The one thing to remember about 60s music is that each song (and voice) are unique, very unlike music from today. Many artists can be identified in one note because they are so unique. Love your reaction videos!
I was in high school when this came out and it was sooo romantic to me, it just swept my heart away. It's wonderful to hear it again and see your reaction. Thank you!
You picked a winner here guys. In 1969 Eddie recorded and released his own version of the song and it charted in the United States in 1970 at #2. Another soul group worth listening to is the Philly soul sound of the DELFONICS.
You have to react to his live version back in 2012. This came out back in 1969 when I was a 14-year-old freshman in high school. He blew everyone out of the water with his very high voice. And 43 years later in 2012 at an oldies concert in New Jersey...He was still hitting those high notes. Now that I am 69-year-old senior citizen, the song still rocks me to my core. Awesome!
Eddie paved the way for soul groups in the 70s that featured falsetto lead singers-the Sylistics (You are everything, Break Up to Make Up) and Blue Magic (Sideshow, three ring Circus) to name a few.
This song was originally done by Ruby & The Romantics in 1963 as "Hey There Lonely Boy". Eddie Holman did it in 1970 & switched the gender to "Hey There Lonely Girl". Both versions were hits.
I was 9 when I first heard this song. And, out of all the great songs of the 60s, this was my favorite. Then PBS had a Music Special around 2013. Of all the best songs done by the original artists, Eddie Holman took the stage and sang this song. Everybody's jaw dropped when he sounded the same as he did in 1969. Now that's a singer !
I love you both for the response to this song its been a favorite song of mine since I was 17 years old. Even though it came out when I was a baby . Thank you for sharing this song and the same experience I had when I first heard this amazing song.
Whoever I knew listening to this couldn't believe his voice in 70. I assure you NO ONE could ever duplicate his voice. Ahahaha 😀. Love this song. He was on a PBS music show not too long ago sounds the same!
Eddie's falsetto voice is absolutely dreamy. Nearly every Soul/ R&B group had a falsetto. Philip Bailey of Earth Wind and Fire has one of the best.Check out Devition, Reasons, His solo I know and Trapped. Also go way back to Ted Taylor Be Ever Wonderful 1963 version.
Songfact: Eddie didn't want to record this song, but did so after being pressured by his wife, who was also his producer. This was Holman's only Top 40 hit. He switched styles and moved to his own gospel label as this was climbing the charts. I love this song to pieces. Such a great, great voice!!!!!!
Yes he did, I was watching when they first aired it, one if the best live performances I’ve ever seen, he still sounded exactly the same ! They were on there feet! Standing ovation!
I love it when you young-uns (LOL! I'm 67) latch onto these songs, make them your own and react the same way we reacted when we first heard them. Sho' you right!
Magical right? This is the music my generation first slow danced to. I send love to Motown and African American ❤❤❤❤❤R&B ftom this era. Please bring these voices back!!!!
My cousin had the 45 and we would sit around and play cards listening to records and I absolutely loved loved this song. The 60s and 70s flew past me but I remember all of the songs. I am so glad to be sharing my music with a different generation. It makes my heart fell good to see you acting the way I did... chills and all.
He was eventually known as the reverend Eddie Holman...He could hit those beautiful high notes over 40 years after this song came out in 1970...excellent reaction, guys...great stuff...
I just seen this on PBS television. Seen it when it first aired too. I grew up listening to this song and it made me cry listening again. I find out later you guys did the reaction on it a year ago. Smh. I missed it. Dang. I'll watch tonight. He was great!!!
I was 7-8 years old when this song was a hit (came out late in 1969 and charted through early 1970) and his voice blew me away then. Nice to see y'all reacting to this song. Brings me way back.
Yes, Yes ,Yes guys. You got a real one here.I bought this 45 with my last 50 cents as a teenager and wore it out.Still love this song at age 66.Great slow dance song. Loved your reaction.
Same age 66 and fell in love with this song too, our neighborhood record shop charged a dollar for 45's. 50 cents was a a lot of money for us back then, can you imagine trying save up for a dollar. I should have known where your record shop was LOL.
I was 18 in 1969 when this beautiful song came out. It hit #2 on the 'hot 100' billboard chart. Can't remember what beat it as #1- it was Sly and the Family Stone at number 1. Loved your reaction, it made me laugh. Good to see young people enjoying "my music", lol. Glad I lived at a time with probably the best music in history (IMO), REAL music, not auto tune back then.
Sean and Mel thank you for reacting to this song I had not heard it in such a long time I love your reactions man priceless keep it up and here are some suggestions kind of like this song. Sweet baby by George Duke, Kiss and say Goodbye by the Manhattans, You make me feel brand new and Stone cold in love with you both songs by the stylistics.
One of my favorites from that era. Just a lovely voice and a sweet, lovely sentiment. Try Mel Carter doing "Hold Me, Kiss Me, Thrill Me", Tommy Edwards doing "All In The Game", Smokey Robinson doing "Ooh Baby Baby", and of course, Sam Cooke doing "You Send Me". For Sam, try the live black and white version from the old American Bandstand with Dick Clarke.
If you're thinking about doing It's All In The Game, it has an amazing piece of trivia attached to it: the melody was written in 1911 by Charles Dawes, who was Vice President of the U.S. under Calvin Coolidge and a Nobel Peace Prize winner! Dawes grew to hate the melody because it was the first thing everybody wanted to talk about to him -- not being Vice President, a Nobel winner, or any of his other accomplishments.
A lot of not well remember but wonderful songs from the late 60’s - early 70’s with this style. Check out The Stylistics - I’m Stone in Love with You; Oh Girl & Have You Seen Her by The Chi-Lites; Kiss and Say Goodbye & Shining Star by The Manhattans; Love on a Two-Street by The Moments. And there’s so many more!
Now your talking, they have no idea how their minds will be blown. This is the tip of the ice burg. Add to that “what’s Come Over Me - Blue Magic, The delphonics didn’t I Blow Your Mind, La La La Means I Love you, Natural High - Bloodstone, OMG they can spend weeks going through those Soul groups of the early seventies.
Shawn and Mel, I have been enjoying reaction videos for about a year now, and I would like to compliment the two of you for the fabulous content that you have on your channel. While most reactors seem to all use the same songs within days or weeks of each other, you folks treat us to an amazing variety of musical styles, eras and genres that simply is not found on other channels. From the Fabulous 50s to the soulful 60s, disco 70s and more....the variety and quality of your selections is head and shoulders above most of the folks who are doing reactions. Thank you so much for entertaining us with your great taste in music!
I love you two! Yes, it was different back then, it wasn't an issue to be ridiculously vulnerable and show ultimate respect. Lord have mercy we need that back...NOW!!
I fell in love with this song when "I" was a younger lonely girl! Unfortunately, I never found "My" lonely boy! I'm so happy that you two found and still have that love!! ❤❤
52 years later I still love the song. Was a big hit in 70. There will only be one Eddy Holman. Minnie Ripperton, Janis Joplin and Joe Cocker, the mold is broken!!!
LOVE It...so glad you guys are digging into some of the old soul classics, your reactions are making my day ...keep digging you will absolutely love it.
The old skool r and b hit different. No disrespect to any other beautiful genres but funk and r and b set a mood like no other music on the planet. Kept a baby in a belly.f
If u like this style, may I recommend, The Stylistics and there big hit "You are everything". Also were you guys holding hands? you guys are very lovey dovey, which is lovely to see 😍 Once again love your selection/mix, perfect!
Man I haven't heard this song in a minute...Eddie did his thing on this one.. I wish I could sing this like he did, but my voice doesn't go that high lol.. New Edition did this song back in the 80s with Ricky singing lead, and he did this song justice....this is a classic for sure
So glad you did this one. Takes me back to the dance halls of the 70's in London UK. This song was always one of the "slow" dances, and you'd dread your partner trying to sing along to Eddie in your ear 'ole - you can imagine how that sounded!!
The one thing to remember about 60s music is that each song (and voice) are unique, very unlike music from today. Many artists can be identified in one note because they are so unique. Love your reaction videos!
In the 60s we liked every kind of music.

Such a powerful song that still amazes me today. I was a young kid when this song came out. Very powerful voice!
I'm 70 and I still love this song and still know all the words 😊❤

Thanks! Just listened! Then other vids came up in 2014 & 2016... still goin' strong! Wow!
Yes it was.👍
yes...... just listened to the 2012 version.... still amazing...❤️❤️... and NO auto tune...
@@mariainman3618 You are absolutely right. He was still awesome.
Eddie's stupendous live performance....th-cam.com/video/SDRt-j6-C2w/w-d-xo.html
Eddie paved the way for soul groups in the 70s that featured falsetto lead singers-the Sylistics (You are everything, Break Up to Make Up) and Blue Magic (Sideshow, three ring Circus) to name a few.
I loved all those groups. That was real music back then.
Stylistics were my favorite R&B band .. Eddie Kendricks was also a great high voice singer
Silly me I thought it was Ray Charles, that paved the path, but he was rhythm and Blues!
Don’t forget the Chi-Lites, You Make Me Feel Brand New(I think that’s them)The Stylistics, Blue Magic, all of them. Pure 70’s Soul.
The 70s were filled with so much romance music. So many sweet memories!!
i was 12 when this song popped up, i was mesmerised then as now.
This song was originally done by Ruby & The Romantics in 1963 as "Hey There Lonely Boy". Eddie Holman did it in 1970 & switched the gender to "Hey There Lonely Girl". Both versions were hits.
Love that 1963 version.
I personally like the Ruby & the Romantics version better.
Check out Ruby and The Romantics, Our Day Will Come. Beautiful song sung by beautiful voices.
@@ladycharliestallworth2280 That's a great song by them from 1963.
I have never heard Hey there lonely boy, got to go and look it up and listen to it. Thanks for the info.
OMG Sweet Memories!!!
One of the greatest vocal performances I’ve ever heard. If you can’t feel soul when listening to this….well then you have no soul.
He still sings this and it sounds just as good if not better!! Find a video of him doing this live. You'll love it.
I have ... you are absolutely correct ... seeing him live is stunning .........
I grew up listening to this kind of music in San Francisco, in the 60,s, L still have alot 45's and L P albums, great music...👍😷

The lights go down, you walk across the floor & there she is.And no longer is she a lonely girl it's pure magic
Eddie Holman brings tears to my eyes mostly because of his beautiful voice and then because of the lyrics. I can empathize with her.

That is funny wait till they hear Phillip Bailey and Ted Mills of Blue Magic, Harry Ray, to name a few.
Oh here’s one no one thinks of that will knock them out - Natural High by Bloodstone

This is Philly! with uncredited musicians who became the magical MFSB a couple of years later.
