The simplified history of the .303 Brit Cartridge

- The .303 British is a large caliber rifle cartridge that was designed for military use in the late 1800s. Later on the cartridge became a staple for militaries, and hunters within the commonwealth. I actually still hunt on occasion with a chopped up SMLE rifle chambered in .303 British. The history behind the cartridge is interesting, and I thought I would share the simplified history of the .303 Brit.

I hunted with a surplus SMLE. ,303 that I bought in a gun shop when I was 18 years old. I started handloading for the .303 and 56 years later, I still hand load it. I believe it to be one of the greatest cartridges of all time. Also in my opinion, the SMLE is the slickest operating military bolt action ever adopted for military use.

I'm one of those rare American .303 lovers.
Started as a teen when a neighbor loaned me an old surplus .303 to hunt deer with.. I liked that it put power down range at distances, and didnt kick too much for a smaller guy.
A couple decades later, I walked into a hardware store and saw an old Milspec rifle in their rack...
Asked what it was? They didnt know... but thought it might be a
.303....
So guy behind counter opened a box of .303 and chambered one and it fit! they wanted $100 for the rifle, and I walked out the door with it and that box of shells.. Studied the shell that had been chambered when I got home, no marks, checked bullet fit in the end of the muzzle, was correct. And so chambered a round and shot it, then checked the case... was fine...
Found out a few years later its a P-14, and that rifle hits deer.... really good, better than way more expensive rifles.
So, have come to appreciate the cartridge and that rifle... still have it, will go to my sons, and they know what it is, over 100 years old now, Still a deer getter... And if I ever got the chance to hunt ex Brit colony type places, I'll have that rifle.
I wish you were near me. I've a 720 ha farm in Zimbabwe, an African former colony of Britain. Would loved to hunt with you on our property as we got every animal except the big 5 and zebras and I do have a 303

Not likely to ever get to Africa, but as a kid read all the old books on the white hunters... And how the locals depended on them to take out the big cats that got a taste for humans.. it was the African version of you needed a good guy with a gun..
Yeah, I love my P-14... and the .303 cartridge never fails. you just gotta place it. Its ballistically
same-same as a .308, or the Russian Nagant round. In the sweet spot of power and kick, where you dont flinch and hit good. A Gazillion cartridges designed since, that dont work any better.

The 303 was used in the first british combat aircraft and the hurricanes, spitfire, moquitos and MANY MANY MORE

@@bendoingthing my great grandad had the job of using the bren and was considered a expert on it, in his unit during the north Africa campaign.
The old 303 has filled many Canadian freezers with moose, deer and bear meat. Everyone wanted a Winchester, Browning or Husqvarna in .30-06, but the Winchester cost about $150, and a .303 was only $15 and had plenty of power! That left $135 for ammo and other equipment, and so almost every Canadian hunter had at least 1 303 Brit.
When the different Australian states sent troops to the boer war we sent a wide variety of rifles with them.
Many western Australian units took lee speed rifles with them a civilian version of the enfeild rifle.
Many new south Wales units went over with Martini rifles in 450/577 and were issued with enfeild rifles when they arrived in south Africa.
Tasmanian units went over with 303 Martini rifles.

I have a no4 Mk2 that I handload MK7 clone cartridges for. It always blows me away how accurate they are when the powder charge is measured carefully.
Safe to say, 303 Brit will be filling freezers in NZ for years to come.

I have a 1918 SMLE #1mk3 love it. Started reloading as its pretty pricey to soot nowadays.
U forgot that the 303 brit started as a black powder round and that Metford rifling was made for that...........
I glossed over the information, and I did not have enough footage at the time. I will probably remake the video in the future, so that I can include all the facts, and correct any that may be wrong.

Well not a moa ! Rifle! But a lot of hunting in NZ still happening in the bush mate ! And even though No4T was a rested 2moa rifle ! That’s plenty if you know what you’re doing!
Ive got about 500 rounds of the ordinal mk4 rounds they shoot better in my 303 martini than my mk3 or mk4

I'm from the US and have had a No1 Mk4 for about 40 years. I paid 60 dollars for it. Took my first deer with it, one shot and it dropped. Manufacture date is 1942. I would love to find out the history of this rifle.

For THE LOVE OF GOD, don’t accidentally fire a vIII lol even with a heavy barrel, I’d be hesitating. They were made for light machine guns lol
The only difference is the light machine gun is not a bolt action the barel on the lee Enfields is designed to use 303 ammunition in it mate🇦🇺
