No other reaction has noticed the circus elements of this song yet! Thank you!
Part of your comment reminds me of another issue the internet has caused; we constantly worry about what other people think (which happened before on a MUCH smaller level and scale). Anonymous strangers can post pretty much whatever they want about other people. I think its also caused many people to be overly-obsessive about many things as well. I'm not religious at all, but it makes me think of the tree of knowledge of good and evil; people are much more aware of "evil" in the world thats always been there. People try way to hard now to virtue-signal to the rest of the world and act as though theyre "good" people and they have the perfect life, when theyre really not any different than everyone else.
It is a bit like the Internet from American God's, except Gaiman wrote it on 2001, so his character is a representation of the Internet back then, before any social media stuff.
Am I the only one who's picked up on the break being another performance, that it's constructed to make you engage with the false sincerity because the moment I watched this and he started laughing I felt the mockery of "oh you thought that was real" and then the laugh becomes unhinged like made you fall for one more trick it had up its sleeve. I can't be the only one right?
in the slow part he was tenderly speaking about the 2 year old using the ipad.. so yeah he's laughing because tech companies want to suck our souls, our attention makes ads more valuable.. social media is just advertisement and pay per click
@@OmfgHiii I'm not saying that's wrong I mean even the authenticity of the statements are false and the real truth is so insidious he just starts laughing. I'm saying its a triple not just the inverse and said.
I understand where you’re coming from, to me I think the funny juxtaposition is that the character of the internet genuinely loves them for being passive and able to be manipulated
@@seanathanfitz7887 that's what I was thinking. His character IS the internet, and I think that soft bit was there to represent a person's introduction to the internet. The tone, the lyrics, followed by that EPIC menacing laughter.
One thing I think you missed is this song compositionally is genius for the reason of the accelerating tempo gives you the feeling of being constantly bombarded with information, which is exactly what the internet is. It's a constant bombardment of information from all angles. It's actually so fast that you can't think about it, and you even miss some of it. This song starts off with the sense of innocence and like navigating the internet is easy, and it soon becomes overwhelming. And then you find the sinister undertones of the effect of the internet toward the end of the song.
@@f0il3d_gg65 No, they didn't. They simply picked apart his tempo and instrumentation, but they missed the fact that he's using music as a way to actually give the sense of the constant bombardment that the internet gives.
As someone once said.. “The Internet is the best and worst thing humanity has every created.” For example, the parents of this generation don’t understand why their kids are so absorbed in their devices because they didn’t grow up with that so therefore they don’t know how to help. They try to use the things that their parents taught them, but it doesn’t work because it’s not the same thing, it’s a completely different issue. Which leads to conflict and parents guilt tripping their kids and pointing out they’re addicted to their devices and making them feel like they’re the only people in the world with this issue. We are the very first generation with the particular problem and are the first of many more to come. *And that personally scares me.*
He's portraying the internet as the villain speaking to Gen-Zers. They are hooked since they were two. He's evil saying its trapped us all and there's no way to put the genie back in the bottle.
Burnham has always been upfront with how much of a perfectionist he is with his art. He started on TH-cam where you can fix and perfect. I personally think that is why he would have panic attacks at live shows. You can't stop, delete, and retake at a life performance. His Netflix special, "Inside," also shows his precision. It shows clips of him working behind the scenes. I really hope him and his partner are doing well.
I can definitely relate! Perfectionism has good intentions behind it, but can often be an artist's downfall as well. In the end the little imperfections and differences in each performance are the reason why people pay to come to live shows rather than just listening to the studio version. It's about seeing that performer as a human, "warts and all".
I seriously think he perfected his look on how to make catchy trendy music. Simultaneously pouring his own emotions into it. The entire special is perfection . A rollercoaster of emotions.
I watched this before to listen to the song in general, but I never really thought about it. He is literally symbolizing to us the stages in which the internet hypnotizes you. First stage, just trying to convince you calmly with a few reasons. Second stage, showing you more stuff so you go back for more and more. Final stage… it’s far too late. You’ve been grasped in by the internet and now you are on it every second of every minute of every hour of every day of every week of every month of every year for the rest of your life.
Something that I like about the ending is that there's not a stinger note at the end. I feel like most people have come to expect there to be one more note at the end, but Bo leaves this silence almost like dead air. Because people expect that stinger note that doesn't happen, it leaves more of that uneasy feeling that the song has been giving us the whole time.
But neither of you guys are listening to the lyrics. That’s the important part. Not just the theatrics. It’s about how it’s made to get young kids addicted, and now that they are, there’s nothing they can do. It’s a part of their culture now. Being bored is now impossible, as they have technology since they were raised with an IPad. Hear the lyrics. The theatrics adds to it afterwords, and make it much more better to the viewer.
@@oogatz1917 I hear what you’re saying, but to remember the lyric, “you know you like it you whore” and completely miss “see a man beheaded” or “DM a girl and groom her” immediately after shows that they weren’t really paying attention. They also laughed and talked over a good portion of the song.
The best part of the middle section in my opinion is the perspective of it. I remember back in the early days of tablet and smart phone development the key focus was to develop an interface that a "baby could navigate" (I don't recall exactly where I first heard that but it stuck with me). It was amazing to see the first smart phone interface, and how easy it was to use. Back then I thought it was just another generation improvement of technology; something that would improve quality of life. But I think here in this musical segment he sees it another way, as an intentional, deliberate, patient approach at targeting Gen-Z youth and groom them to becoming content providers. The line "unstoppable, *watchable*" and describing them as "insatiable" is on the nose. The whole point was to groom the children from the early 2000's into the internet-addicted, content providing subjects they are today.
This was such a beautiful video! I loved your comments and insights. I can tell you have a great deal of knowledge in your respective fields, and still the video was not a lecture--just a fun chat where you shared what you know and felt
It’s so funny because the way the song is hitting you is the way the internet hits everyone (“it goes by so fast i can’t even pick it all up”, “i can’t get it out of my head”) Also, best reaction video to something Bo Burnham in a long time! you guys picked up all the best stuff on the first view
I've never considered, nor seen anyone else describe the juxtaposition between the antiquated music and the futuristic topic. Very good observation there, great, intelligent reaction.
I don't mind the pauses at all, but you guys should go back 5 seconds everytime you pause, that way you won't cut anything from the original video or break it up as much
What's amazing is that he did the camera setup, the lighting setup, the lighting control, and everything else all by himself in one room. I'd recommend doing "White Woman's Instagram" next, that one gets stuck in my head. A suggestion on reacting - after pausing, back it up a few seconds when you resume just so we know you aren't missing any good lines.
This movie blew my mind and I was so impressed with how much love and work Bo put into the special and you guys are asking smart questions I didn't even think of lol. Like when you and your husband asked if he edited the vaccination joke in one take or multiple. It's insane that he did all of this by himself.
Probably because they’re not there to analyze the lyrics they’re there to analyze the musicality and the visuals. analyzing lyrics is a whole other thing
probably the best breakdown of this song i've heard. no, thinking about it, it IS the best breakdown, because you mentioned stuff i haven't noticed after several watches. Kudos.
If you pause. Before you push play again rewind 5sec. It's a practice I saw others doing and I really liked it. Helps you not cut out a word accidentally.
I also feel like the speeding up and him throwing internet related things at you faster and faster and you trying to process the jokes while he's onto the next is also symbolic of how society is still trying to process all of this new technology that keeps coming into our lives and we still havent fully processed how it's effecting us and the next thing gets here before we're even ready for it. Or maybe not lol
The speeding up for me comes across as scrolling faster and faster. And the cutting starting at “He’s a healthy Breakfast Option” is like pop-up ads. Also I love that the zoom was matched perfectly on both sides with the “vaccinate your kids” keeping the pace of the shot pushing in on him.
His whole performance is brilliant! But that evil laugh gives me chills every time..! He does it so perfectly, he could voice the role of a great Disney villain!
I love the way you put the lyrics and show how he controls the melody. This is the visual to how I see lyrics when I try to break songs down. I'm glad I'm not the only one to do this.
Suggestion, get a headphone splitter so you’re both listening to the audio in stereo as intended. You’re both missing a lot of the audio that is hard panned left or right.
This is probably my favorite track in the special because of how crazy existential it is and it conveys every single thing about the internet and how it really could be a problem for these generations or something great . No I’m between. It’s amazing
Just found this channel and wow, really high quality content here. As weird or odd as it seems to say, the room you film in is beautiful and the video was made with super high quality and I loved both you and your husbands’ takes and perspectives on this music video. What an absolutely amazing performance from Bo and an amazing reaction and analysis from you guys. You have definitely earned a subscription from me and I will continue to look out from more content from you!
with the line "your time is now, your insides out" I believe, it means that peoples true self comes out on the internet, the "inside" comes out with no filter because most of the time there are no consequences like you can put on a mask in front of people but as soon as a thing comes in were they have no idea who you are their true self shows
You are already better than most reaction tubers, and I have only seen this video. You mentioned this is the 1st/2nd reaction video you have done so here is the shit sandwich (compliment, criticisms, complement) [assuming you want critique, if not then ignore the rest of this post and know that I think you are doing a fantastic job]: 1) I LOVE the way you do the subtitles above the video. 2) having multiple people in a reaction video is a good thing because it allows you to bounce your feelings off each other. Yall do a good job of taking advantage of that. 3) rewind after a pause. when you go back after a pause rewind a few seconds so the audience (and yourself) are reminded where we are in the video 4) don't talk over the video. I know it is organic but the audience wants you to see the whole thing and not miss a second 5) I really like how you focused on the whole production (lyrics, the "set", music analysis, and stagecraft). most "vocal coaches" channels focus on just that aspect, this is a great changeup from that.
I like this movie because it’s just him making a Live show without it actually being live. He made this solo in one room the whole time and it’s great. Plus he kinda made it like if someone recorded a behind the scenes movie, and instead of using the movie he used the behind the scenes footage as the movie. If you haven’t watched it I recommend it
The thing that gets me is that he uses a voice modulator in this song that causes his voice to sound just SLIGHTLY robotic. Especially noticeable during 5:40 where he sounds like he's trying to be almost sympathetic. I think the purpose of that is that it gives this slight air of unease, like it's all manufactured. Because it is. The internet gives 0 fucks about you, as long as you engage.
You can see the shadows of the other cameras in the special. I'm sure he rehearsed quite a bit, but just like his live shows, he does this in one take, and he does the effects live.
The sincere sounding slow ballad in the middle of the song ending in an evil laugh really hit me. I think it was showing how even when you find a honest heartfelt moment in the internet, it's really just another ploy to draw in your attention. BTW, I think your analysis is one of the best I've seen so far and I've been on a binge. It's insightful and fun. You caught most of the things I did after several playthroughs and still had new things to point out.
this is the most considerate reaction ive ever seen on youtube. yknow what? fuck Bo... lets praise these guys on the massive respect they have for the platfor Bo uses and the absolute transparency they use while reacting... kudos to you.
So I watch his videos & am just blown away by how he always is hitting you with one feeling then the opposite feeling & you can be laughing your ass off, one second & the next, you can feel called out for thinking what he just said. He's obviously incredibly talented but your video really made me think about how much had to have gone into this. We already know he is kind of a one man show but understanding that he's like a master at lighting, piano, writing, singing, videoing, choreography... it's just mindblowing.
God the song just embeds itself into your head. I can't get it out once you hear it and when you try to stop it just keeps pulling you in. It is a masterpiece among masterpieces.
Yes absolutely pause and commentate , nothing to get triggered over ...it shows the difference between analysing, "reactions" and sitting there like cardboard just staring blankly at the whole content. And Bo's work is so dense with references and analysis food that people can talk about it for hours...great vid.
My favourite part of the the quick juxtaposition is how it represents the actual internet experience so well, but in a way that you don't really think about until they're put together like this. "Here's a tip for straining pasta here's a nine year old that died" sounds shocking (when your brain catches up) when put together in song, but we really do scroll past dead children and buzzfeed food videos right next to each other and never really think about it. The fact it's so fast it takes a second for your brain to catch up and you miss half the things he's saying on the first pass are also very representative of the way it feels to be scrolling on the internet. So much information that you literally can't take it all in. Somehow he both makes the song feel like what the internet feels like, but also presents it in a way that communicates the shocking nature of the internet to the viewer who is already numb to it. It's a really delicate balance and he manages it so well.
I love that just before the laugh when he turns off the background lights, right when he clicks the button all the sound stops even the wisps of reverb, so the laugh is completely dry which makes it even more sinister and feels closer to you.
I like that this channel admits its both a reaction AND analysis, so you don't pretend it's a first time viewing. I've seen other channels that have clearly seen/heard it before, and maybe even watched other analyses, but then try to present their research as if it's a first time reaction.
It was all filmed at once< I think - you can see the cameras for the different angles set up around him just outside of the spotlight. So, presumably, this was done all in one run. Really adds to it imo! So fantastically well done.
It's got some poetical quality that I have stumbled across your channel, watching this video, taken from a special lamenting the existence of precisely the content just like in this video. I need a break. I've got this funny feeling again.
All the info is short and quickly skipped past, and the tempo just keeps increasing. Very symbolic of how we engage with the internet and the effects of people's mental health.
Heya, as a Vocal Coach could you please please review Jacob Colliers Moon River, it was grammy award winning for vocal arrangement and I would absolutely love to hear your take on it!! 😊
Why does everyone seem to fail to catch that he's singing to middle schoolers? He's the personification of the internet, talking to the adolescents of 2021. Any time he's saying "you" it isn't you, the adult viewer. It's to kids right now, whose entire lives have been shaped by the internet. Kids who were "barely 2" when iPads came out. He literally made a movie about eighth grade. Why is this so hard to pick up on?
I’m relatively young but I get the old Willy wonka movie vibe nearing the end of the video because of the menacing colors and green dots, which reminds me of the scene where the contestants are on the paddle boat and Mr.wonka is doing the creepy rhyme.
This is Bo as The Internet addressing everyone and everything (but mainly Gen Zers). At the end its the internet remembering that apathy is a crime but if apathy is a crime so is empathy and its just devolving into what the internet is today, pure chaos. We have a little bit of everything all of the time and its a pure chaos machine in our hands or pockets or laps 24/7/365.
The editing on the quick shots of him was so precise because he shot it in one take (Not his first take i'm sure), but def in one take. He has multiple cameras all around him that he was looking at that were filming simultaneously.
it’s actually even crazier than that. rewatch the video and look into his glasses. He used one camera and insane camera tricks with reflections to get those shots from the one camera in front of him. Bo is a creative genius.
Just want to say the thing to the left of the screen? The moment I noticed it I couldn't stop looking at it. Forget the video for a sec, I had to watch it again after. But that animated frame thing? Nostalgia and other good things. Also it keep doing things and my brain can't compute when shiny go blink-blink.
I've said it before but I think what makes the difference between A grade & S is when you can show a something to multiple different people of different backgrounds & professions & each one of them can give a different incite on why each specific element is amazing to them.
I'm fairly confident he did this all in one shot, not just because of the quality of it, but because at this point he probably wanted to do a live show and likely wanted to do the preparation that's involved in it, such as getting it all in one take for the best performance possible (since you can't edit good takes in real life performance).
I really enjoyed your reaction. Getting an opinion by two different proffesionals is so interesting, but I also enjoyed the honest reaction. I actually like it that you pause to give your opinions. Good job!

Plays like a Disney villain victory song to me.
Actually they referred that more than once
But they did say that? Around 2:40 they start talking about it.
@@f0il3d_gg65 No, they didn't. They simply picked apart his tempo and instrumentation, but they missed the fact that he's using music as a way to actually give the sense of the constant bombardment that the internet gives.
As someone once said..
“The Internet is the best and worst thing humanity has every created.”
For example, the parents of this generation don’t understand why their kids are so absorbed in their devices because they didn’t grow up with that so therefore they don’t know how to help.
Very true!! About parents and children, I think open communication is key!
during the harry potter part I feel like bo was about to laugh at his own joke.
If I was in his place I would
Fun fact. He did it all by himself.
mom said it's my turn to get first reply

@@john-um9hlis that John Constantine?
That's a great interpretation!
I thought the same. It left me with a hollow, empty feeling.
Well to be fair they’re looking at it more from a musical standpoint not really the lyrics and from a visual standpoint.
@@Piktro that’s fair
How do you not get bored? Not everything in the internet is interesting
@Quantum Spork i see, thankyou for the explanation its well made. Enjoyable too
Currently in a rabbit hole of watching people react to this song. This is the best one so far. Great work ❤️
Anything and everything all of the time
Rewind after pausing.
Rewind after pausing.
Rewind after pausing.
Rewind after pausing.
Rewind after pausing...
The only way a person wrote this is if its disingenuous and a favor to the poster
Was waiting for this one. I think we all were.
This isnt him singing about the internet. This is the internet singing TO you
"I can't get it out of my head. It haunts me..."
Yeah, sister, same. ❤
It’s so funny because the way the song is hitting you is the way the internet hits everyone (“it goes by so fast i can’t even pick it all up”, “i can’t get it out of my head”)
Also, best reaction video to something Bo Burnham in a long time! you guys picked up all the best stuff on the first view
“It was always the plan. to put the world in your hand" and then the evil laughter. Reminds me of all the manipulation from media
I've never considered, nor seen anyone else describe the juxtaposition between the antiquated music and the futuristic topic. Very good observation there, great, intelligent reaction.
This entire special is a masterpiece,
I don't mind the pauses at all, but you guys should go back 5 seconds everytime you pause, that way you won't cut anything from the original video or break it up as much
What's amazing is that he did the camera setup, the lighting setup, the lighting control, and everything else all by himself in one room. I'd recommend doing "White Woman's Instagram" next, that one gets stuck in my head.
A suggestion on reacting - after pausing, back it up a few seconds when you resume just so we know you aren't missing any good lines.
It's also amazing that he's controlling the light etc all live with a little remote
This movie blew my mind and I was so impressed with how much love and work Bo put into the special and you guys are asking smart questions I didn't even think of lol. Like when you and your husband asked if he edited the vaccination joke in one take or multiple. It's insane that he did all of this by himself.
How can you pay so much attention and still miss the entire point of the video.
Maybe they're too old?
Probably because they’re not there to analyze the lyrics they’re there to analyze the musicality and the visuals. analyzing lyrics is a whole other thing
Yeah it really seemed like they just didn’t give a shit about the actual song
Right like the girl grinning the entire time is so frustrating to watch... like it’s not all a humorous song?
yeah how can you make a carrier of understanding music and miss the meaning in songs?
probably the best breakdown of this song i've heard. no, thinking about it, it IS the best breakdown, because you mentioned stuff i haven't noticed after several watches. Kudos.
This means a lot, Beth. Thank you so much! :)
Loved your reaction, always great seeing what other people think.
Thanks for watching! Have a great 2022 💜
His whole performance is brilliant! But that evil laugh gives me chills every time..! He does it so perfectly, he could voice the role of a great Disney villain!
Honestly you're one of the only reaction channels that I respect because they actually give good insight and make the video better
I'm glad you find my content unique and valuable! 💜
He went straight up Disney villan... Amazing
with the line "your time is now, your insides out" I believe, it means that peoples true self comes out on the internet, the "inside" comes out with no filter because most of the time there are no consequences like you can put on a mask in front of people but as soon as a thing comes in were they have no idea who you are their true self shows
You are already better than most reaction tubers, and I have only seen this video. You mentioned this is the 1st/2nd reaction video you have done so here is the shit sandwich (compliment, criticisms, complement) [assuming you want critique, if not then ignore the rest of this post and know that I think you are doing a fantastic job]:
1) I LOVE the way you do the subtitles above the video.
2) having multiple people in a reaction video is a good thing because it allows you to bounce your feelings off each other. Yall do a good job of taking advantage of that.
3) rewind after a pause. when you go back after a pause rewind a few seconds so the audience (and yourself) are reminded where we are in the video
4) don't talk over the video. I know it is organic but the audience wants you to see the whole thing and not miss a second
5) I really like how you focused on the whole production (lyrics, the "set", music analysis, and stagecraft). most "vocal coaches" channels focus on just that aspect, this is a great changeup from that.
I like this movie because it’s just him making a Live show without it actually being live.
He made this solo in one room the whole time and it’s great. Plus he kinda made it like if someone recorded a behind the scenes movie, and instead of using the movie he used the behind the scenes footage as the movie. If you haven’t watched it I recommend it
Bo is an absolute musical genius and an amazing performer. I especially love his laugh if insanity
Agreed! Brilliant!!🙌🏽
I have this (along with a few others from the special) on my daily playlist 😆
You can see the shadows of the other cameras in the special. I'm sure he rehearsed quite a bit, but just like his live shows, he does this in one take, and he does the effects live.
The sincere sounding slow ballad in the middle of the song ending in an evil laugh really hit me. I think it was showing how even when you find a honest heartfelt moment in the internet, it's really just another ploy to draw in your attention.
BTW, I think your analysis is one of the best I've seen so far and I've been on a binge. It's insightful and fun. You caught most of the things I did after several playthroughs and still had new things to point out.
Love the analysis and insights, other reaction channels could learn a thing or two from your video's structure
I really appreciate that, thank you!
he isnt talking to the internet ...he is talking AS the internet
The internet go from some cool songs and funny stuff the dark and depressing in a blink of an eye, if your wifi is fast enough
It's so hard to catch every little line but when you do you realize the musical talent that went into this!
This reminds me of Bo’s reaction video of himself, lmao
He is the internet talking to you.
Its so refreshing to see actual analysis.
I promise I am listening to what you’re saying, but man the subtitles are so hypnotising to watch (it’s awesome)
“is he calling me a whore?”
**laughs uncomfortably**
This is the best breakdown of the mise en place and stylistic intent out there, thanks!
this is the most considerate reaction ive ever seen on youtube. yknow what? fuck Bo... lets praise these guys on the massive respect they have for the platfor Bo uses and the absolute transparency they use while reacting... kudos to you.
Love your insights, this was such an incredible special it makes me feel inferior, like nothing I could ever create could be that we'll thought out.
God the song just embeds itself into your head. I can't get it out once you hear it and when you try to stop it just keeps pulling you in. It is a masterpiece among masterpieces.
I think my favourite line will always be: "Send us pictures of your children, tell us every thought you think" It is so real.
Really enjoyed the perspective you both brought and the fact that the comments were engaging and relevant. Great content!
Been watching this dude since his vine days he is a legend indeed
I don't know where I heard it, but that laugh is the laugh of the villain who's already won.
I think the speed and tempo gives you a feeling of pop ups on the internet
You will have to do Bo's "Can't handle this" next!! It is the last song from his last special 5 years ago, which he references in this song.
It's got some poetical quality that I have stumbled across your channel, watching this video, taken from a special lamenting the existence of precisely the content just like in this video. I need a break. I've got this funny feeling again.
his rising speed of his tempo is just exemplify the speed of the internet
I've always watched the gentleman wake what a happy surprise
I had this song stuck in my head for like a month.
All the info is short and quickly skipped past, and the tempo just keeps increasing. Very symbolic of how we engage with the internet and the effects of people's mental health.
Of many reactions I've seen to this, I liked this a lot.
Feel like you guys didn’t really get it..
I’m relatively young but I get the old Willy wonka movie vibe nearing the end of the video because of the menacing colors and green dots, which reminds me of the scene where the contestants are on the paddle boat and Mr.wonka is doing the creepy rhyme.
Your analysis was more satisfying than any review I read. Thank you.
@@SabreJ6 damn i did rewatch it and youre right! absolute legend
Just want to say the thing to the left of the screen? The moment I noticed it I couldn't stop looking at it. Forget the video for a sec, I had to watch it again after. But that animated frame thing? Nostalgia and other good things. Also it keep doing things and my brain can't compute when shiny go blink-blink.
musical rollercoaster if ive ever heard one I love it
I've said it before but I think what makes the difference between A grade & S is when you can show a something to multiple different people of different backgrounds & professions & each one of them can give a different incite on why each specific element is amazing to them.
Got a little pissed when you skipped the laughter I really wanted to see your faces when he did
I'm fairly confident he did this all in one shot, not just because of the quality of it, but because at this point he probably wanted to do a live show and likely wanted to do the preparation that's involved in it, such as getting it all in one take for the best performance possible (since you can't edit good takes in real life performance).
I really enjoyed your reaction. Getting an opinion by two different proffesionals is so interesting, but I also enjoyed the honest reaction. I actually like it that you pause to give your opinions. Good job!
