  • The Jota Moncadeña is the interpretation and adaptation by the old people of Moncada, Tarlac. Hence, the dance is named after the place from where it originated. It is a combination of Spanish and Ilocano dance steps and music. The use of bamboo castanets makes the dance lively, gay and delightful. [scribd.com]

What is Kamayan? "Kamay" is a Filipino word meaning hand. "Kamayan" refers to the method of eating using one's hands. Kamayan dinners are traditional Filipino feast where tables covered in banana leaves are filled from end to end with all types of Filipino food. Like any meal, a Kamayan meal is a time where people come together to partake and celebrate a part of their culture, a part of their home.
These ideas and values are what created Kamayan, District One's annual, intercollegiate Filipino culture show. At Kamayan, students and their universities' FSAs come together to celebrate Filipino culture through performance. After a long semester of practices, these students are rewarded with an amazing show, the camaraderie of their peers, the opportunity to explore their culture, and new friends throughout the intercollegiate network.
Kamayan 2018 will be held at Northeastern University in the auditorium of the newly built Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex (ISEC). Kamayan will feature performances from groups including:
Northeastern University's Barkada, the Philippine Society of Boston College, Boston University's Filipino Student Association, UMass Boston's Hoy! Pinoy!, The Filipino Club of UMass Lowell, and Simmons University Kababayan.
The theme this year is Decades. What decade are your favorite songs and artists from? What events, figures, and movements define each decade? As many students transition from their teens to twenties during college, what do they learn through this important transition? The classical Filipino dances you will see reflect decades, even centuries of tradition, passed down from generation to generation. The modern dance sets represent different decades of music and artists which have lasted the test of time to be popular today. We hope you enjoy these performances and our celebration of Filipino and Filipino-American culture.
