"Name them mountains,
call them stone."
My heart....
The Palestinian-American poet Lena Khalaf is referring to specific people and incidents when mentioning most Names in this poem; Shaymaa is the name of an Egyptian poet and activist who was shot by the regime. Hamza is the name of Egyptian flagellant who was well-known in the sixtes. Mohhamed, Ahed, Zakaria and Isma'il are four Palastanian children (9~11 years-old) who were killed by An Israeli air-strike on the shore of Ghaza city.
Oh wow I thought it was based on the name meanings or origins. Thanks for sharing this!
@@Razbeariez it is also that, which is what makes it truly a great poem.
Hamza actually is a Syrian boy tortured and killed by the Syrian regime in 2011.
I was sitting crying on a rock... And then I watched this, got up, looked at the rock... And started crying some more....
"Name them mountains
Call them stone"
Those last two lines don't just resonate because they're powerful and overwhelmingly heart-wrenching, but the delivery was all the most impactful.
Thank you. I'm going to be thinking about this one for a while.
The sadness in her voice at the very end.
These videos are usually released mid morning for me and it's a wonderful (although sometimes, like today, sad) kind of break. I'm so grateful for everyone who makes it happen :)
lorenabpv you words exactly, I’m enjoying ours poetica so much!
Thank you! We're grateful for your attention. -Paige
I always enjoy listening to your so accurately chosen poems! 💖
"This endless season of decay."
Oh my god.
Thank you for writing this. Thank you for reading this.
This is just the saddest thing I've ever heard. I hope and pray and work so that we never get to know the horrors of war and that we get to prevent that horror from ever reaching others.
I don't know why the last lines hit me so bad , what a beautiful poem.
This is what poetry is, describing that what we can't put into words ourselves
"Do not taunt the torturer's whip
with promises of steadfastness"
... woah
This one hurts. The unheard cries of the fallen children are a damnation upon our greed and apathy.
I've been reading fiction from Palestinian writers about life in Gaza specifically in my English course. This poem is sadly so reminiscent of the themes that all of the stories had: death, lost time, a misconstrued way of mourning. Heartbreaking, but so so good.
That was beautiful beyond words, thank you
I keep trying to hold back the tears, but I can't. This was so powerful and so heart breaking.
Whatever the noun for somber is, has been a theme this year.
Somberness?
Checks out. Thank you. I was torn between somberity and sombiosis.
I am in love with this.
What a heartbreakingly beautiful poem. This will stay with me for a while.
I’m in awe of this one...
beautiful and heartwrenching
Phenomenal poetry. 10/10
Looks like I found a new favourite poem 💙
Heartbreaking
beautiful. Thank you for remembering them.
So sad, yet so beautiful.
beautiful poem
to read this on May 2021... :")
incredible
Wow. Just, wow.
That was beautiful.
Damn.
Gut renching clever and beautiful!
As an Israeli this poem helps me understand and morn the Palestinian children lost to the conflict the way I try to morn the Israeli children lost...
It's hard and strange... To morn children... It's harder still for all of us to see all the children as our children...
oh, my heart. that one hurt.
Oof this one hit hard
