"Two Children Have Died" | Mike Graham Covers New Disease Outbreak

  • Talk's Mike Graham speaks with health expert and broadcaster Rebecca Butler on a new disease outbreak named Giardia.
Two children at a primary school dealing with an infection outbreak have died, health authorities have confirmed.
Both children were pupils at Millstead Primary School in Everton, Liverpool, which teaches children aged two to 11 years.
But the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said a link between their deaths has not been established but both are “unlikely” to be due to a “number of cases” of an infection called Giardia.

i hate to say it with your youtube pic, but it's an amoeba that's everywhere, and puppies get it a lot. It usually just causes a rather unpleasant diarrhoea for a few days, and then the pups are fine. Some don't even stop playing. And yes, there's a simple inexpensive effective treatment for it. If children are dying of Giardia, their immune systems are really messed up by something else....if they're dying of dehydration in this day and age, either the parents or the NHS has been really negligent. All the best to you!

Not really, because it was first recognised in Europe in the 1600s! But yes, it's endemic in many places with poor hygiene, contaminated water sources etc and it seems to spread fast. On the plus side, it's unusual for it to be fatal as effective treatments have been around for decades. Sad to see children needlessly succumbing.

no. It's been in the UK since the 1600's. We (veterinarians) usually see it in puppies....and the pups don't even look that sick...they just have an unpleasant diarrhoea. If kids are dying of Giardiasis, there's something else wrong with their immune systems that's allowing the disease to be much worse than usual. Sad when you consider that there's an effective, inexpensive treatment for Giardia. If they're dying of dehydration in this day and age, the parents and /or the NHS are being really negligent. Your statement is why kids didn't used to have such problems with asthma, either....their immune systems were busy dealing with dirt and germs instead of attacking the lungs. All the best to you!

      Actually - found this
In 2017, 4,793 cases of giardia were reported in England and Wales. Those most at risk of infection include travellers to areas where giardia is common (countries with poor sanitation), young children, men who have sex with men, and people with weakened immune systems for whatever reason.
I definitely know where it came from
At any rate in the USA - swamps and marshes full of animal poop or eating contaminated beaver meat ( hence beaver fever ) or living in a toilet causes it

Im 43. Strong, fit, healthy. After 2 months of sh**ting 7 times a day, i ended up in hospital for 3 days, where they diagnosed Giardia (May 2024). Might not be a new thing, but i was definately not in a good place. Not absorbing ANYTHING is pretty dangerous. Even water caused unbearable cramping. I was treated Metronidozole for 2 weeks but it still took another month for my body to fight back.
However.... i did bring it home from India. So i took that risk with my eyes open!

I think it more than a coincidence that as people from 3rd world countries come to live in UK, in their thousands, these diseases suddenly appear.
It may be an old disease but obviously hasn't been in UK for hundreds of years, if it was ever here in the first place. I've never heard of this disease.
