  • Authorities in Philadelphia arrested the alleged leader of a fentanyl ring as part of a crackdown on opioids in the city’s Kensington neighborhood. Sam Quinones, author of "The Least of Us," joins NewsNation host Elizabeth Vargas to discuss. "The longer people are on the street, the more chance they have of dying. ... We're starting to see jail as a place of recovery," Quinones says.

People have absolutely NO CLUE how easy it is to get drugs in jail and prison. I have a family member who is in and out all the time and she's a heroin addict. She has ZERO issues getting her H in jail or prison. S he says it's easier to find drugs IN than it is to find them OUT.

Anyone asking that question has lost touch with reality. The answer to that question is why it's such a mess
This is what you get when you punish addiction equally as selling it. Getting homeless is never a choice. Also a place to start asking questions. It's a disease first. But to understand this you need to have at least a functioning mental healthcare system. Good luck with that. Kind Regards, the rest of the world.

Liberals have proved that's not true. Some cities opened clinics to help them out. Yes, poverty and homelessness drives some people to start doing drugs. But not removing users of streets has made things worse.

Its not tough love. I am an Oregon licensed investigator. We cannot help our clients fight these addiction related cases when no sober facilities are currently available. With no available services for detox, no mandatory drug court help and slashed funding, it is horrible. Legallizing drug use meant canceling addicition services, no resources cosequences, accountability, and advocating from compassionate case managers.

I agree.if I wouldn’t have been pulled into an indictment in the 1990s, I would be dead now. All the people who were “fiends” of mine at the time, who did not get arrested and do time, are dead or still using. Prison helped me help myself and drove a huge life-long wedge between myself and those “fiends” of mine back then. But then again, many of those people who I see in the arrest records have been in and out- so more than anything it’s an inside job (self). Unfortunately many should just be left to completely do themselves in because they will never change.

If there are no services for addicts then decriminalization is totally a death wish for the vulnerable. No long term mental health facilities and access to addiction recovery services are too challenging. There has to be a safety net for decriminalization to be a good option. It’s honestly cruel how Portland decriminalized but didn’t have any safety net.

There are lots of drugs in jails. What also happens is that a person with addiction goes to jail, loses their tolerance, and then gets released and ODs because they used the same amount they were using before the arrest. Also, someone with an opioid addiction needs to be on Suboxone for the rest of their life (or close to it) in order to not use anymore. Most jails will only give Suboxone to individuals who already had a prescription before being arrested.

This is total bullshit in my opinion. I am a recovering addict and you cannot force someone to get clean unless they want to get clean. I went to jail, rehabs, and halfway houses so many times and until I wanted to get clean I didn’t. Also jail is the worst place for an addict you just meet more people and learn new ways to do things to get drugs. Neither this man nor the host has a clue what they’re talking about in regard to addiction and getting clean.

Jail really??? There's more drugs in jail then on the street😂 in order to beat addiction the person needs to want to quit and needs the right meds or therapy in order to do so. You ever see intervention the people who don't want help and are forced to don't end up getting better, they get out of treatment early and relapse and they're right back to being an addict. The ones who actually want help and go usually do best. If you wanna get better you'll do whatever it takes , being arrested and thrown in jail is not the answer, unless they have a mental health and behavioral health treatment.
