- Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan revealed the scariest match in their duet as an Indonesian men's doubles pair.
Mohammad Ahsan himself chose the 2014 Asian Games final as the most terrifying match he wanted to win. This was conveyed by Ahsan when he attended as a speaker at the Heroes' Day Media Talk event entitled 'The Club's Struggle in Giving Birth to Indonesian Badminton Heroes' virtually, Thursday (12/11/2020).
"The most frightening match for me was the 2014 Asian Games," said Mohammad Ahsan.
It's not without reason that the Palembang-born man chose the 2014 Asian Games final. According to Ahsan, there were various factors that made the match very difficult for him. One of them was because he and Hendra Setiawan faced Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon Seong who at that time were the world's number one men's doubles pair. From the previous meeting record, Ahsan / Hendra lost five times out of six matches.
"At that time I was injured and did not have time to take part in the world championship. Our record against opponents is also far away and they benefit because of their host status," said Ahsan.
"The opponent at that time was Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon Seong. We had previously lost to them many times. Then, we also targeted to bring home a gold medal," Ahsan said again.
At the same time, Mohammad Ahsan revealed the interesting story behind the hard struggle to win the 2014 Asian Games gold medal. At that time, the fate of their coach, Herry Iman Pierngadi, was also at stake if they failed to win. In the end, Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan managed to bring home the gold medal after beating Lee/Yoo with a score of 21-16, 16-21, 21-17.
"There was talk that if it didn't work, the coach would want to be replaced. Apart from that, we want to get a gold medal," said Ahsan. "There was indeed a lot of pressure, but didn't think about it too much and tried my best. Finally achieved it and feel relieved," he continued.
Unlike Mohammad Ahsan, Hendra Setiawan chose All England 2019 to be his most horrific match.
"At that time I pulled a muscle. However, I thought there was a chance to win, so I just forced it even though it hurt. Thankfully, we won in the end," said Hendra Setiawan.
