I loved your video! All the people I follow have stashes like you. No one should be ridiculed because of their "STASH) If people can't deal with your stash they don't have to watch your video. I'm just a beginner, I would love to have a stash but A- I don
I don't drive, and I don't leave my house except to go get groceries ONCE per week. That was even before Covid. But I am also a VERY "crafty" person... I crochet, I loom knit, I do beadwork, diamond painting, cross-stitch, beaded cross-stitch, friendship bracelets, jewelry, sketch, resin, polymer clay, air dry clay, painting, adult coloring, scratch art, decopage and other paper crafts, and probably some other crafts that I'm forgetting to mention. I have a **ridiculous** amount of "craft stash". I have dozens of diamond paintings (some finished, some not yet), literally **thousands** of beads, a bedroom turned craftroom where 2 full walls are nothing but yarn, plus several LARGE bins filled with yarn, plus boxes of yarn that I haven't unboxed yet. I have all kinds of tools for every craft I do. It's kind of a joke in my family that if anyone needs anything, they just come to me. Like, my daughter and her husband are here a lot and she broke her glasses once. I had tiny screws and a tiny screwdriver to fix them. She wanted to make a glitter bomb for one of her husbands nephews and I had bottles of glitter. I can start just about any kind of new craft and already have half the "supplies" I'll need for that new craft. Many would call me a "craft hoarder" - and maybe I am, but it makes me happy. Like you, I can go in my craft room and just look around and decide what I "feel" like making. I basically have my very own built-in craft store. My husband makes plenty of money to support my crafts and his own hobbies of his choosing. Our children are grown, so it's just us. Here's the thing... when I'm feeling depressed or stressed out, I can go in my craft room with all my beautiful yarns and beads and other things, and just sit down. I can look around at all the lovely colors and instantly feel relaxed, because that is how my brain works. It's not shelves of chaotic colors. It's not an overwhelming stash of stuff. It's my personality, my joy, my passion, my chi, my comfort. I don't have closets full of clothes or shoes, or a house full of expensive sets of furniture. One of my very most favorite TH-cam Creators has a crochet channel, and she won't even do "craft room tour" videos because she's done them in the past and people got rude with her. I just don't understand that. I don't understand "stash shaming". Frankly, I don't understand shaming someone over anything. But then, I don't understand a lot of the things that you TH-cam Creators go through. I've watched videos where Creators apologize because we can hear their kids playing in the background, or because a car went by and they had a window open, or because they didn't have time to put make-up on, or because... oh dear lord... because they are....HUMAN. I don't understand why anyone would need to apologize for those things, but then I realize they are apologizing because some petty-minded person complained. You shouldn't have to apologize because the sun is coming through a window, or because you put your hair in a ponytail instead of spending an hour to wash, dry, and style it for your viewers pleasure. Nor should you need to apologize because you have more yarn than someone else, or because your craft room looks more like a craft store. You shouldn't have to apologize if you only have 3 skeins of yarn because you work project to project. You shouldn't have to apologize because you don't have actual "craft" scissors, so you're using the "kitchen" shears. I know this is a long post, and I apologize for that (LOL!)... but I really appreciated this video and I hope folks will understand the meaning of it. You guys that spend HOURS creating videos, editing them, uploading them, answering questions, reading emails, reading through FB groups - some people just don't appreciate the time you've spent doing all of that, but I do. Many others do also, and those are the only ones you should really "worry" about. You now have a new Subscriber. Thank you!
I understand. I am working on a secret project for a new secret weapon that will cover the earth in yarn for 500 years. People into crochet and knitting have an agenda!! World destruction. We are going to launch a rocket into outer space loaded with enough YARN IN BLUSH PINK THAT WILL BLOCK OUT SUNSHINE
Happy Crafty Homemaker makes my heart so full seeing the smile on their face knowing how happy they are especially in these times were in we shouldn’t bring anyone down
My family and friends yarn shame me. I am not working because of health issues but I can still knit and crochet. I started making things to donate to those in need. When I find a great sale, I will buy a lot of yarn. It’s good for me because it keeps me busy and gives me a purpose. I don’t understand anyone judging others on how they choose to live their life.
Non-crafters may never get it... I buy a lot on more than 50% off sales. Especially for donation items. I can get more items for my dollar if I buy smart.
friends or family that shame you are not your friends , and as for family , they should be more respectful .. I do hope you get well.. I ve been home without going out for at least 4 months.. and knittin, and crocheting makes my day every day.. to take heed people keep busy doing things you like and you wont get depressed.. my prayers are with you Kristin..
I've been doing a lot of charity and Etsy crafting since my health puts me out of work too, it helps keep me motivated and happy ❤ and it's nice to make others happy as well :)
Yarnie people really love their yarn. To tear apart that person for something they have collected and love is no one elses business. My house has lots of yarn all over. I don't use patterns . I am also the yarn inspired maker. Anyone that has a problem with that can leave.
Well said! It’s amazing how a crafters brain works and processes. What works for one person might not work for another. Loved your rant. Thank you for your perspective.
Thank you!! 100%! Everything is about it is personal. We all have our thresholds of what we can take and take in but that is so different person to person!!!
Amen and amen Miss Carrie. I don’t walk into my sisters art room and say “you just have too many watercolors in here for those beautiful paintings you have on your walls and my walls”. What on earth!
I think it's awful to shame anyone..nothing more than adult bullies.. that have not grown up. Your money your passion..do what you love..no ones business. My stash is mostly Clearance or sale yarns..
Most of what I have built my stash with is also clearance and more than 50% sales. I also find it just to be adults bullying... It is a sad way to be...
@@HappyCraftyHomemaker There is a culture of yarn snobbery that has developed and it is pretty appalling really. The "this yarn is 50% cashmere, 20% merino, 10% yak, 10% alpaca, 5% weasel and 5% yearling mongoose" brigade who can be so sneering towards others. Not that there is anything wrong at all of course with using that sort of fibre if you wish but looking down at those who either don't or can't is just so rude and there is a sizeable minority who are indeed bullies when it comes down to it.
@@YvonneWilson312 it’s a shame as most in the yarn community are nice but there are always those who feel the need to bash people. I believe it is jealousy. I have been crocheting on and off for 40 years and my stash has some yarns from 40 years ago! I didn’t go out and buy hundreds of balls of yarn yesterday. I love my yarn stash as it gives me inspiration. I do understand that some cannot afford to stash but to bash others for it is simply childish.
@@hummingbirdess8763 Same here, Susan! Every so often I discover a special treat, i.e. a yarn I had forgotten about buying but somehow it slipped down the back! It feels like I've won a prize - a prize that I bought of course! I love my stash. When you have been crafting as long as we have it would be very hard not to have built one up. I believe!
I use to buy only as needed. However, in the last 5 years it has been very difficult for me to get out very often. Because of this I find having a stash that I can go to is a big help with my crafting. I do miss going to the big box craft stores and being able to see all the new yarn that are out before I purchase. It is so great to have podcasters, like yourself out there getting the new yarns showing it, reviewing it so those who like me have a better idea what the new yarns are like. I have made up for all the years I didn't stash. Yarn subscriptions, Amazon, online craft stores, Yarn swapping, all have helped me build a very large stash. I'm not ashamed to have it. It make me happy knowing I can always have something on my hooks or needles without waiting for a delivery. I agree you you so so much with what you have said many many times. Please be kind, be nice to people in general. If you don't have anything nice or positive to say then just be quite. Stop watching and go else where. There is so much going on. To much hate, to much anger, so much sadness, we just don't need anymore.
I think we all grow and change over time. What we need and want change at different points in our lives. Not being around stores is a big part of it too. I didn't mention it while doing this video but a lot of people have commented on not being able to get to the stores is why they horde when they do.
@@HappyCraftyHomemaker if we were completely honest we love just looking at the yarn because not only is it YARN but it is all what we like in color, weight, whether it's in cakes, hanks, skeins, or balls. Sometimes I can get a bit blah and not sure what I want to make, then I will spot one of my yarny friends and POP. Ok that's what I'm doing next. Or I will grab up some kitchen cotton and make some dish clothes. Thank you for this video and going through the differences.
I’m 52, I kept my yarn, fabric, scrapbook stuff, sewing machine, what have you in totes, for years. Until my kids left home. That’s when I got a room, for a craft room. Then Bam! I had a stash! Lol I love looking at stashes! Great video Carrie!
Thank you for addressing this issue because it really is not anybody’s business to judge another for ANYTHING! Please don’t let these people affect the joy you find in your making. You are a strong lady and I’m pretty sure you won’t let this happen-even as it sucks to be ‘shamed.’ Carry on lovely lady. ❤❤❤❤
They don't bother me... I feel bad for people who hate instead of be happy for others... I do think a lot of times it does come from a place of not understanding how we process differently. It is like when we were kids and finding our learning style and thinking we were "slow" until we realized we consume information differently.
Is normal to cope with benefits to treat depression and ptsd and anxiety. It lowers the Risk of preventing suicidal symptoms and also starting on new medications. Crocheting and knitting is therapeutic and it also treats. Emotional pain
I live far away from stores and I’m mostly bed ridden so in all honesty I need a large stash so if there is something I want to make I can. If I didn’t have it I would be waiting weeks to get the yarn in the mail or maybe a month to go to a store. My stash was mostly built on amazing yarn sales or clearance. Also when I look at my yarn all I see I happiness. 😍🥰😀💜
I personally don’t care to have a bunch of yarn I’d never use, and for that I have made a choice not to buy mystery boxes or buying yarn just because it’s cheap but I don’t like it. I did that with fabric and in the end, I felt bad for being wasteful. I also don’t have a lot of space for a stash. But what someone else does is their business and if I had space, I’d be all over having a yarn wall for the beauty of it. My last video of me saying “I’m not a yarn hoarder” is all about me keeping myself in check because because I am mostly homebound and keep most things in my bedroom so I can easily access it. If my stash gets out of control I start to feel like the walls are closing in. Having said that, next time we move, I’m going to think twice about sacrificing a craft room for the sake of a nicer smaller house. So I feel like I’m somewhere between “all the yarn” and “project driven”. But one day, I vote that @chronicallycrocheting and I move in together, share a caregiver and a craft room/stash and live happily ever after!😂
"Do you want to build your stash up? Let's go bin shop to-daaaaay." Just made sense in my head with the tune from Frozen. lol! I agree with you... I'm tired of seeing the bashing in my crafting groups. If you're a yarn-hoarding dragon: cool! If you've got a drawer with some special skeins and a basic or two: also cool. Gatekeeping schmucks suck.
😂😂😂😂😂 Some how I knew that was Frozen before I got to the sentence... LOL!!! The bashing is really exhausting and frustrating. I love seeing how everyone works and seeing their work space and process is so amazing! I am learning something new constantly with exposure to others' being themselves... Gatekeeping schmucks is a great term for it!!!
For me, my wool is an extension of my pursuit of fibre art. The colours I see and the tactile experience provide me with such happiness. The wool has opened the doors to exploring other forms of fibre art, from traditional rug hooking and weaving to wool appliqué and now crochet. My wall and cabinets of wool fabric, yarn, roving, sari silk, etc. are extensions of my art and “spark joy”!
That is the thing!! They should spark joy and bring you inspiration!!! What that looks like person to person is different and to shame a crafter for their joy... It is MEAN!
10:53 I aprechiate your mention of such a thing, because I am one of those people. I love looking at a yarn stash like yours, but I hate owning such a large stash. It makes me anxious. All I can think of owning too much yarn is "OMG this is going to be such a nightmare to move house". I like living in a way where I can pick up and go whenever I want, and having lots of yarn doesn't work for my "free-spirit-nomad" way I live my life. However, I of course, totally respect folk who enjoy building up large collections :) 12:22 I feel I should clarify my situation though. I've never had a large stash (although I think I own too much even having a small stash). The main driver for me to keep it small has been that my great-grandmother was a hoarder, and I grew up in a household where my family were very much "if you have four items on a surface instead of three you're gross and messy and we'll throw out all of your stuff when your back is turned". I feel horrible/guilty if I have too much stuff in my home. As though if I have too much, then someone will come and throw it all in the trash. I'm nearly 30 though 14:17 On a more positive note, I DO use a single skein, or a little yarn nugget. Over the years I've developed a bit of a skill regarding using every little scrap. It's only very recently I've gained some financial stability, so I couldn't just buy more wool for a project, so I had to stretch out what I had. One main strategy I have done is adding a stripe of a different colour. This will use up the nugget and stretch out my main colour a little more, meaning I don't need to buy that extra ball of wool to make up that last 20g. Made a big difference when I had no money. 17:10 She sounds so lovely. I'm glad she thinks of others in the community :)
Creators all make in different ways and approach crafting differently. I make a lot of donation items, so for me the scraps get used in all kinds of projects. 2022 was making squares out of the as I went to make donation blankets. I have put same colors together for shawls. They have been used in striped projects... When I was unable to buy much I learned quickly how to scratch yarns and make them really last.
I get inspired when someone gives me some yarn. They may not like it anymore or just don't want it. I take it put on shelf and think of things I can make. It's a challenge to me. I get excited when I see yarn.
That is a fun challenge! I got, in my opinion, the ugliest yarn ever to be made. It took me 6 months, but I carried it with a solid and turned it into a softie. It was the cutest thing EVER!!! I so wish I had a picture of it to share! I think that yarn had stymied 3 people before me, it was OLD and clearly had been passed around.
I totally agree with you! Just be nice as everyone is different and that’s what makes the world interesting. I enjoy seeing other crafters yarn stashes as it gives me inspiration.
Standing and cheering, well said. I know it has changed for me. I now am feeling overwhelmed by what my stash has become, which is ok. It means I give to other's and to prayer shawl group. I love seeing how you use your stash and Leslie amazes me with how her sweaters and items come together.
Thank you so much!!! Leslie is phenomenal! I love listening to her talk about everything! I think our stash needs change over time. Each of us have our own thresholds of what we want/need. It is a wonderful thing!
Love this. Thank you, Carrie! People should not be so tunnel visioned for sure! I love how you explained mindset of different crafters. I never really analyzed the "why" or the "how" that dictates the mind of an artist of any sort. I'm a minimalist in life but after I was gifted a large quantity of yarn, I began to organize & display! I love how my yarn wall looks like an art gallery to me.
I know it is hard to see it from the other side, but it isn't just one way. It is so personal on so many levels about what you can take in, work with, see... And it can change as we change in life... I think for any kind of crafter, being organized for you so you will work with something is critical. Finding your own organization is a different, super personal thing...
Love looking at people's yarn. I am one who definitely has more than I need but I love yarn. I am like you and need the noise to create. Respect is a dying art and it's a shame.
I'm so glad I went and looked at your back videos and found this one. I was wondering why some crochet tubers have so many yarns in the background and while I am a newbie crochettuber, I can't just buy yarn without being overwhelmed by it. Now thanks to this video I understand it is because I am project driven. Great insight! Thanks for sharing this.
It is a preference thing. It can be overwhelming. Having a small stash or no stash is a great practice if it works for you!!! I know quite a few people who craft best with no clutter.
I joke about my craft hoard , I do not joke about other people's hoard . Well that isn't strictly the case , we are a teasing family and each have our own different treasure hoards. I am a visual crafter , I need to see what I have. I also prefer to shop my stash whenever possible . That is my process. I am a live and let live kind of person . I genuinely love seeing haul videos and seeing people who have the stash of their dreams . I am equally happy for those who have found they are better served by paring down . Be kind .
I will tease all day long. I will never demean or harm. I do a lot of shopping my stash and coasting around the room to see what I want to work with next! Some of the haul videos are wonderful to watch!!! I love seeing where there was a haul and then the person turns around the next videos and says... Hey, I just had to make with this as soon as it came into the house! I learned my way of sorting and organizing from a minimal stash person. She has no where near the amount that I have collected but... Her way of sorting her tiny stash made perfect sense to my brain, I just scaled it up for my stash.
I agree with you people should not belittle others for what they have. I love to see your craft room, looking at other people’s stash or craft space is beautiful no matter what it is I just love seeing craft supplies be it yarn my favorite or any other . It makes me feel in haven ❤️❤️❤️❤️💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾🧶🧶🧶🧶 . Please show your craft room more on your videos it’s inspiring God bless and have a wonderful evening 🙏🏾❤️
I am hoping to do a walk through my room again soon. I have been slowly reorganizing based on how I am using it. I got it set up after we moved 18 months ago and now it is fine tuning how I am using it.
Awesome awesome video! I am so glad you posted this video. Shaming (no matter what the topic is) is just unnecessary and could quite possibly be harmful. We all just need to revel in people’s differences.
It IS fascinating hearing about & seeing other people's stash. You've got me thinking about how I can be more intentional with my purchases. Thank you! 🤗
Your yarn wall inspires me, Carrie! There is so much negativity in the world, we as crafters don't need to go around being mean about one another's stash.
Hi! I just came across this video this morning. I'm going to do a craft tour of my room tomorrow. I was actually thinking about backing out or only showing part of my stash. I'm not a yarn person. I'm quilter. You described my approach to making a project perfectly. I also admire but maybe not fully understand people who shop one project at a time. I've decided to go ahead with a full tour and not apologize for who I am. Thanks so much! I love your stash!
SHARE and come back and link the video here! I want to see your fabric! I will have an updated room tour soon. It has been just shy of a year and things around here have changed a bit since I have gotten more settled in my new room.
@@HappyCraftyHomemaker Hi this is Denise. I'm not sure how to share a link. So it's Lisa Capen quilts craft room tour with my name Denise Sefton. Hope this helps
WONDERFUL podcast.I love to see all the colors and how it's displayed. However, most important to me is the content of the podcast. What they make and how they made it.I admire people who buy enough for a project at a time.
I have a ton of patterns and am in the process of trying to sort them out. I have quite a bit of yarn mainly because my husband bought me a bunch of yarn, knitting needles, looms and crochet hooks in the last year before he passed away while fighting cancer. Every time we went to Kansas City for his treatments, he would insist we stop at Michael's and Joann's on the way home to buy yarn. If I said I didn't need any, he would say "you never know when you will need it." Since he passed away, the yarn I use is my way of connecting with him and shows me how much he loved me. This is not to say that I haven't bought any yarn in the last year but most of the projects I have made with the yarn my husband bought have gone to our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The kids know where the yarn came from and it makes it more valuable to them.
I need to sort my printed patterns after I am done with my paper crafting things that are pulled out... I am so sorry for your loss! My husband is also an enabler and I can see how you feel the connection with yours while working the purchases you made with him! It does make it that much more meaningful to you and to those you have gifted with the FOs! Troy is very invested in my "pleasure in crafting" but has no interest in it at all. If I say I want to stop in to a store though he will take me and walk around with me and tell me to buy more if I love it.
“Be kind! Be loving! Be your best self... and encourage others to be their best selves...”. Wise words from an awesome lady!!! Thank you so much for encouraging us to be creative in a place that makes us HAPPY in our own way...no matter whether we have a large stash or no stash at all! I would be interested in hearing your tips and tricks on how to create a stash wisely! Stay safe. Be healthy. Live your best life.
Hi Carrie! People at times flabbergast me, hurting others does not make you look good. Really enjoying your conversation, and looking at those two pink cotton cakes! Have those and now know what I want to do after looking at them. I craft in different ways sometimes pattern centric, sometimes yarn centric.
Very true! There are times I am more project driven, but that isn't really the norm for me. But it is always fun to see what works even day to day for me and others!
There is enough negative things in this world without attacking or saying hurtful things to people. We have what we have, or purchase what we want, everyone has a right to do as they want craft wise, we should not shame or be hurtful to others! In our crafty world we should inspire each other as crafting is our stress relief and love. Thank you for a great video! You are very inspiring and creative and I love seeing all the different things you make. My mama taught me if you can’t say something nice it is best to say nothing at all-I wish more people believed this.
Thank you for this explanation!! I have recently started watching knitting podcasts due to covid and saw all the stashes and wondered why folks had them. I can overspend to deal with stress, but you helped me realize that (a) I am a project knitter (didn’t know it had a name) and (b) folks with stash aren’t (and I have already forgot what type of knitter you are)!!! You have freed me from fear of missing out!!!! Your explanation was excellent. Finally, I am a Professor and get criticized a bit. Providing an explanation to ‘why’ always helps ... you did a GREAT job!!!
I don't know if that is a real name for it. But that is how I see them and it fit the process much better than looking at the stash contents. FOMO can be insidious! I still have issues with the hype and then let down from retail marketing. Understanding why is critical in most things. You address change without understanding why.
This made me remember when my adult daughter helped me unpack after a move. After seeing my WIPS she asked with a scandalous voice “ don’t you ever finish anything!?” My reply was Yes I just start more than I finish! End of judgement.
I'm so grateful for your commentary, your channel content & your yarn crawls! I'm a self taught crochet from TH-cam. I'm grateful for channels like yours that taught me this wonderful craft.I didn't learn until my 49-50th birthday. I became so excited about yarn I started collecting. The FOMO obsession is totally real! Some of us with stashes, or yarn scapes as another TH-cam channel likes to refer to her lovely collection, scooped up our skeins at a mere $.64-$1.74 at clearance sales. Then discovered that no...that's not the yarn for me, it's too....something or other. I ended up donating A LOT to nursing homes and the like. Now at 55, I buy yarn specifically for projects or save up for special yarn I just....want. Sometimes I receive yarn as gifts or treat myself to a few of those clearance sales. I don't drink, party, have tattoos, lots of jewelry, fancy hair appointments, lots of clothes or shoes, etc...things other people spend their money on. Yarn gives me joy. It's my money, my home, my business with what I do with my "craft room, closet, corner, cubby", etc. I can enjoy being excited for you about yours.🥰💝🧶🧶
I love watching other people’s stashes because it gives me ideas on how to fix mine. I have some yarns mostly the ones I can afford and when I see them they give me such joy ( I don’t use the K method because I would keep everything jijijiji) and make me want to use them and buy more ( I only have acrylic and some cotton, lol). I have them in boxes cuz I don’t have too much space. Thank you for defending the stash 👍🏼
I’m kind of a combination of the project-driven versus stash-driven. So much of my stash is meant for specific projects on my list, but then the rest is yarn I purchased on sale and will use eventually. I don’t like buying yarn unless it’s on sale, so I will build up my stash with sale yarn so I have it already when a new project pops up I want to make.
My stash is 90% sale or clearance things that I knew I wanted to work with. I will sometimes buy for a project just because it has to exist in my life, but even still I will shop my stash first.
I've heard your name A LOT from other podcasters and thought: hmm, I need to check her out. But then I'd get distracted and another day passed without watching one of your podcasts. Then this one showed up on my "suggested" videos and it was like Finally! You Tube read my mind correctly! So glad this was the first one I watched. Totally agree with everything you said. And now I'm a subscriber. Yay.
Thank you so much. We are each different and we need to learn to be respectful about how each of us work and make. I feel like buying for projects is so streamlined and I wish that I worked that way. You can just pack up and go vs finding storage and organization. I love it!!!
Very well said and I fully agree, I love being able to pick up a yarn in my stash and decide what I want to do. And I have yarn and fabric as I love to sew too but I also do mixed media and enjoy that as well. Stay safe love and hugs xx
Thanks for sharing. I remember when I first started out crocheting and shared my stash for the first time. Someone made a rude comment because to them my stash was apparently smaller than what they have seen from others. But, it felt big to me at the time. People will definitely find the smallest things to complain about or to discourage others.
There is no such thing as a too small stash. That is just rude to insult you for your baby stash. We all start somewhere and it is really is shocking the first time you have a tote of yarn for just because. I will share my stash pictures when someone says they are worried or that their partner is saying they have too much. You can always be the next step too far...
I think so too. In the last two months, you were talking about seeing projects in some of the yarns you were going through and it very much kind of how it happens over here. BTW, that marled neon I love this yarn you are working with keeps telling me it wants to be 5 different things. That is yarn is just so much fun!!!
I love, love, love seeing others yarn stashes! It weirdly makes me happy. I have a pretty good sized one & I’ve only been crocheting 5+ years, really got into it big time the last few years. Crochet & yarn make me ridiculously happy. It’s just people wanting to yuck someone else’s yum.
I agree. Every crafter is different. It depends mainly on my mood for the day. Sometimes I know the exact yarn that I want to use and other times I want to make a pattern but I don't know which yarn would compliment the pattern best. The majority of my stash has been gifted to me either through family or giveaways. I like having a variety of different yarns that I can use as inspiration on an individual basis. Thank you for this amazing video. HappyYarning
I have a lot of gifted yarn in my stash. When someone hears that you crochet or knit... There is always that person that drops off a giant bag of old stash yarn because they don't know what to do with it. I have also been blessed with crafty friends who have gifted me things that they don't want to work with anymore or can't work with. I love having options around me for pleasure. I like choice. Hence the stashing but also not being mad when I get starteritis and then have my choice of started projects to work on for weeks!
@@HappyCraftyHomemaker yes. last year my uncle who use to knit gave me about 90 percent of his stash. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the wool yarn because i've never really worked with it. And my coworkers bring yarn to me at work when they find it in garage sales. Its amazing how everyone helps to build our stashes and the beautiful creations that come from those acts of kindness.
I love my stash. It is substantial. I have achieved SABLE (Stash Accumulation Beyond Life Expectancy). Using Ravelry’s stash feature has been wonderful in keeping track of what’s in the stash. When I find a pattern I want to make on Ravelry I love that it tells me what yarns I have in my stash that others have used for that pattern. Now that I’m retired and have less disposable income, having a stash is great. I shop my personal yarn store.
I tried the Ravlery stash thing... I couldn't maintain it. I am too analog... I love that it works for you! It is so brilliant and I love how well it works at helping you to pair your stash to projects!!! It is a wonderful tool!
That is the beauty of watching other crafters. I can admire their stashes without becoming overwhemed or having to try to create just to use it . I just donated about 10-15 skeins. I closed my eyes, grabbed yarn and asked if it was staying or going. It took the issue of lying to myself out of it. I love Ross' stash. You have to wonder if there are ever any people burglarizing yarn stashes. I am learning to buy for projects instead of just because. It seems like, unless a person has a hoarding issue, not yarn stash, that people should just mind their own and let others be.
Really Miz Penny...what is normal? Your normal is normal to you and ect...LOL I love your space! I LOVE it! I see so many of your yarns that make me want to make. 🤷♀️❤️❤️
This is fascinating. Judging people is atrocious, but I enjoyed your thoughts on stash-driven vs project-driven crafters. I'm actually a cross between the two -- I like to keep my stash behind doors because I find it overwhelming, but I have a large stash. And the reason I have a large stash is because I am project-driven and want to MAKE ALL THE THINGS! So, when I look at my stash I see all the projects that I plan to make but now I have to live to 100 to make them all. :)
Great video! Just found your channel and love your take on this! I love my yarn stash and love looking at others! Negative comments about other peoples choices is just awful. Very well said, and I’ll be settling down to watching more of your videos! ❤❤
Welcome to my crazy corner of the internet! I think it is always so sad because there are so many chances for us to support eachothers' styles not shame them for not being the same.
I'm like you. I get inspired by something in my Stash and then go look for a pattern. I just did a video showing my stash, now I'm wondering if I should post it..... Of course I will! Rosie
I love your yarn Stash. There are people who wish there stash looked like yours don’t let negative people get you down. I’m starting my own little stash.
Any Artist needs a palette to draw inspiration from and so does a textile or yarn artist. The shamers usually don't have skills or hobbies....ever noticed that? We confront them because we are prioritising our passion.
100% I have noticed that in my personal life, but even crafter to crafter... I think a lot of it is lack of understanding of each other and their process.
@@HappyCraftyHomemaker i laughed at your video of opening Cheryls gifts in 2019. Im the biggest dork there is, down to nose in a book and Super Mario video games. I think i will be very happy here 🥸🥳😍
Great video Carrie I don’t judge we all craft differently I have lots of yarn, at first I was just buying Everything and anything now I buy yarns I love I know if I go into the room with my yarn I look and see what inspirers me thanks so much. I wish when I first started stashing yarn someone was there to help me I have given so much away because I knew I would never use it
I really wish I had had a yarny guru when I was starting out building a stash. I learned the hard way how to build and what to build... But, as I have passed things on, they have brought more and more joy.
Thanks the on point info and conversation. Too bad it needs to be said, so many judgmental negative people anymore who can’t wait to jump in somebody’s business. Be kind - be encouraging - be respectful - or keep quiet. Love you!!! 🧶💕🧶
Crystal from Bag O Day talked about this video so I came over. I just love your style. I've subscribed and I'm staying. And I have more stash than I could possibly use in 2 lifetimes but before the good Lord takes me, I'll use everything I can and donate the rest to someone who will love it as much as I do!
Crystal is amazing! I am so flattered that she liked this video. I am still fan girling over her comment on it! Those afterlife donations are how many of us start our stashes!
This is absolutely what I needed today. A lot of people don't understand supply driven inspiration. I tend to get inspired by the yarn first, THEN the pattern. I'll find yarn I enjoy, that I KNOW I want to work with, and then I will keep it until I find THAT pattern. I know it'll get used, it's there. I'm primarily an afghan maker so when people see skein or roll or hank upon one another, they often forget that out of that pile of 20 skeins, half of them will be gone with ONE project. I'm a large project person so when I buy, I buy yarn to make sure I have enough to complete a large project or enough to split into two projects. When it comes to organization, for me...out of sight, out of mind. I literally cannot mentally keep track of something if it's not somewhere I can see regularly. So if I have my stash displayed openly, it's never to "show off" and it's not to be "greedy"...it's because I literally have to keep inventory that way. I NEED to see my stash in order to know that that yarn exists. I had yarn I packed up in my closet to get it out of the way of reorganizing. It's not a closet I use for hardly anything other than stashing old keepsakes. It was MONTHS before I opened that closet and SURPRISE! YARN!
I am glad I was able to make you feel better! My husband enables me but NO ONE else in my family really gets it. I am 100% supply driven. I want to work with a things and then pattern search. If I can't see it I won't use it and it annoys me that I still have so much hidden. I am making room to change that but at the same time I know I have LOVELY things hidden in the cubes.
Hello Carrie Penny, Crystal BOD, recommended this video, Glad to be here. Also, there are hyper focused crafters that buy everything until they get inspired by something, then they hyper focus on projects, that is me, I just tell my husband I am building up my nest egg, lol
Thank you!!! Crystal is so kind! I have another friend who is looking at her stash as building for when she retires and won't have the income to buy everything.
I'm glad someone has made a video about this! You took the time to see the process differences and that is so important. I'm a combination of process and project. My stash inspires but if I don't have the right yarn I get it or the project waits until I have the right yarn, or something else will grab my interest while I'm waiting for the right yarn. Sometimes I don't know where my making impulses will take me. It really is a journey and not a destination for me. Though having finished projects has become a motivator lately, so I feel I've done something fun with part of my stash😄. Great topic and video!
Thank you so much. I wish more people took a few seconds to really hear what they were saying and how it sounds. I can't stand shaming in general and understand it even less when it comes from a fellow crafter.
@@HappyCraftyHomemaker Exactly. What good does it do to say one way is better than another? It is baffling 🧐. Shouldn't the ones shaming be spending their time more wisely, making more? Rather than taking the time to shame someone over someone else's techniques?🙄 Anyway, maybe talking about it will show the shamers that kindness is what is needed not disapproval. Have a great week.
Petulant children tend to resort to name-calling. Every room in my house, including a clear tote that I keep in a corner of my bathroom (even just to look at it) and even a small box that I keep in my kitchen, has yarn in it. I think jealousy is what causes many to be judgemental in their comments. I actually feel sorry for those people. I don't read patterns. The colors and textures of my fibers inspire me on all my projects! I like your words "opportunistic purchases". My stash is also beyond life expectancy. Kinda sad to me cuz I really do wanna use it all! I liked hearing about the styles of crafters in your life. I might consider Konmari of a lot of my "stuff" to be able to make more room for yarn, LOL!!!! Very interesting video!!
I think some is the jealousy thing, but I really do see a lot of comments that lead me to believe they just don't get it so they judge it. When you read follow on comments from a lot of people they are the opposite of the person who they are judging and since they are way A they feel it is the best. Person who crafts ways B, C, D... can't possibly be right because A works so well for them... I would actually read her book. There is a lot of great stuff in there to help you visualize your space. The best things I have ever gotten from her though... how to fold t-shirts and undies... LIFE CHANGING! You can tell she is a visual person based on her folding techniques but she doesn't like stuff on display so it has be in the drawer in an effective manner. It works so well for me!
You said it all and it needed to be done . There are some people that have nothing to do but cut people down. I love looking at everyone's craft area and stash. I keep mine in totes. My goal is to have a room to display my items because seeing some color could pop any idea in your head. Health problems and bills have stopped me from doing it. I helped build a room on my old home and I want to physically be involved again. I will do it God willing. Ignore all the jealous haters. They don't have to watch anyone's site. Keep up your work it helps me forget those days I can't get out of bed.
I think that is what gets me. If you don't like it scroll on by... but at the same time, I understand not getting it because someone crafts differently than you do.
I craft like I cook ... I love the tools of the trade, the unique ingredients, the recipes. I approach my crafting the same way - with my collection of thimbles, vintage sewing tools and machines, fabrics that call to me, yarns that jump into my shopping cart 🤷🏻♀️ ... I can spend HOURS browsing patterns, watching videos, printing patterns and filing them into albums. I’m an active and organized crafter, love to start many projects, and eventually finish them all, always planning the next one while in the middle of current ones. I delight in other’s creative abilities and refuse to entertain the critics. I will never be bored ...I should probably put my stash in my Will for someone to appreciate 😂
I love having the right tool for the job. I don't always finish a project right off, I love having choices as I go. But I also love to see how others do it. I find wisdom in most things.
My stash is mine. Sometimes I need retail therapy. Sometimes I see what another has bought and I have perfect pattern for it. A lot of times it makes me get inspired.
I am definitely a supply-driven crafter. Every craft that I do I always have a stash. I make jewelry and art and have stashes for those also. My husband doesn't understand, but as I tell him I will go back and forth between the crafts. I tell him it could be worse I could be a person who collects purses, jewelry, or shoes. I just love supplies. Even when I taught I love buying teaching supplies. Most of my supplies for my craft have been bought when they were on sale. I hate buying things for full price. Thank you for the video it was very informing and now I know why I do what I do.
I have so many mini and macro stashes... LOL! My hubby is 100% an enabler but his kids don't get it... I don't think even my mom gets it 100% but she respects that it works for me. She is also visual with her tools but she isn't inspired the same way I am...
I so love this video! I started building my stash while crocheting for a charity June 2019. I bought tons of clearance yarns to get started. I knew nothing of yarn except Redheart. After looking on TH-cam to find patterns and tutorials, I found there were so many kinds of yarn and different fibers! I also learned there were different hooks besides Boye. I loved the Susan Bates until someone raved over Clover Amour. I tried those and have been hooked every since. I now am out of space and put my yarn in my climate controlled storage unit. I also have accumulated beads, ribbon, and tools for crafting. I use to get a pattern and run out and buy the yarn and put it in a tote to start on. Then, another pattern caught my eye and bought the yarn. I am not organized and get overwhelmed because I can't have my yarn here where I can get to it. So, I buy more yarn! Or, I buy some yarn I have never worked with just to see how it feels or works up. I was moving and put all my things in storage and was staying at my boyfriend's house till my new apartment became available, and before it was ready, my 20 year old daughter and her 2 year old son, my grandson, were in a wreck. She died and he was lifeflighted to Vanderbilt. He had a brain injury, 2 fractured skulls, over 100 stitches in his face, and broken jaw. Miraculously he survived! My daughter had thrown herself over his carseat. They were in a pickup with no backseat. She still had her seatbelt on. She saved his life. I am so proud of her. She was my baby, and only girl. She has 3 older brothers who miss her terribly. Needless to say, I never moved back to my own place. I have been with my boyfriend for 16 years now. I have lived with him the past 4 years since she died. His place isn't big enough for me and my things! Lol! I need a she-shed! Or build a room above the garage. I spend $380 a month just on 2 storage buildings. So, I am going to clear out the units and get rid of what I don't need. Or won't be able to use. Heck, I could have bought a nice she-shed for the 19,200 I have spent on those units in the last 4 years. I did have 3 units, but got rid of most of the other one or put it in one of the other 2 that I kept. Wow, I am rambling! I just want to say THANK YOU for this video!
I WISH I had a stash!! I have a tote bag with leftover skeins that is my starting point, I’m only buying what I need for the project because i don’t have extra funds to buy extra yarn just to have at home. I went through a divorce a few years ago and had to put down the hook because life happened, I’m slowly building it back up but anyways. Grrrr!!! This is why I got off of Facebook, I was in a few crochet groups and they were almost as toxic as the mommy groups. I could not agree with you more about everything you have said!!!I just found your channel today, love your personality! Hope you’re having a great day. ❤️
I like to see others stash. Gives me ideas of how I want to organize my own stash. I’m amazed at those who have a small area and how they make it work for them
Really? i must go around with my eyes shut, how do i miss this maybe its the time zone difference lol...i just don't understand WHY... I never understand why anyone needs to tear anyone else down. I left those kind of people behind a couple of years ago when i left school (just a few years ago) .. I love your honesty and your blog Carrie - you were one of the first i watched!!
Great video ❤
Please forgive me while I have a fan-girl heart attack... Thank you so much!!!!

@@HappyCraftyHomemaker OMG 🥰
Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing! I agree and 100% understand!!!
I love looking at peoples stashes!! Ya I can’t afford yarn all the time but at the same time I love seeing others happy with their craft of choice
I love seeing them! It brings me joy to see other's collections!
I often do the same thing. I find it therapeutic. It's my outlet some people drink or do drugs. I have my yarn. Happy Hooking 😁
I've been doing a lot of charity and Etsy crafting since my health puts me out of work too, it helps keep me motivated and happy ❤ and it's nice to make others happy as well :)
Guarranteed no one EVER told Van Gough, that he had too many shades of yellow. I will never apologize for my fabric and yarn collections. 😊
Exactly!
Yarnie people really love their yarn. To tear apart that person for something they have collected and love is no one elses business. My house has lots of yarn all over. I don't use patterns . I am also the yarn inspired maker. Anyone that has a problem with that can leave.
Amen sister! As my momma would say...don't let the door hit you in the ars on your way out! Lol 😆
There are a lot of us who are supply driven. It always disappoints me to see the mean side of crafters. I love seeing everyone's process.
RIGHT, Stephanie!!! My mom would still beat my rear end if I acted like that.
I love seeing my yarn stash along my walls for inspiration. If i could afford it, i would get more because yarn makes me super happy. 😛
I am out of storage space... But I love it so much! It is so much fun to look at and so much fun to play with!
Thank you!!! That is how I kinda feel about it... I love seeing what people collect and how they show their collections!
You and I are the same kind of creators. Stash inspired, love that. The yarn calls to me, and tells me what it wants to be.
Exactly!!! I always need to see it to use it... how else can the yarn talk to me!
I’m 52, I kept my yarn, fabric, scrapbook stuff, sewing machine, what have you in totes, for years. Until my kids left home. That’s when I got a room, for a craft room. Then Bam! I had a stash! Lol I love looking at stashes!
Great video Carrie!
How your space changes with life is so much fun to keep track of too!!! I mentioned that in my latest "Crafty Chat".
Anyone being rude to anyone for any reason is appalling to me.
Very true... It is something I hope I never understand.
That is a whole other level that I didn't even brush up against!!! 100% a reason to stash and stash wisely!!!
It is MEAN!
You said what I was thinking- Be kind 💜
In this fiber community we are here to encourage each other and lift each other up. ♥️
My mantra for a life well lived is, "Don't be a butthead"... I will never understand the need to be a jerk...
I think this is just good life advice. Be kind to your fellow human. The world is a dark and horrible place.
Loved this rant thank you for speaking up on the craft world see so much negativity in the craft community bring back positivity and encouragement xx
It has been exhausting! I will never understand wanting to live and share misery...
However, I of course, totally respect folk who enjoy building up large collections :)
12:22 I feel I should clarify my situation though. I'm nearly 30 though
14:17 On a more positive note, I DO use a single skein, or a little yarn nugget.
@@HappyCraftyHomemaker sometimes those are the best and most challenging
Yay! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who decides what to knit by looking at my yarn.
Not at all!!! There are a lot of us out here!!!
I totally agree with you! Just be nice as everyone is different and that’s what makes the world interesting. I enjoy seeing other crafters yarn stashes as it gives me inspiration.
Don't be a butt is generally my motto... I never understand why people lash out against someone who just does it differently...
I love that you talk about things that are “touchy” subjects. This is well said❤️ Thank you 😊
Thank you so much!!!
True
I love seeing it all! Big, small, big box, LYS... They are all so much fun to se how they are made with! Respect is a dying art...
Loved how you explained the different type of stash and the process of them
Thank you so much!!!
That
is my process.
I am a live and
let live kind of person .
Hi Carrie, that was very well said. I would love to get tips for building a yarn stash. Thanks for sharing. Have a blessed day.
Hopefully I will get it up tonight or tomorrow. I had to pop out of town for the day so I am a day behind now.
Awesome awesome video!
I am so glad you posted this video. Shaming (no matter what the topic is) is just unnecessary and could quite possibly be harmful. We all just need to revel in people’s differences.
Thank you!!! I agree so much! I hope I never understand the need to bring people down...
It IS fascinating hearing about & seeing other people's stash. You've got me thinking about how I can be more intentional with my purchases. Thank you! 🤗
Thank you! It is an important thing as we grow our stash to be more intentional about what we are buying.
Your yarn wall inspires me, Carrie! There is so much negativity in the world, we as crafters don't need to go around being mean about one another's stash.
Thank you!! There is an this isn't the place for it...
I 100% admire it. It is seems so simple and streamlined! I just can't work that way...
Thank you so much!!! I did get my how to wisely build a stash video up. It is in the Crafty Chat playlist.
I’m so glad you did this video. Feels like you read my mind.
Peg ~
Thank you so much!!!
Hello! I find there are never too many choices when it comes to yarn, lol. The more, the merrier. Love your yarn wall. Thanks for the video.
I am a collector of fine yarns and maker supplies. I might not use them for today's project, but tomorrow... that is a different story.
Thank you! You said it way more tactfully than I ever could have.
LOL! It took a few takes to not sound like I was yelling...
My mom would still tan my hide if she caught me acting out like that...
@@HappyCraftyHomemaker Mine too!
That is something I do less now, but... I do have a pile of WIPs too...
Thank you so much!!! FOMO is real!!! It is worse when you know there is a chance something won't be back again...
Finding organization that works for you is an important part of having a stash and using it well!
Thank you so much sweetie. This video was very much needed and Great. Lots of Hugs to you. 💜💜💜
Thank you!!!
Glad there is someone else out there like me!
Yay.
LOL! Well, welcome to my corner of crazy on the internet!
Great video ! I love to see what others have and what they like to spend on ! Gives me ideas !
Me too!!!
Loved listening to your reasoning. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
this was such an awesome video!!!
Yeah... I really didn't go into all the other crafts that live in my closet... LOL!
Hi Carrie, thank you for doing this video. You're absolutely spot on with what you have discussed in this! Take care lovely 😍
Thank you so much!!!
I think we have a lot of similarities in the making process and feelings on collections!! Well said!
I think so too. In the last two months, you were talking about seeing projects in some of the yarns you were going through and it very much kind of how it happens over here. BTW, that marled neon I love this yarn you are working with keeps telling me it wants to be 5 different things. That is yarn is just so much fun!!!
I love all your yarn. Candy Shoppe is one of my favorite yarns. I'm so bummed that it was discontinued. Self-striping yarn is the best!
I am too. It is such a great yarn and I love how it works up.
I totally agree! I love seeing what draws others in!
Pretty good explanation on stashing!
Thank you
Thank you! I swear I say the same things over and over again!
Ooooh....I wasn’t aware Ravelry even had this feature! I might have to add all my yarn to it!
@@CreativelyTracy You can also look up a yarn on Ravelry and see what projects others have made with it. I love Ravelry.
What a wonderful idea break in to homes of crafters and take their yarn 😂😂😂😂
There are stashes I really want to raid (Teadoddle's fabric stash...) Ross also has some fantastic things hiding in his basement!
I’m just gonna say that I absolutely love the size of your stash 🤩🤩
Oh thank you! I am trying to work it down into a more manageable for me stash, but there is so much in it love and that I love to work with!
Really Miz Penny...what is normal? Your normal is normal to you and ect...LOL I love your space! I LOVE it! I see so many of your yarns that make me want to make. 🤷♀️❤️❤️
Amen!
There are times where I can be project driven but I still stash shop first... I love seeing all the time and it just makes me happy to see it all!
All I can say is THANK YOU.
Thank you so much!!!
Thank you so much! I’m going to show this video to my mom, because I’m done defending my stash 😉
Please do! I think it is always important to share information to those who are into it or not.
Rosie
I would say, you had better post it, but I understand... I can't wait to see it!!!
I love seeing yarn walls!!!
Thank you!!!
You did Great Expressing this Segment. 💚🧶
Thank you so much!!!
I love your yarn Stash. There are people who wish there stash looked like yours don’t let negative people get you down. I’m starting my own little stash.
It is such a personal thing to each maker how they work and how they create.
I ain’t got time for that!! You do you! As always, great video! ❤️
😊 thank you
Like my Mom says ' If you've got nothing nice to say, say nothing!'
Great video. xxJane
Yeah, my momma would still tan my hide if she caught me acting out like that...
Omg great video! New subscriber here. I like your attitude!
Thank you and welcome to my strange little corner of the internet!!!
@@HappyCraftyHomemaker i laughed at your video of opening Cheryls gifts in 2019. Im the biggest dork there is, down to nose in a book and Super Mario video games. I think i will be very happy here 🥸🥳😍
I truely appreciate this video. I have been stash shamed often. I have a yarn room and my process is the same as yours. Thank you for this ❤️
It is so frustrating! I wish more people would take a breath and think before they spoke.
Love you!!! 🧶💕🧶
It is a shame, but hopefully this will help some people who don't get how others craft.
Thanks for sharing! This is a great video!
Thank you!!!
Very well said! Thank you
Thank you so much!!!
Bag o day suggested your video. Great explanation!
Awesome! Thank you! She is beyond amazing!!!
Love what you're saying thank you xxxx
Thank you so much!!!
Me too.
That is quite the story!!! Sweetie!!! HUGS and more HUGS!!!!
I so love your video. When this happens it almost makes you want to quit. Thanks 😊 🙏 😊 for your video.
It can be very disheartening.
Welcome to my corner of crazy on the internet!!!
I like to see others stash. Gives me ideas of how I want to organize my own stash. I’m amazed at those who have a small area and how they make it work for them
Small space organization is so inspiring for me! I love it!!!
Really? i must go around with my eyes shut, how do i miss this maybe its the time zone difference lol...i just don't understand WHY... I never understand why anyone needs to tear anyone else down. I left those kind of people behind a couple of years ago when i left school (just a few years ago) .. I love your honesty and your blog Carrie - you were one of the first i watched!!
AWWWWW!!! Thank you so much!!! I also thought I had left that kind of mean behavior behind when I graduated high school... but... here we are...
