Legends never die, Minnie's daughter Maya Rudolph was mentioning how her daughter will never get to spend time with her grandma, but with these clips, I would feel so proud and comforting to have a grandma to sing and look like that. What a great legacy for her grandchildren.
This is such an ode to love from an amazing talent, in a time of great change. This poetic, sensitive song expresses an innocent, sweet sense of 70s love. It's so vulnerable and expressive, yet strong at the same time...need more of this sweetness now!
And no one sings high notes so effortlessly and with feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeling like Minnie. Plus, unlike those who came after her, Minnie can enunciate even in her very highest registers. The incomparable unsurpassable Angel of Soul ❤
This song brings tears to my eyes too. Especially when she sings her daughter's name at the end, "Maya, Maya, Maya"..her daughter Maya Rudolph, a famous actress comedian now, but just a little girl back then.
OMG - thanks, Jennifer - I had NO idea that Maya Rudolph was Minnie's daughter - I love her -- One of my favorite roles is hers in "Idiocracy" (sadly, that seems now more realistic than satire) --

Born in 1947, Riperton grew up in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side. As a child, she studied music, drama and dance at Chicago's Abraham Lincoln Center.[7] In her teen years, she sang lead vocals for the Chicago-based girl group the Gems. Her early affiliation with the Chicago-based Chess Records afforded her the opportunity to sing backing vocals for various established artists such as Etta James, Fontella Bass, Ramsey Lewis, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters. While at Chess, Riperton also sang lead for the experimental rock/soul group Rotary Connection, from 1967 to 1971. On April 5, 1975, Riperton reached the apex of her career with her No. 1 single "Lovin' You". The single was the last release from her 1974 gold album titled Perfect Angel. In January 1976, Riperton was diagnosed with breast cancer, and in April, she underwent a radical mastectomy.[4][8] By the time of diagnosis, the cancer had metastasized and she was given about six months to live. Despite the grim prognosis, she continued recording and touring. She was one of the first celebrities to go public with a breast cancer diagnosis, but she did not disclose that she was terminally ill. In 1977, she became a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. In 1978, she received the American Cancer Society's Courage Award, which was presented to her at the White House by President Jimmy Carter. Riperton died of breast cancer on July 12, 1979, at the age of 31.

Illiness and Death: On August 24, 1976, Riperton revealed on The Tonight Show that she had undergone a mastectomy due to breast cancer.[4] At the time of her diagnosis, Riperton found out her cancer had already spread to the lymphatic system, and she was given about six months to live.[4] She continued touring in 1977 and 1978, and she became the national spokeswoman for the American Cancer Society's 1978-79 campaign.[4] During the recording of her final album, Minnie, her cancer progressed to the point that she was in a great deal of pain.[4] Extreme lymphedema immobilized her right arm in early 1979. In her final singing appearances on television (most notably on the Mike Douglas Show), her right arm remained in a fixed position during her performances.[4] Near her death, in concert, she changed the end of "Lovin' You", "Maya, Maya, Maya" to "Maya, Maya, Ringo, Maya." Ringo was her nickname for her son, Marc. By mid-June, Riperton was confined to bed. She entered Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on July 10. On Thursday, July 12 at 10:00 am, she died in the arms of her husband. That Sunday, following a funeral service attended by more than five hundred mourners, Riperton was interred in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles. Her epitaph is the opening line of her most famous song: "Lovin' you is easy 'cause you're beautiful".
Thankful for telling Minnie’s Journey. I knew she suffered and was heartbroken 💔 when she died 😢. I used to listen to this album first thing in the morning to make my day beautiful. The only thing I can think of when it comes to Minnie, is God needed that AMAZING angelic voice in heaven with him!! The Queen of the whistle register!! ❤️
Went to my first concert to see Seals and Croft in 1975. (Check out Diamond Girl, We May Never Pass This Way Again) Minnie Ripperton opened for them. I'd seen her on tv and liked this song. So I pictured her coming out with a white gown and a wreath of flowers on her head like Mother Nature. And she did. Sang this song first. Then out of nowhere, she and her band cut loose with a series of R&B jam session type songs that blew me and my friends away.
Oh I hope Maya Rudolph sees this reaction. I’m sure it would make her heart smile to see that there are still new people learning about the greatness that was her mother.
I was a dancer on Soul Train when that song came out. I was standing just below her. She was effortless hitting those high notes. I was amazed with her voice. You could feel her beautiful sweet spirit. Beautiful simply beautiful!
She had an 8 octave range. Another track she did was "Baby let's stick together" or something like that. It was released after she died in the late 70's aged 31
Believe it or not, her LIVE version on The Midnight Special is even more mind-blowing...she hits HIGHER notes!!!! I don't think Shawn could take it!!! Only Minnie can bring tears to a brother's eyes. Ain't no shame in it!!!
Minnie was an angelic treasure who loved her husband(playing guitar, Richard Rudolph) and kids more than life itself. Mother Nature herself... She did a few albums also cause she passed of cancer in 1979...a loss...RIP Thanks for reacting to her.
Minnie Riperton on the video is why I clicked on this one. Of all the great vocalists, she has made a place for herself in my memory. She will never be forgotten.
Queen queen of the whistle. This was such a beautiful song she made for her beautiful daughter. Minnie was taken too early. We still needed much more great music like this from her.
I was honored to see her live at the Spectrum in Philadelphia in 74. I have to say she hit that note live just like in the video. She was amazing, and I cried then just like I cry every time I hear this again.

This was a beautiful reaction! Shawn, you are ALL man! The depth of your love for Mel is so evident!☮💜
An angelic voice that was taken from us far too soon.
Makes me cry everytime i hear it.
She had the voice of an angel.
So sweet.
Thanks for reacting to this song, it's awesome!
Beautiful voice, love this song!
Queen queen of the whistle. This was such a beautiful song she made for her beautiful daughter. Minnie was taken too early. We still needed much more great music like this from her.
She makes all us feel that way . She has a great collection. Her voice is legendary
I was honored to see her live at the Spectrum in Philadelphia in 74. I have to say she hit that note live just like in the video. She was amazing, and I cried then just like I cry every time I hear this again.
Her high pitch voice gave me goosebumps all over. Yes it her sweet voice touches your soul. 👏👏👏👏🙏❤❤❤❤👍🥰😘
I love how you guys get these songs! As a teenager in the 70s these songs drove us, shaped us, caressed us! I love your channel!
She was my favorite singer and I cried when she passed away; I also cried for her young family that she loved so much. I was in my teens, I still cry when I hear her songs to this day in my 50’s. Much love to you two!
Minnie ... Gone way to soon. Such a beautiful strong voice. Can't help but get emotional during this song.
