to take currency u will not have ...
Tunisia is beautiful and welcoming btw the bardo museum second photo is from Algiers bardoo museum not Tunisia

Pretty accurate
Thanks for the extra info :)
And will immigration allow that, I’m a us citizen and I don’t think I’d need a visa
