A good Tom Collins should taste very close to a sweet lemonade, which is why it's easy to become completely smashed by drinking them.
I didn't know that! I love lemonade and am not a big or knowledgeable drinker, so my future vacation drinking thanks you 😂
@@tashav7737 Just think of lemonade with a kick. It's mixed using soda water, so it's lightly carbonated. This drink was always my weakness, because I drank them too fast.
Ingredients:
Shot of Gin
Carbonated water
Sugar or syrup
Lemon juice
Mixed on ice in a Collins glass.
One could easily buy a liter of lemonade, pour it in a Collins glass with ice, and add a shot of gin.
It absolutely shouldn’t. If you can’t taste the gin then you’ve made it wrong. Gin should be the first thing you taste, and then it should taste of homemade lemonade.
I use extra dry gin for a Tom collins, some people use the slue gin which I don’t think tastes near as good.
I always order a Vodka Collins instead of the regular Tom Collins
I’m genuinely surprised all of them (especially Ciara) had never heard of a Tom Collins before.
I'm glad that Clare & Ciara are back in a video together. They are THE ultimate 'Try Channel' duo. Also, they're friendship goals
Tall glass REQUIRED for Tom Collins!
When it said histories most famous cocktails, I immediately thought of classic cocktails like an Old Fashioned, a Harvey Wallbanger, a Rusty Nail, a Gimlet, A Pearl Harbour, a Side Car, A Tom Collins, A Singapore Sling, a Tequila Sunrise, a Cuba Libre, and a Rob Roy.
You know, I remember going to bars and restaurants that had HUGE drink menus with many, many drinks like you listed, but back in the day. I don't see that huge variety anymore.
Late 90s Claim Jumpers (SoCal) spoiled me.
When I was a kid in the 1960’s my parents threw parties all the time, I remember Tom Collin’s and Whiskey Sour being the most popular.
Same with me, as well as Manhattans, cherry kijafa, and Singapore slings. Drinks so simple that we children could easily make them.
I never liked alcohol, but those parties were where I learned to love virgin Tom Collinses with maraschino cherries. Yum!
Our parents knew how to party. I remember parties all the time, for most holidays, that were huge events with dozens of people and a kitchen full of bottles of booze being consumed. As a kid I remember waking up early in the mornings after the parties and there would be people sleeping in various places. This was in the early and middle 80s.
What happened to us?
@@spook75a28: That was happening in the 1960’s, too.
@@EastSider48215 I am aware, as my siblings are 10 and 12 years older, and they talk about the RAGERS my parents used to have. I'm talking about people getting naked in pools while getting hammered drunk and probably a bit high. My mother was born in 1942, and let me say, those folks partied HARD, which they probably learned from their fathers that had returned from WW2.
You know, that actually explains a lot. I bet those WW2 vets drank hard and partied hard, and that was passed to the kids that they returned home to. Yeah, those kids born between the Greatest gen, and the Boomers were an odd lot.
"When Armstrong and Aldrin landed on Earth". HEY. You forgot the man who drove the ship. Gene Cernan. Without him, Armstrong and Aldrin would never have landed back on Earth.
I found it amusing that you served the Tom Collins in a rocks glass, instead of the glass that is actually named for the drink. There is a tall thin glass, the Collins glass, specifically designed for the drink.
A Tom Collins should be served in a Collins glass, which is taller and slimmer than a tumbler or highball glass. Also, it should be lemon juice forward (and made with sweet gin rather than dry gin, but sweet gin is almost impossible to find).
It should taste like lemonade, or very close to it when following a bartender's book recipe. I used to make it here through the summer. I always used Beefeater's, as you can't find anything but dry gin.
Serve it to me in any glass you want. They're great!
@@dirtyfiendswithneedles3111 Thanks for asking! No.
I said the same thing about the glass, before I saw your post.
For the people asking for a sweet (or "Old Tom") gin: the only one I know of commercially available is Barr Hill. A lot of small distilleries have made limited runs of sweet gin, but it's not popular enough for commercial viability.
7:51 Seamus brilliant line there 29 minutes past six o'clock. Well done!
You have managed to make me equally thirsty for the creation stories of cocktails, history nut that I am. I wish Ciara would resume her cocktail-making. Really enjoyed her videos and miss them now that they're gone.
On a hot day, a Tom Collins is so refreshing! Has to have a maraschino cherry garnish.
I enjoy learning the history of the food and drinks the TRYERS try. Colin and Sean are great at the history lessons 😊
I love when you Irish folk say "fillum" when pronouncing "film". (not taking the piss, being genuine when I say that)
Yes! 😅
I love watching you guys, but I must say; a Tom Collins is quite refreshing when properly made. For starters - I have NEVER been served a Tom Collins without 1-2 maraschino cherries skewered in it. It does affect the flavor and savor of the thing.
The Moon walk Cocktail: Grapefruit juice, Grand Marnier, Cordon Rouge Champagne, and Rose water in an ice-filled shaker according to the hotel where they drank it.
Aldrin cites the isolation he felt after getting back from the moon and his own predispositions to addiction as factors in his alcoholism. Buzz Aldrin's alcoholism became all-consuming in the 70's, but he sought help from rehab professionals to get sober.
Can you imagine being part of a team and making life and death decisions on the fly and after it's over you're on you're own? No more team, no more structure. Probably something similar to what vets go through after service. It would make any one drink. Trouble is, it doesn't solve your problems. But it is great for forgetting them for a while. Glad he eventually got help. Buzz is the only one of the three still sucking air. Damn those guys were brave. I was six years old and saw it with my Pop on 19" Black & White TV on a hot Summer day in Chicago. It was a different world.
Back in my earlier days as a barkeep, my clientele loved those Tom Collins.
I can't believe you guys don't know the Tom Collins drink. I was essentially the first cocktail I ever had back in the summer of 1978 and was around long before I drank as my Mom liked them. That's the world for ya!
I love when Nichole was told that the Moon Landing drink had champaign in it and she got supper girly!
Did Michael Collins get a Moon Landing too or just a good swift kick in the balls?
I can see Neil and Buzz finishing their drinks and then stepping over the poor suffering bastard.
*champagne
Lol yeah I always screw up spelling it!@@rapheAltoid77
Ciara did the Suffering Bastard in her channel back when she was doing drinks…. At least she had to have otherwise I AM SO SMART! I knew it was a hangover cure! I’ll give the credit to Ciara though. This was fun. Nice job guys! Are we EVER seeing Kellie again??? ❤
I keep asking about Kellie :(
Nichole's look for the shoot is a stunner. She is usually a standout, but the blouse this time adds a multicolor splash.
From the look on the faces, the 1789 has a hint of the Reign of Terror (on the tastebuds) and Jacobin bitterness.
In high school, my senior class had a "tom Collins " bit going on. We made up a person, enrolled him, even had a class schedule. Just to blame him for nearly everything 😂😂! We got interviewed by a local news station about our thoughts/feelings upon graduation and some one mentioned him ; everyone laughed and the reporter stopped the filming. After we explained why we were laughing, she wanted to "do another take" !! It didn't really work out though because it then seemed like forced laughter (duh, we weren't actors) . The aired piece was a flop!! That was 40 years ago and I've forgotten the name we made up!lol 😂😂😂
Tom Collins is a classic summertime drink--in a tall glass---and really good--not bland. Maybe a bad batch??
It depends on the gin. I personally make mine with Bombay Sapphire.
Made poorly I think. Not enough lemon, and probably not great gin
Tom Collins is one of my favorite drinks. Mixed well it's like drinking lemonade in the woods, the juniper gives you a nice pine smell. Best of all, it's basically just lemonade with gin in it, so you're staying hydrated.
"It's like a drink you'd get in college..."
"...Mmm, yes, shite!"
Died, absolutely great!
I love Seamus Stackpoole. He is the funniest of all. I always look forward to seeing him here .
Tbh, I'd try all of these.
I don't know if anybody's noticed this yet, but Archie McPhee has some new weird flavors of candy canes out including sour cream and onion, gravy, "Dante's Inferno", and the one Im really excited for, POSSUM flavor. Yes, POSSUM. Lets get crackin Try Channel!
A Tom Collins also needs to be stirred right before drinking , to get all the fluids mixed properly.. otherwise you get this...and with the right glass off course..😉😁
Love how everyone hates the one drink and Ciarra loves it😂😂😂
I remain convinced that Ciara could drink diesel fuel and be like "oh, it's a bit smoky!". 😂
Classic Ciara.
I think she likes every drink in every alcohol video 🤣
the funniest for me was during their "strongest cocktails" video or whatever, when it was up to 95% alcohol-based drink and she was "um, tasty"
Ciara rocking the Try merch! I see you!
The face they made for 1789 is pretty much how the revolution turned out for tge next 30 years lol
Fun fact: The astronauts returning from the moon were made to clear customs when they got back.
Well, that's an interesting way to celebrate #StNicholasDay! It's also #GazpachoDay (cold Mexican soup) & #PfeffernusseDay (German gingerbread). So, Sweet & Spicy Celebrations! Then, don't forget the first day of #Hanukkah tomorrow, with its jelly-filled Donuts. Awesome Advancing #Advent, Guys, and Delightful December...
Technically it starts at sundown tonight.
Would love to see a video of them AFTER all of the drinks! 30- an hour later when they are drunk drunk
The "bad bitches" took one sip and were no longer so bad. 😂
1969 at Trader Vics, Plaza Hotel N.Y.C, my introduction to the Suffering B., the hangover, I still have.
This has deepened my mistrust of the French 😂
You should've heard the exaltation from me when Colin said it was a drink inspired by the French Revolution because that's what I called it to be. Flippin' nailed it, boyo!
#historynerds
Seamus may know the Suffering Bastard from The Venture Bros. It's referenced in a flashback scene early on in the show.
As an American that switched their phone over to what we call "military time" last year, 29 minutes after 6 o'clock was absolutely BRILLIANT 😂
All the more impressive when you realize he had to do a bit of quick arithmetic ... while drinking! 😅
Love any new video from the Try channel but I will be absolutely devastated if there is not an advent calendar video very soon!
A good Tom Collins is fresh squeezed or muddled lemon and lime then the simple syrup, then the gin bit don't use trash gin use Hendricks or better, then soda water.
"It feels like a cocktail you get served at a college party"
"Oh yeah...shite." 😂😂
The Tall cocktail glass was known as a Tom Collins glass. You guys served it in a rock glass, you suffering bastards! lol
The funniest part of this episode is knowing that this was filmed at 9am... >3
Loved the pairings in this one
Great Video.
I have had a "Moon Walk".
I thought Tom Collins was either the bartenders name or the Gin from somewhere in the British Isles in the 17-1800?
I love Tom Collins cocktails,
And your videos.
🍸🍹
“Tickles you in all the right places “ is still cracking me up
Try'rs y'all rock! Love the channel and content. Peace
Fun to watch you guys, as always.
I love this channel. You are all a delight!
As always, you guys made my day 😊
A famous Swedish example - Dräparen.
It's not really a cocktail as such, but when suspected prime minister murderer Christer Pettersson was aquitted of the murder he was photographed with a bottle of Explorer and two bottles of Baileys, so it quickly became an 80's version of a meme to order this drink and call it "dräparen", which means something like "the killer" or "the slayer". If you google image search for the name you will quickly be able to tell which picture it is I'm talking about.
Clisare is a gem!
You guys always make me laugh. The world needs more of that. Thank you. ❤❤❤
Back in the 1960's we would substitute Slow Gin for Gin in the Tom Collins.
Sloe gin. It’s gin made with the fruit sloe.
Love you guys and gals, always cheer me up :)
Sure Aldrin and Armstrong had it but what about Michael Collins?! The man deserved a drink too
Thanks for the video all of you 🥃
Seamus saying “alcohol” is just so enjoyable
Tom Collins is my dad's favourite drink.
Cheers 🥂
There’s French whiskey ?! Every days a school day !
Inspiring as always ❤❤❤❤❤❤
My father would request an Irish Tom Collins on St Patrick's day, One of his GI buddies started it in WWII. Just add some Creme de menthe to the Tom Collins.
I love this. I was watching a Clare vlogmas video when this popped up.
Here is a blast from the past for you if you want historical drinks. Presbyterian was created in the late 1890's, the drink's named because the Presbyterian Church was founded in Scotland. Ingredients: 1 1/2 ounces whiskey, 2 ounces club soda, 2 ounces ginger ale, Lemon twist, for garnish. All that said I'm sure this is an oldie you guys would enjoy.
i love seeing clare and ciara together 🤍
Gotta love bartender humor, just imagine you're some poor bastard drifting into that town named Tom Collins and the crowd catches you...ah simpler times they were
I don't know why, but everyone saying no to the 1789 and Ciara saying I really like it cracked me up.
5 out of 6 are great, always great.. cocktails were neat too.. this was an interesting twist to the usual vid, Appreciated
No death in the afternoon? Too bad, but hey I'm not stopping you from making a part II.
How did none of them know what a Tom Collins was? That’s a very well known cocktail lol
Gin isn't super popular in Ireland.
I think Nicole is such a sweetheart
Now we all know they'll enjoy this shoot LMAO
I enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
9:00 whiskey senses tingling. 🤣you can see it on her face.
A Tom Collins is one of my favourite cocktails 😂
Vodka Collins with a a splash of grenadine and a maraschino cherry 😋
Same.
Is it me or the only reason I watch it for the drunk Irish people for their accent 😅
great video everyone!!!
When's the alcohol advent calendar coming out? I dont feel like its soon christmas without that video!
This was fun!
Seamus - Never disappoints !
We had one at a local bar called Whop Me Down Sweet Jesus that was awesome. It's basically all alcohol.
(7:25) I think you've misssed the target by choosing "white wine", since an apertif wine infused with gentian is specified. A couple of dashes of bitters might fix it.
Love a Suffering Bastard!! Tak’s, a bar in Yokosuka, Japan (right off base) specialized in The Bastard. It was especially tasty after a rugby match.
Give Ciara battery acid
"That's fabulous!! -Ciara😂😂😂😂
just drink water before going to bed after a night out of drinking and you won't get a hangover. LOL
Are y'all smackin the mint leafs? I can't remember where i learned it, but smacking the leaf between your hands opens the pores and releases the aromatics of the mint leafs. Showed the old lady she says Makes a world of difference experience wise. It definitely smells great
To learning! 🥂
0:11 No, Clare. He didn't drink before being assassinated. It was too early in the morning, and he was going out in public. He also had health issues so he drank very little alcohol, anyway.
I love all of you. I hope you have a Merry Christmas. But I miss the 24 drinks of Christmas 😢
i'd love to suggest a cocktail for them to try, but they snoop in here and it'd be a fun one, if they were surprised.
I'd love to have a drink with Seamus and Darren.
1789, the year Hamilton established the Treasury Department.
" cheers for being a bad bit@#, EEEWWWW" had me rolling. Thanks for all the laughs tryers!
was expecting some Historical drinks. Like Grog and Artilleryman's Punch
Clare AKA Clisare is so good on this channel ♥
Ooh, I want to try all of these cocktails! Do they make them at all the bars?
Yes, if they have the ingredients and you explain the recipe to the bartender. Just don't do so at any time when it is crowded and busy. Remember to tip the bartender a bit extra as unlike a Tom Collins, which is a State's bartender standard, the others are rarities. BTW, they may not even exist in the Mr. Boston Bartender's Guide, which most State's bartenders have.
How about a "clash of the drunkerds"? ROFL
Clisare, Ciara, and Darren all having to guess the NAME of a drink, as well as what is in it.
Kind of like a blind taste test. Lets finally see WHO IS THE BEST of the BEST when it comes to alcohol!!
You also have to remember, that in each country back then, there weren't many alcohols to choose from for drinks, especially during war times and economic down periods. So they had to use what was available to them.
