- I went to E3 2019 and got to do some really cool things while I was there. We got to play Iceborne ahead of release, I saw Cyberpunk 2077 behind closed doors, we got to play the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and, probably my favorite: I got to go and see Elon Musk and Todd Howard in a dual interview with Geoff Keely (you know, that guy from the game awards who looks like a walking talking stalk of asparagus with terrible eye contact). It was bizarre and weird and just something you don’t see every day. It was just as fascinating as you would have expected, but something struck me as odd, sitting there in the audience just 20 or so feet from God Howard and our lord and savior, Elon.

Yeah, only studied, didnt get a degree or anything. I took a class in TV production which doesn't add up to much but by saying "I studied Television Production in college!" Making it sound like I'm majoring in it.

Not necessarily. I'd argue some individuals study business at University only to find out they'd gone into debt for a return they already possess. They cut losses and utilise any liquidity remaining to them to finance their idea.
Although, usually if someone's put into the position of declaring business acumen there's an inference of its scant display.
This video is honestly terrible. The Anthem dev was WAY more sincere and trustworthy. Todd switching the question around makes it seem untrustworthy. You are looking way to into people.

Definitely. The Anthem person used no condescending tone (how the f did Luke hear such a thing in his voice?), and he was actually nervous and feeling vulnerable and spoke with some humility. The Anthem producer acknowledged there were faults and took responsibility, whereas Todd, without skill or grace, simply ignored the question and talked vainly about Bethesda's fans, and it was painful to watch. Todd was condescending, he was pompous, he was disingenuous, and he made no effort to hide the fact that he was avoiding the question he was asked.
Also, when Todd mentioned he pressed the button to buy a Tesla with the Ultra loadout, there is no indication in the video clip that it was a brag. He simply says that's what he did while making a joke reference to PC game Ultra editions. There is no brag there. And it's no secret to anyone who knows who Todd is that Todd could easily buy himself 50 "ultra" Teslas if he wanted to.
Everything that Luke says in this video is the complete opposite of what is shown in the video clips. I'm wondering wtf is going on because this video is ridiculous and opposite of reality. I say that as a fierce critic of Bethesda and a critic of Todd.
Todd has already won the game so now he's opting for a bad guy playthrough and as a guy with maxed charisma and intelligence this may not end well for us...

This video didn't feel like it came to any conclusions. It was kinda all over the place and didn't feel like a video essay, more like unedited thoughts that strayed from whatever your main point was. Which after watching the video I still don't know what your point was.
I thought maybe you were going to talk about his body language, pysche, buisness practices or any number of things that would prove something "seems off" about him, but the only point you had was his supposed flexing when all he said was he bought an expensive Tesla and the fact that he was wearing expensive clothing.
In all honestly you were complimenting him way more than you were trying to deconstruct the reasons why he seems off. I also don't see the point in using a clip of someone you say is giving a worse interview than Todd as an example when the title of the video is "Something seems off with Todd Howard". The video had literally no conclusion. Based on the title, I was expecting a deconstruction of his behavior during the interview, which in reality was kinda odd btw. If anything, it's admirable that they are still actively communicating with the community of a pretty much dead game.
I'm not defending the game, but I'm sure he would have rather been anywhere but on camera at E3. And his behavior was consistent with just being uncomfortable, not malicious.
@@Kintaku If they have abandoned it instead then it could've very well been the end for their company. Their bosses told them to recoup as much of the losses they have incurred making this mess as possible and that is what they are doing. They are working on improving the game because they need the player base to spend enough on micro-transactions that they will get off the hook and for that they need a good enough game that it will attract new players and bring back the lost ones.

My whole point is that Ben is uncomfortable in this situation and it's completely understandable. It doesn't matter how or why he's in the situation. What matters is that he is exhibiting the behavior of a nervous human. It didn't seem like he was lying, it seemed like he didn't know what to say but was trying to stay positive.

Both of them responded with ultimately the same corporate PR bullshit lingo of weakly acknowledge the negative then pivot. Todd chose to pivot to an un-measurable(no way to prove him wrong) metric of "best online communities that we've ever seen." Bioware guy pivoted to listening more to player feedback. Both basically pivoting to a fanbase pander.
I'd argue you're showing a bias for Todd by saying his was masterful. Nothing wrong with bias. We all have them. Just from someone like me who is indifferent to both games they both sounded the same. Neither was masterful - both very standard.
Yeah, they both sounded the same to me as well. It's the usual "lessons were learned" spiel we usually get. Some of our politicians here in the UK use the same tactic as well.
And it's so easy for a good interviewer (and every other person) to work around it ("No TODD, I meant Fallout76. What about that, TODD!?").
It only works because Keighley is part of the business tactics but not a good journalist.
Agreed they both essentially meant the same thing but, be it Bias (I had no idea who that Bioware guy was) or maybe Todd really does have quite the silver tongue. Todd's version felt more.... sincere?(for lack of a better term)
Honestly though my biggest gripe with Todd Howard and Pete Hines is they always make a joke out of community backlash and complaints, while also praising us that we are the greatest community out there it just feels so backhanded. Are we a JOKE to you Todd!? are our legitimate concerns a joke!
At any rate I still like Todd as a face of the company, he is a great public speaker (and snake oil sales person) but god damn he has lost a lot of respect otherwise. Won't be getting any future Bethesda titles day one anymore, honestly that was a decision based on FO4, I didn't really care about FO76 beyond the initial hype before finding out it was Multiplayer. I'll wait at least a few months or for a price drop.
Bioware is under the mercy of EAs shitty decisions though and I'd usually support Bethesda's actions up until... Fallout 3... With the exception of allowing obsidian to develop fallout new vegas.

I was literally going to comment this same thing. I was baffled by this video's conclusions and assumptions. Todd's response was completely see through, where as Anthem's rep was a humbled response.
I’m glad to see I’m not the minority on this thought. The anthem dev demonstrated a sense of awareness for the community and what they desire, as with Todd’s response it felt more like a blanket statement handing out “we really appreciate our fans” without actually giving back to them. Understanding what your community wants is vital, and while it’s impossible to satisfy everyone, you should at least keep your ears open to suggestions from your supporters.

Todd is the Vince Russo of video games. Wrestling fans will know what I'm talking about. Both men weaseled themselves into a position of prominence after inflating their own involvement in past successes, only to quickly reveal a complete lack of competence before spearheading their respective companies into a nosedive.

Mostly just to state that if the case Luke is making is true, then Todd Howard is a modern gaming example of who not to be when wealth gets intertwined with your art.

That hes changed, he has gone from being a game designer with great quality games under his name who put games and gamers first, money second, now he got a taste of the money, he puts money far ahead of games and only cares about gamers' wallets and it shows in the games lately (microtransaction store worked perfectly in FO76 before anything else did, he wishes they could monetize skyrim more than just re-releasing it on everything, talking about the expensive Tesla, his expensive clothes, etc.) this is the same guy who was a lead developer of morrowind, arguably one of the best RPGs out there, and now he seems like a shell of the man he used to be, a sellout who changed because he got a taste of money.

All i know when fallout 76 came out all the bethesda executives turned off their social media. They knew what was gonna happen before it came out and they released it anyways pushing the preorders and taking it off steam so you cant get a refund.

Yep not everything Bethesda does have to do with Todd's choices. Todd is only head of Bethesda Game Studios and not Bethesda Softworks or Zenimax, the parent company. You are confusing fixing bugs within your engine on iterative releases of said engine and making a new engine. Studios don't tend to create a completely new engine anymore and use their existing engines with upgrades, which is what Bethesda has been doing. The issue is that while others fix their shit (Source, Unreal, etc) with each iterative release Bethesda has opted to not do that while tacking more bells and whistles on top of the bug riddled engine.

This whole video starts with a weird assumption: that you know Todd Howard, or what he's supposed to like, because he has previously made some games people have loved. That him being a snake oil salesman for his company is somehow out of character for him just because the games are now being less well received. There was plenty of bullshit surrounding Oblivion too, it's just that a lot of people liked that game. Nothing has changed here except Todd is having his damage control skills tested and is learning how to deflect criticism, as well he must if he wants Bethesda's reputation to survive until their next game.
