You missed the point that..... before it was taken over by Russia under Catherine the Great... and way before the Soviet Union.... Crimea belonged to the Crimean Tartars and de-facto Ukrainian.... not Russian. And Ukraine..then Kyivan Rus... existed for hundreds of years before Muscovy (Russia) even existed. So no. Crimea historically belongs to Ukraine not Russia.
If Ukraine is related to Kievan Rus then why it is Kievan RUS but not Kievan Ukr?

The UK has a "special relationship" with the US when it suits the US.
That relationship goes back to the 1700s, and the founding of the original 13 colonies. We generally speak "English" for heaven's sake!

Very informative
I think what they meant by “the duty of NATO” was more a moral duty not a legal one. Legally they don’t have to do anything cause Ukraine isn’t a member but morally we should be standing up to despots like Putin, though NATOs refusal to stand up to Netanyahu speaks to their rank hypocrisy on the subject.
Israel is outside the treaty territory which was originally because the members didn’t want to involve themselves in colonial wars. That is why the UK got no nato aid when the Falklands were attacked
So NATO has a morla duty? No it doesnt.
People like yourself don't ever stop to think what would happen if Hamas had the weapons that isreal have because if they did a ceasefire would never happen there would actually be a real ethnic cleansing which you seem to forget is the goal of Palestine.

If Ukraine don't become a NATO member they must depend their defence on nuclear weapons, what do Putin/Russia prefer, a Ukraine as a NATO member or a Ukraine with (functioning) nuclear weapons?
doncarlodivargas .....that is a good question. Would Putin prefer Ukraine be protected by nuclear weapons or by NATO? I think it is better Ukraine joins NATO. The fewer nuclear weapons there are, the safer the world is.
There is zero chance for either of it
@goenzoy712 - I think if Ukraine claim they will protect the baltic states, Poland and Romania with nuclear weapons it will be very tempting, and when north korea and Iran can have nuclear weapons, Ukraine can too
@@ERG173 - agree, this can be a dilemma for NATO members not wanting Ukraine to join
It's a pipe dream .
Poland ,Romania and Baltic states are only 2nd rate important economically
So EU should stop membership negotiation with Ukraine if they go after nukes
Ukraine is defending the whole of Europe from Ruzzia, with their blood and treasure. There should be no need for them to apply to be part of NATO; they should by de facto be in NATO.

About after Ukraine has won the war . . . ?! I am a Veteran of 14 years for my country, South Africa who had a very long protracted war against Angola from the about the mid sixties to the very early 90's! Yes, we were up against Angola, the USSR as well as Cuba in the West and Mozambique in the East.
My point is that many conscripts elected to join the permanent forces and or signed up for other Legionary
groups to assist with their newly attaied skill sets while in service! Our SANS was a very highly rated and motivated force who would take on any force with even greater force motivated by on simple ingredient "Our Mother Land"!
Great Q&A thank you Philip. No, we can never trust trump, he is totally transactional and do what pops into his head at the moment and he thinks will serve his interests best
I'd like to point out that when it comes to a draft/conscription that fighting for the survival of one's homeland is hugely different than fighting in a less important foreign war. One of the reasons Vietnam vets had such a hard time with morale is that there was no clear national security issue at stake.
A good step for Europe is to take their defense spending up to 4%.
Russia cannot take Europe seriously when they remain on a peace time
defense spending budget.
This is so detached from reality. It’s a spectacle to watch as a demonstration of the psychological mechanism of denial.

Trump is capricious and therefore not fit to be a leader!
lol. Your statements at 4:57 are Hilarious!
Even if unpleasant regarding the excellence of PI, here some major discontent concerning these UKR-NATO assessments, which are of course based on conventions he worked on during his career.
But there is too much different today to stick with them.
Aren't there three equally likely scenarios:
A:
RuZZia, yes, achieves it's goals, manages to fuel and exploit turmoil in "the west", manages to control Ukrainian government, manages to include Ukrainian fighting capacity, arms industry and ingenuity into it's new red army - and we are back to exactly the times, when I during compulsory service in German Bundeswehr learned to shoot Soviet Soldiers, two of which at right that time have been the Klitchko brothers, later German national heroes...
B:
Putin and Trump make a big boys deal, deviding gains among themselves, allowing both to satisfy their oligarchies and the necessary bread crumbs to keep their otherwise suffering people silent and Ukraine gets a failed state, a Lebanon on steroids in the heart of Europe.
C:
We, Europeans including Brits, recognize, that these conventions, that are right now our constraints, are from before 24.02.2022 and 05.11.2024/20.01.2025.
It are undeniable facts, that the average Trump supporter is much more energized by these Panama and Greenland endeavors than to protect places in Europe they'd never find on a map. Only 2 weeks in of #47 we have to recognize, that US isn't interested in NATO any more as common defense alliance and anchor of stability and freedom based on the Truman doctrine, but only as a sales platform for US defense industry.
Over all budgets European taxpayers spent in support for Ukraine about twice as much as US. Per average of the approx. 260mn EU-taxpayers that equals per year 6 dinners - without apéritif or champaign. That is no sacrifice and easy to double.
If there is the will.
The appeal. The later comes from understanding, that Europe can not bank its security on a partner that doesn't exclude military means against another partner, right if it is the biggest one.
But Europe could very well bank it's security on integrating the recently most experienced, most innovative, most adaptable and in result most capable fighting force - by doing what western countries and NATO did with Germany: If the free part wants to be with us and get protected - we do that - and figure out the rest later.
THAT would be to the benefit of the entire free world!
Not at least a stable, safe and prospering Europe, would remain the only anchor and haven for rule of law, human rights and human dignity, fight against propaganda, lies and corruption and FOR the planet.
Due to predictability, stability, educated workforce, superior infrastructure, freedom of science and research as well as outstanding standard of living as well THE place of the world for investments into innovations for the future.
Such - a beacon for all suppressed people in autocracies.
Soon as well Americans.
If NATO conventions are against that - call it ETO - or better GloTO - making it appealing for Canada, Japan, SouthKorea, Australia, ...

The most powerful nuclear member of NATO is France, not the United Kingdom. It has a larger and more extensive nuclear deterrent consisting of land, sea and air-launched nuclear weapons, whereas the UK only has the sea based submarine nuclear deterrent.
Also, with regards to Poland, they will be by far the most powerful army in Europe but will still fall short in terms of air power and sea power. It's an important distinction.
Oh really?
France more powerful nuclear arsenal than the US of A?

The russians currently fire 10 artillery shells to 1 ukraine artillery shell. Thats why the russians slowly advance.. that situation is only happening because NATO countries havent ramped up their industries for wartime production.. ukraine is just getting stuff already on the shelf.. and its limited stock.

I am in full agreement with all of your comments so far, and here is my first question: should the war in Ukraine end with poor results for Ukraine, which is a possibility, therefore in my opinion Ukraine should already now develop their own nuclear weaponry. Ukraine had all of the knowledge and capability of producing them, but gave it up in exchange for keeping Crimea. Now that Russia particularly broke shamelessly that agreement by invading Ukraine, Ukraine needs a strong deterrent of ever being attacked by Russia again. What is your opinion min that regard? Best regards, Urs

Great !
Question# If Russia financially collapse's, will the Russian army have to withdraw from Ukraine in total.? (pre 2014)
Financially Russia is not going to collapse because now it is taking over Ukraine and all its resources
Putin is not worried.
The US is.
As to conscription:
There is a third possibility. Having a Home Guard is the real recruitment basis for a contract army. Conscription is just about the worst solution. For years the only working element of the Baltic Nations was their Home Guard.
The main problem with conscription is that within a conscription system officers and NCO's are purposely chosen by incompetent officers that will ensure, that they can maintain their own lives in an emergency. Thus you have assured inability, dishonesty and incompetence - all factors that lead to atrocious losses in combat. In fact as a conscript with several years of experience as an NCO in the Home Guard the major part of my "service" was dedicated to planning who was to bumb off the NCO's and officers - to give the rest a chance to survive.
Now! Don't get me wrong: I don't think Home Guard is perfect - far from it! In my estimate 80% of peacetime strength is at best nonactive. The remaining 20% are so-so. But even on a bad day Home Guard efficiency is immensely superior to conscription - when using conscription as standard of measure you are not only putting the bar to pass on the ground - you are bloody well burying it to archeological depth - ie. preneolithic. And later in life, I made it a priority to keep former conscript NCO's and Officers from getting a job at all!
As to experience with peacetime casualties: I have had a comrade croak - litterarily - next to me in the Home Guard - during an exercise. It was partly an age problem, partly poor health issue that led to a catastrophic heart failure. It led to a temporary halt in the exercise with AWACS on our part while the paramedics tried resusitation - to no avail.
The other example is as a conscript put on access control (lovely warm day, as I recall), where I stopped a car with NATO registration plates, where a German Lt.Col. had to control his temper (doing a mediocre job). Now the casualty was the air stations security officer (a major) with whom I had a brief "talk" before submitting a written report to him. He committed suicide the very same day. (I don't know what happened to the German Lt.Col.)
Now access control is just about the easiest task to learn. Illustrating that 15 minutes of Home Guard instruction is vastly better than 9 month of conscription.
I hope You find it interesting and thought provoking.
No conscription will not help Ukraine. Modern weapons will! As it were the spontaneous rush to get weapons was what saved Ukraine. As Zelensky said: " I don't need a ride - I need ammunition!"
I agree that Ukraine is not at the moment capable of forcing the Russians out. But the real question is how long will it be before Russia as a nation collapses?

I think that it is very clear that any peace in Ukraine is going to require a NATO vote of some kind. Which means that NATO needs Turkey's vote. Turkey always gets paid for it's NATO vote, now they have something that they want, US and allies to leave Northern Syria, and abandon the Kurds to their fate. I expect that NATO will take that deal with little hesitation. Is it ok for NATO to end one invasion by setting up Turkey for another?
NATO won't have any say. Ukraine's gonna lose the war and surrender.
What about northern Ireland? Its ok when it suits the Americans and elements in London to talk about rules based order in Crimea how it's absolutely part of Ukraine even though the overwhelming part of population is Russian but when it comes to Northern Ireland it's now required to have in the Belfast agreement a means of interference in the short term from Foreign governments and in the long term complete takeover... one rule and policy for that but completely different one when it suits... Trump refuses to rule out a military takeover of both Panama canel and Greenland.. what kind of rules based order is that( who blew up Nordstream) .we have a rules based order on Tariffs GATT which is clearly now under the bus... a unipoler world?? The Americans in charge?
Conscription is likely impossible in western Europe and UK now.. we have all equality so exactly the same amount of women have to be called up as men?? all those 30 something women with kids are going to put on uniforms and go fight the Russians... good luck trying to sell that, men are easy to bully just use words like honour and duty if that doesn't work use the coward word.. Women won't be so easy to move..
Practically they couldn't house feed and equip and train 30 thousand conscripts.. the Russians had chaos early on when they called up 300,000 reservists.. they've clearly resolved those issues which the west would have to face. the west needs to hide its clear defeat in a fully complete peace deal (not a freeze).. and they need to do it now.
Very defeatist. Crimea has been colonised by the victor, like Northern Ireland, so yeah, it could reunite with Ireland, just like Crimea can decide what they want to do, once the endless Russian meddling is dealt with. By economic collapse.

@NeilHawkins-f1l it's not, how can it be.. the policy is clearly being applied differently between the 2 state's,in Northern island the policy is determined by what the overwhelming view of the majority of people there think ..in crimea its based on the view of the ukrainian government and the west believe, state's like the UK,US and Eu cannot claim a rules based order and have totally different policy and legal positions depending on what suits them politically also Russians in Crimea ARE 80%plus ethnic Russians this is a FACT.. what your talking about is western view that they are being declared from the outside as Ukrainian because they were born in what is deemed currently as Ukraine.. the illegal annexation of Crimea is correct in international law but not the reality on the ground (for the reasons I have already mentioned) the people who live there will have to leave their homes and move to Russia if ukraine takes over.. this we know because when the elected government in ukraine was forced out in a coup ( funded and supported by the west) that's what happened to all ethnic Russians in ukraine people were fired from jobs homes were seized bank accounts stolen and very large numbers of them fled to donbass and Russia.. the so called Right sector became the government.. in odessa blast a group of administrators (civil service personnel) who were Russians were given into the trade building which was then set on fire.. incidents have enraged the Russians.. when these people moved on Crimea the Russians acted to counter ( yes unlawfully under international law), a lot of people are alive and in their homes because of this action. The Russians proposed a federal structure so those Russians currently in these so called occupied areas could return to Ukrainian control with some form of Autonomy.. this was the Minsk agreement.. the eu and Germany aswell as Ukraine agreed and signed up.. it was not honoured by the west and the persecution continued... After leaving office the German Chancellor Angela Merkel in an interview with the press stated that this agreement was a tool to buy time to build up ukraines army for further action against the Russians (this statement was an extraordinary act of stupidity). As a result the Russians will not be stopping until those areas are fully secured. Predominantly in the donbass...
