    compress with reckless abandonment, that's the best description of parallel compression I've heard.

    Awesome Drew. One problem you have that most of us don't - the sound of thousands of people singing along in the overheads. :)

    Great idea with that exact distance snare to OH. (matching yes, but not exact distance) I haven't tried that specifically but I will now! Thanks for that.

    Another great episode! Can't wait for the next one. I may be stealing some of your settings for my drums this week!

    Whoah! Measuring the OH mics from the snare by Frequency is SUPER NERDY. I love it !

      Check out Chris Mitchell, He also is a great scientist engineer type. Mixes for Umphree's MaGee, not the right spelling. He is trying to achieve a no eq mix.

    Drew, sick vid! As an SQ user, this helps a lot. I've been doing my parallel compression directly on the channel- but I'll try your way (really the traditional way) of doing it!

    this is awsome Drew! but please tel me, regrading the groups does the drum group contains also the duplicate compresed channles, or you have them only in the drumpc?

    Thanks for very useful tips in this series,My noob question is for Drums FX we should send from each close mic or from group? also how about OH mics?

    Hey Drew, a bit of topic post..how did you route your kick parallel and snare parallel from the computer..i bet you are using dante or soundgrid virtual soundcheck but i can't manage to route and duplicate my own tracks.. I have them..but not duplicated..because i don't know how to do it

    Hai Drew!! Great drums sound!! Why you don’t use a same compressor for your parallel drums??? Thanks Drew...

    Combining this video with your internal channel alignment video, I was curious if you do any drum time alignment to the overheads? As you showed, you have the distance from the snare to the overheads measured, so if you were to delay the snare close mic by 54 inches (approx 4 ms), the two overhead mics and snare mic would be sending the snare signal to the speakers at the same time. Then obviously repeat for the other drums relative to the overheads.

    This is truly great! Thanks for sharing this with all of us. One question, is the 250hz distance based on the fundemental frequency of the snare or just what sounds best?

    • @asumoftwobusses6304
      @asumoftwobusses6304  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A little of both! I was trying to think of what center frequency I was cutting in my close mics, and what frequency would add fullness to the snares and the toms

    Thank you for these videos greatly appreciate them.
    I just want to know as to how did you come to using only the beta91A only on the kick ?

    • @asumoftwobusses6304
      @asumoftwobusses6304  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sinekaya Mbasan well we have so much low end in the show, and when there are lots of 808s in the show, I got used to keeping one source of a kick and the lean-ness of just a 91a works well when drums aren’t necessarily the focal point of the mix

    Why compression before eq?

    • @asumoftwobusses6304
      @asumoftwobusses6304  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      George Thompson I’ve always felt like compressing the signal first to tonality shape the sound. Then exaggerate it with eq after the dynamics are sorted. Also, it allows more freedoms to play with eq in the mix without changing your compression because of the order.

    • @SteveInTheMix
      @SteveInTheMix 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey George, if you don't' mind me jumping in... Many engineers like to put EQ before compression because you can get a compressor to tame a harsh or pushed frequency or you can eq something to be more aggressive but then the compressor will sort of put a seatbelt on it. For example, try making a snare brighter than you think you want it then drive that into a compressor. It will tent to present as still brighter but not as abrasive. You'll find the sound is different than the comp first and then not eq'ing as much brightness on that same snare. Both ways work, just depends on each situation.
