    Honestly, I thought g6 was the answer (en passant) then you run up and grab a queen and go on from there

      That is a good point, but then we would have to prove that e.p. was possible. That sounds like a good idea for a puzzle!

      @@ChessforCharity I didn’t think of e.p. because what’s the chance that g5 was the last move black played?

    Hi! It's the original creator here! Ben Schultz (aka ska234 on Twitch). This is actually an abridged version of the puzzle. The original version was this: 3k4/8/7p/2p1p1pP/1pPpPpP1/1P1P1P2/N7/2K5 w - - 0 1

    originally this position had the knight on a4, but i moved it to h2 because i thought it was cooler. the puzzle maker told me that the point of the puzzle was that you had to reroute while in the opponents territory to get to the a3 square, but i didn't realize at the time. its still pretty cool how it is though.

      Interesting. So, essentially, this puzzle is an original by you and somebody you know? I wonder to myself, who are these people? (I notice that attributions are rarely, if ever, given on this channel, but surely you don't need to hide your light under a bushel!)
      Cheers, nice puzzle, and thank you to uploader too, if he reads this.

      If I know the source of the puzzle, I put their name in the description of the video. I never want to appear that the puzzle is original to me, so I may have to get better at attributions.

    Sac the knight for Distant opposition as the King has two ways to reach the square, and black has only one.

    @mattt5869 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    9:43 what if they play ...Kg7 followed by Nf5+ Kh7? Then the king is guarding the h6 pawn.

    • @Wintascold
      @Wintascold 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just move your king anywhere which forces blacks king back. Then you can take the pawn on h6

  • @mauijttewaal
    @mauijttewaal 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    the rerouting of the knight can also go via f1-g3-h1-f2-d1-b2-a4 ;-)

  • @daboss8590
    @daboss8590 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I got 17. Kh3 kg7, 18. nh4 gxf4, 19. Kxf4 kf6, 20. G5+ hxg5+ and break through with the h pawn. Not sure if there's a faster way.
    Edit: i was playing against stockfish 8 on lichess, which took the knight on h4. If black doesnt take then best move is king to h8 that way when white plays knight f5 black plays king h7 protecting the h6 pawn. Problem is protecting the h6 pawn allows white to go and take blacks pawns on b4 and c5, allowing a breakthrough on b and c. The four outcomes i see are as follows: black accepts knight sacrifice on a3 and b and/or c pawns get pushed, black accepts knight sacrifice on h4 allowing h pawn to get pushed and whites king inside, black declines knight h4 sac and fails to protect h6, allowing h pawn in, and black does protect h6 but cant protect b4 and c5, allowing those pawns through. Theres no way to protect b4, c5, and h6 once knight gets to f5

    It's the last puzzle on this video: th-cam.com/video/15nuJdAUW0s/w-d-xo.html You actually have it shorter. Depending on where the black king is, you really don't have to move the king all the way to b2 to defend the knight. From your position, I move the king to d2 or d1 just so it's close enough to capture the promoted piece and advance up the a file and win. Stockfish sees you're going to do that, so it doesn't capture the knight on a3, but do watch where the black king is too as the white king might get to b2 on time to capture the promoted piece on a1, black may move the king over to defend the pawn in time and not allow white to capture it. If the black king is on the same file or to the right as the white king, it won't defend on time, if the black king is at least one file to the left of the file the white king is on, then you do have to move the king over to defend the knight.
    When moving the knight back to the king side of the board, shorter would be to first play the king to g2, h3, then play the knight to g2, h4, it saves a king move. Once I got this down packed playing it from St. Louis Chess Club, then I wanted to play it as short as possible, clearing the king from the knight's path early on, and not waste any moves.

  • @snekye5419
    @snekye5419 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    8:30 what about if the black king stays on an adjacent square to play f5 on the turn where you pickup the pawn with the king ? the knight cant "waste a move" and if you try to go back with the king to do some triangle movement the opposite king can do the same.

    • @levinies2187
      @levinies2187 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then you would play g5, temporarily sacrificing the pawn. If black takes, you play Kg4 and win back the pawn

    I got this off of St. Louis Chess Club, only the starting position had the knight on a2, white king on c1, black king on d1, the knight made 3 trips across the white side of the board, 1 breakthrough on the black side before the 3rd trip across, so right away I got this.
