  • Bassai-sho is an advanced Shotokan kata and is the sister kata to Bassai-dai. It is usually practiced at the black belt level. It is a great kata with a lot of technical points that should be studied in detail. This video provides a commentary and demonstration explaining the key points of the kata.

    Comparing several videos while learning this kata, I can now say that technically it's the best video to learn from it.

    Although I practice shito ryu, your video helped me to see some details which both styles have in common regardless of some differences. And there almost no videos of this kata available with detailed explanations. Thanks

    I like your style, don't get me wrong, but you gotta admit that it is a very personal interpretation of the kata... You have adopted a "poetic license" here and in other katas if one compares your movements with Kanazawa's. Or also Kanazawa's style has evolved over the course of the last 15 years and you are correctly reflecting all the changes? I am not trying to be a smart aleck... thanks

    • @jgeorkas
      @jgeorkas 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I guess there is Kanazawa (SKIF) and there is Nakayama (JKA)... that's might be a reason for these differences...

    I find Shotokan Sensei to be excellent teacher and an impressive karateka. I watch both him and Kanazawa to learn my kata.
    One error in this video at 3:40 when he likely gets carried away and misses a few moves including kiai (he went through it the first time and then made the mistake when he continued the kata).

    • @ayisyenkonsekan9964
      @ayisyenkonsekan9964 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope! If you're talking about this kata there are no missed moves, and there's no kiai at 3:40 cause the kata has two kiai and he cried them all both.

    • @chrisheilpern6013
      @chrisheilpern6013 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ayisyenkonsekan9964 No, he did it correctly the first time at 2:50, but when he gets to 3:38 he starts the sequence from the double fist strike, not from the turn after the kiai. It's a minor detail but it threw me off. i presented this kata for my grading so I noticed this. I have come back here now for the 4th Dan kata.

    Sensei what is the meaning of the hand movement end of the kata any bunkai suggestions?

    • @MrMullagan
      @MrMullagan 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Yagami Yasaki for example: attack=migi oi tsuki, defense: left arm is blocking and catching the opponent´s elbow in an armlock, right hand presses opponent´s head back into his neck. Hope I could help you!

    • @yagamiyasaki4091
      @yagamiyasaki4091 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MrMullagan Osu! So you suggest that block gives you something like enpi last movement before kiai?

    • @MrMullagan
      @MrMullagan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Yagami Yasaki That is an interesting (for me actually new) interpretation of the ENPI technik of yours. I should try, if it works!
      I use this armlock also at slow "wipe"-movements in Bassai Dai etc. Where are you training at?

    • @yagamiyasaki4091
      @yagamiyasaki4091 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MrMullagan Im training at my own dojo without senpai, kohai or assistant its really hard that way so i should try to learn source, fundementals, different options, speed, breathing even how to imagine, etc before explain to my students, you can say i really need to make kata on my own before that and wont be problems at the future to do that research deeply then training, training more training only method for me thats the way i choose in my circumstances. I really like skif style and kanazawa sensei thinking and here i am when im stuck :) ahh by the way if enpi movement i suggest new for you i recommend try it with tanto its really more enjoyable that way PS:English not my native so i tried to explain as much as possible but it can be wrong or be senseless sorry about that
