You gotta realize that he has a wive and had her also during that time. He wasn't alone during making of the special. But the character he depicts, was. He's showing someone who was locked in his room, and also in his head for a long time. It's not necessarily Bo himself, there are a lot of these people out there. He's just playing a role.

“Apathy’s a tragedy, and boredom is a crime.”
In other words, you’re not allowed to not have an opinion or feeling about any given subject, and you’re not allowed to not be perpetually engaged with the infinite sources of engagement.
I love that the song is portrayed as if the internet is a villainous Carnival Barker, trying to draw you in and sell you on the mysteries and oddities behind the curtain, which were often falsehoods, deceptions, and tricks that were created for the sake of profiting off of people’s curiosity.

What I REALLY like about this song is that it perfectly shows that dopamine rush you get on the internet at the end, like you were talking about, with all the sound effects and amped-up music, only to end it so abruptly you feel disappointed. Like what the internet does to you once you get off of it.

Yay!!!! Getting to watch someone witness Bo for the first time is just…the fucking best. And also watching someone who seems to really “get it” is a breath of fresh air.
He’s about as close to an auteur as it gets and on a whole other level in terms of self awareness and societal commentary.
He’s always been very open about his struggles with mental health. If you want to start down that specific rabbit hole (yes there are multiple rabbit holes with Bo) I recommend reacting to these songs. They’re listed in chronological order but don’t have to be viewed as such:
    Art is Dead
    Sad
    Left Brain, Right Brain
    #Deep
    We Think we Know You
Kill Yourself (make sure you watch the intro/outro for proper context)
    Can’t Handle this (Kanye Rant)
    Are you Happy?
All Eyes on Me (this one is a MUST watch either directly before or after the Kanye Rant, because they’re tied together thematically)
    That Funny Feeling
    GoodBye
Awesome reaction/breakdown! Subbed for more Bo reactions!!!

I love how when he started talking about how the internet used to be the tone of the song slowed down just like our lives do when we get of the internet. Then the Disney villain ahh laugh could be a metaphor for how even though the internet was created to be a good thing it got out of control and it's pristine internations where dragged across the mud. Then when he did get on the internet once again the song sped up and became even more crazy.
Beautiful metaphors for me, truly Chef's kiss

    1. Great reaction and interpretation , Bo Burnham is so talented.
    2. I definetly agree with you on the absurdity of how much technology has taken over. I’m GenZ, born in the year 2000, and it’s so strange seeing how large a jump it has made even from 2000 to 2010 and now further to 2020.
Like I and all of my peers didn’t get our first phones until we were at least 10 (not smartphone, just a phone, just for calling, you’re lucky if it had any other feature)(my first one was a Sony Ericsson W200i which I got from my mother after she got her new Nokia, it’s nothing compared to the iPhone I have now, but it served me well, and I kinda miss its simplicity/limitations), got my first smartphone and pc (the only computers we had in the house was my parents work ones) at 13.
And now, there’s kids that are born and seemingly get a tablet shoved in their face as soon as possible and it’s utterly tragic, like yes times change and you at this point can’t shut that off completely, our society doesn’t allow that, but there’s way to limit it, and hopefully as long as possible.

I've been listening to Bo Burnham since 2010 and I'm so glad to see you reacting to his content. I think he is one of the most intelligent comedians. Absolute genius. Side story, he began singing on TH-cam songs that he would send to his older brother away at college (songs like: "my other half" and "my whole family thinks I'm gay" and "new math"). Then slowly he got more popular and began making specials. Recommendations: Art is dead, Repeat Stuff, God's Perspective, Sad, and Rant. The Rant song from his last special really touches on his personal struggles and it discusses whether he is truly happy. It ties right into the "Are you happy" song also, just saying how he puts on performances to please the audience, but he is slowly trying to not lose his sanity. Deep stuff for sure. Keep up the great work Tom!

As someone born in gen z, and only in middle school, I started realizing how crazy and mind killing the internet was at around 10. so i told myself, "damn...i really need to remove myself from this." Now, I have started giving myself increasing restrictions on electronics, and, its already got to me. It may just be my insomnia, but, i always have to watch..Bob Ross, before i go to bed or else i have nightmares that feel like i just had 2 pounds of weed. Ok maybe too much but you get what i mean. But, recently i started forcing myself to not have most of my electronics for a month. By December, i will be on a restriction of no electronics at all for possibly over a month. I started going outside to research the nature around me. I've always been interested in nature and biology, so I felt comfortable doing this. I got a bird feeder, and i also take photos of birds sometimes. And i realize even more about the society killing internet every school day. Every class, some kid has to start screaming everything he saw on tiktok and how he played this game all night, etc. And Im just thinking, "Damn, could you not start moaning in the middle of class?" Yes, moaning. i dont know if this always happened, but i doubt it. I live in a very small family in the deep south, living with my grandparent, just 1, my grandmother. My parents were on drugs. My mother was quite nice though. Yet, She's still a smoker.
(Also, on a less serious note, Bob Ross is calming as hell, ok?)

Good reaction. I also found the line about “all the things we designed it to do” really chilling. Without going full conspiracy theory I think Bo is right that in some sense the tech people who got in at the ground floor with the internet very much planned this, at least some of them. Probably no one in 1999 was specifically imagining TH-cam or Twitter but they saw the potential for monetisation and that was what drove the advances in the tech, and now here we are. We have walked with our eyes closed into a really weird and dangerous place, and these Silicon Valley “salamanders” (as Bo calls them) led us here on purpose.

I never trawled through YT as I do now, I never watched anime on a website (didn't even know what anime was), and I also rarely posted anything. It also might keep speeding up because everything we watch nowadays like TikTok or TH-cam Shorts are a few seconds long, and videos go down in size as the internet developed because everyone won’t watch something that’s 4 hours long, but that was short for people who used to sit and watch operas and plays and theatre for 8 hours straight. It’s speeding up, letting our attention span weaken and shorten, and changing pace to keep up with what we WOULD watch and listen to.

I grew up in the 90's, and it had a minor effect on me as a kid, and I grew up to be a web developer. But dang, people Bo's age and younger had it more involved in their youth. My eldest niece is only 6 and mainlining "kid friendly internet" unless she's in trouble. I don't think we are actually going to do better by getting away from, other than for short-term recuperation, the current internet. Because of where the trends are leading, we might need to find a new unprecedented homeostasis. There's a new mental orientation that needs to come into existence for the world. I have Autism and ADHD, I can't really help neurotypical people. With ASD and ADHD I'm actually naturally well suited for the ecosystem developing. If you are well versed thinking critically you should find a way to lean in that still let's you sleep at night. The problem is that over half the people who claim that they are versed in critical thinking are anti-vaxxers, flat earthers, or something similarly stupid. I remember childhood days spent at the library or just biking around my small town or hanging out with my friends and playing a little bit of PlayStation, maybe reenact Jurassic Park, or just whatever. I remember being able to focus on just a single task. Now everything's so fast and I nearly always need to be watching something or listening to something while playing a game if I'm on the computer. I can still slow down and read a book for a couple hours, but yeah, it's getting harder to step away from all the screens in our lives. You have no idea that you've gotten yourself into another rabbit hole... This song is part of his most recent special he has written, shot, edited and produced for Netflix all by himself, in his place during the pandemic. It's called "Inside"and definitely has some bangers and laughing-out-loud songs, but the overall tone and concept of this project is very self-observing, dealing with isolation, mental health and self-esteem on all scales. This special is an work of art and has to be seen in its entirety, but "comedy"+"goodbye" as a follow-up is a good start. "all eyes on me" is also essential, because it ties in a bit of his back story.
He started out on TH-cam before it became a thing, has shown his musical talent and comedy writing from a young age, but also tested the boundaries with some content, that would have been cancelled, if posted today. I hold them dear to my heart nonetheless. So, if you'd like to go back a bit further, let's start with something more "Tom approved" stuff. Overall, I'd love to see your take on "From God's perspective, "Left brain, Right brain", "Sad", "Lower you Expectations", "Kill Yourself" (song title), and the list goes on (not a particular order).
My personal favorite, but kind of for advanced Bo listeners: "Can't handle this (Kanye Rant)". Anyway, you can't really go wrong with any of Bo's song, if you prepare yourself for some twists and turns.
I'm excited to see some Bo Burnham on here. He helped me a lot. Love your reactions!

Personifying the zeitgeist of the Internet as a demented, Machiavellian carnival barker wasn't enough just on its own as a gag, he wrote a genius composition using varied speed and tempo to keep the audience off-balance and easily dragged along when the score ramps up. Just genius. I remember watching Bo when he was uploading to TH-cam from his room in his parent's house in the late '00s, and he was already incredibly clever, but this song just stands on its own among his works. his anxiety was during every show. the shows and feeling like he had to perform were crushing him.
also, brains that aren't developed yet is when technology needs to be introduced and mastered. its like language, after a certain age learning it is MUCH more work. what you need is a balance between the insanity of the web and stability of living in the mainframe.

It's kinda interesting to me about what you said about getting depression when hoping out of the internet.
I was born in 98' and as such I'm considered a Millenial but at the same time I grew up in Poland where the tech advancement was kinda slow so I wasn't growing up with all the technology immediately. It came up slow.
Now when i go on holidays and cut off of my PC and phone and just lay down outside in my yard I'm happy just looking into the sky completely chilling and listening to some calm music. Nothing in this world gives me a better feeling of happines than this

Bo Burnham is almost certainly one of the most brilliant entertainers of this generation. He’s as much a philosopher as a musician and comedian. His specials are very thoroughly thought out so you lose a little bit just watching individual songs than what you get from watching the entire special, but the songs are still great.
IMO People should start with some of his older/lighter stuff to get a feel for him, otherwise a lot of people miss out on some of the depth and nuance to what he’s saying.
So I’d suggest something like the following:
    Country Song
    Eat a Dick
    Art is Dead
    Left Brain/Right Brain
    Sad
    How the World Works
    Welcome to the Internet
    We Think We Know You
    Are You Happy?
    Can’t Handle This (Kanye Rant)
    All Eyes On Me

The first time watching this I felt a strong compulsion to throw my phone across the room. I felt mad and horrified at myself and our present reality. I still use my technology but have taken a huge step back now and started reading and painting again going back to what gave me joy before the internet consumed my time. Thankful to Bo for the wakeup call every day. More peace.

So true. I grew up with a rotary phone hanging on our kitchen wall, with no answering machine, even (a little Snagglepuss reference). And you know what? We all survived without being in constant communication with everyone all of the time. If someone couldn’t reach you… they had to call back later. We had an half hour of local news, and an half hour of national/world news. No puppies on the news either! If you wanted to watch a movie, you went to the theater, or you waited four years for one of the three networks to air it on tv (13 channels, if you had cable). This world of instantaneous omniscience is NOT making us better people, nor is it advancing the species. Overstimulation acting as diversion. I sound like an old fogie right now, but we experienced the world in person, not vicariously from our sofas, or Starbuck’s. I miss the simplicity, and I miss not being on camera 24/7. You know, privacy? Have we all lost our minds? Idk, I guess you’re the psychotherapist. You tell me. Thanks for the impetus for thought.

Insightful and delightful to watch your reactions to this performance - so, so, so many references (especially the Easter Egg nod to Inside Out the animation) in this song and the meaning!
A point of perspective - he is singing this to any person who watches this, describing what he (as The Internet) offers. Even at the point of the "birth for human fascination" (the Beautiful You), not so much the birth of the internet - then the steady ramping up of song, visuals, tempo, etc etc - "anything and everything, all of the time", conditioning people and perfecting ways to do it better.
I actually use this video as a little "parental guidance" for young parents - eager to "gift" their child the wonders of the internet (but mostly, to provide an easy babysitter, sadly)

Bo Burnham is kind of a tragic star in the way that he got VERY popular VERY VERY VERY quickly at quite a young age, and it took such a massive toll on his mental state that he ended up stopping pretty much all forms of content creation for five whole years while he worked on slowly putting himself back together.
and when he did, the COVID pandemic struck.
if you go back and watch everything he has done from beginning to now, you can SEE how it changes him and eventually you'll get to "inside", the special he recorded all by himself in a tiny home during the peak of COVID. the special is an incredible work of art but at its core it is inherently TERRIFYING, it's basically a year of a man slowly going insane edited down into an hour or so.
i firmly believe its a must-watch for EVERYONE in the world, it's that good

Giving your profession I would imagine you would find what he has to say quite insightful.

I grew up with the internet, and being inside it for most of if not all of my formative years, from back when 56k was a thing, to now.
I have witnessed firsthand its growth, and the good it could have done, and it pains me to also see how poorly it is squandered with the worst traits of humanity being at the forefront these days. From Vanity where adolescents are deriving their 'value' based on perceived 'fame' from algorithms and 'likes'. To wrath where mistakes are punished greatly, and corrective measures aren't valued in the slightest, just the vitriolic lashing out at perceived 'wrongs'.
The internet was meant to be a tool to bring Humanity together, to crowd-source solutions, and connect people...yet it seems for the most part it has only driven people apart and stripped away the positives of human nature, since anonymity has allowed many to indulge their dark impulses with little regard to others, leading to a cold detachment at best, or a nihilistic self-indulgent addiction at worst.
I believe that this is the reason why there is so much anxiety and depression among the youth of today, this constant need for validation and indulgence, being able to access everything they could want with very little effort, leaving them unfulfilled at the core. I know this because I was, and am one among them...and it took a long time for me to see my worth outside of the internet, and bring the humanity back to how I engage with the internet and the people on it as well.
Of course I use it for indulgence, watching youtube and the like to quiet my anxiety addled mind and keep it occupied with 'white noise' to help when things become to much. However for the most part I use it for what it was originally meant to be, a gateway to connect to others and learn from them, and engage positively with those I encounter upon it. I use the information I gather from these positive encounters to help better myself, and my community, by educating myself when I find my own knowledge lacking on particular topics that are occupying my community.
I wish there was more for the youth today in regards to helping them navigate and engage with the internet in a healthy manner, sadly most of the articles I have seen regarding the internet and its current ills tends to involve total excision of the technological capabilities, rather than a tempering what one expects from the internet and tempering what they put on said internet.

13:00 I feel like it didn't get Mentone much, but this doesn't just mean consumption, but being the consumed. The internet groomed the subject of the song, us, till we grew up, and became part of the everything that it uses to engage others. We are now watchable, putting ourselves on display for others to see.

I see you’ve got plenty of suggestions already for more Bo Burnham material, but I just want to add one note, which is that if/when you react to “Can’t Handle This (Kanye Rant)” it’s absolutely crucial (in my opinion, of course) that you immediately follow it with “Are You Happy?”
To explain why - “Can’t Handle This” is the final [live show] bit from his 2016 special Make Happy, and as he exits the stage the camera cuts to the actual final bit of the special, which is the ~2 minute long “Are You Happy?” And the two are tied to one another not just chronologically, but also thematically, and to such a degree that at least personally, I don’t feel it’s possible to separate them without diminishing/losing the overall effect and meaning.

Curious what you think of this:
I don’t post on social media, I don’t care about followers, I don’t get on to check what others are doing, I get on (mostly IG) to look at funny memes, and also to argue with people I think are ignorant or gullible. Not proud of it, but that’s the way they get me to interact the most. Feeing like I should take a break. Any way you could give some advice or some insights into why I hate-interact instead of want likes or attention for my own posts?

It's a great warning for society. In this song Bo is a millenial who addressing a typical zoomer - a person who never experienced world without broadband Internet. A huge amount of them are damaged beyond repair because they locked in neuroplasticity immersed in this horror.
I suppose he'll make a song about alphas which are even worse. Then there will be generations growing up with machine learning (called AI nowdays, but we still aren't there) and losing ability to distinguish and appreciate personhood.
We are in for a nasty, nasty ride as a society. It's going to be a bloodbath. :/

The ultimate thing with the internet.. is its the biggest double edged sword ever. Sure It's Hella cool, and I can learn things I wouldn't have though to even be interested bcuz of the internet.
But it's very over stimulating as well. So getting off it and losing that overstim is like a shock to the system (at least imo) and u get addicted to that stimulation. And then it's starts going away from using it to learn new and fun information. To.. anything and everything all of the time

Giving the youth access to the most well documented life experiences isn't necessarily a bad thing. We're, in a sense, creating the basis for cyborg technology.
