Yeah, that’s not something you want to happen. Glad it worked out in the end. Regarding the camera, I have a much smaller rig than you do, (Sealife DC 2000 and dual flash), but I find that a heavy duty retractor attached to my BC works fine. It allows me freedom of movement with the camera, and yet I can drop it to have both hands free if required. It only drops a foot down my chest, so it’s easy to grab.

Good video, Tim! Agree with all you said. I’ve never been on a trip that didn’t have at least one incident that could have proven fatal. With proper prep and training the risks are minimized but never eliminated.

Im surprised you don't have any positively buoyant devices on your camera rig. I too have a divevolk and that thing is very heavy. Takes a lot of TLC to trim it out. Glad you made it out.

I do actually, but on this day, of all days, I had issue with a mount, and left my floats off. Murphy’s Law. ttps://th-cam.com/video/1G-JvWit8IQ/w-d-xo.html

    Hi Tim,
Good video, once again demonstrates how a good day can get seriously F'd up very quickly. Here in my home state of Queensland (Australia) SMBs, whistles and cutting devices are MANDATORY for every diver, and the Dive Operators will NOT let you dive without them. Snorkels are a slightly more controversial topic, but I agree with your sentiments. My (bright yellow) snorkel has been with me forever - although it's time to replace it. Look forward to more of your videos.

Thanks appreciate the feedback. I always at least carry a snorkel, even when diving kelp. I tuck it away, until needed.

I've heard of a lot of dives in the Caribbean where boat captains or DMs are either inexperienced or rush you through without safety in mind. I'd say keep and practice your SMB skills, bring a flash light always, buy a personal ePirb just in case.

Yea been rushed many times. My Phone, since I have Divevolk will work in most cases, but for sure in a place like Galapagos, an ePirb for sure....

From what I’ve seen the US Coast Guard uses snorkels when they jump out of the helicopter into the sea

I can put two fingers underneath my tongue and whistle ten times louder than that orange whistle. It is not hard to do once you learn how to do it.
