We spent our last day on Oahu enjoying all that Helena's had to offer, from Kalua Pig to Poi *my mouth is watering just thinking about it*. We loved everything that was tried and honestly the only complaint is that we did not eat here every night 😂

Man the last day of vacation is so so bitter sweet. Man everyone knows that feeling.

You could tell it was the last day. When y’all were in the car it was just so quiet unlike the other times y’all were driving. I think we all know how that feels. It’s the last day of a vacation that you were absolutely enjoying and you just don’t want to leave.
Thank you so much for doing all these videos and sharing with us your entire trip. It was so fun to watch.

The Aulani elevator music is available at the moment on Spotify, and a few other places. It's called "Mele from Aunty’s Beach House Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa."

Poi is honestly understandably harder to like if you eat it by itself. It's purposefully very bland because it's meant to be eaten together with extra salty foods. If you ever feel like trying it again have it together with the kalua pig or with lomilomi salmon.

Next time we are in Hawaii we’ll try it on something like Kalua pig

Yay! Helena's is awesome! I grew up the hill from Helena's and I am part Hawaiian by blood. I love poi! I even like day old or two day old poi, which has a slightly tart flavor. Poi with kalua pig together is the best combination if you want to get used to eating poi. I love lomi salmon as well as chicken long rice. Maybe try those next time. Maybe you already had them at some other places you visited? Thanks for your videos of this trip! I have reservations at Aulani for November!

I like one day old poi because it has the right fermentation to taste good. Three day old poi is too sour for me. I used to scatter salted dried shrimps from China over a bowl of poi and scooped each shrimp with a spoon. Of course the poi comes along with the shrimp.

HOWEVER, although my family are excellent cooks and know their restaurants too, not one took me to Helenas!😕 About the poi...I love poi. Giving props that you tried poi. Next time I suggest you dip the kalua pork in the poi. Or the lau lau. The saltiness of it taste really good. Also, please know that there are different lengths of fermented poi. The longer it has been fermented, or the older it is, it gets sour. Really fresh poi is really sweet. I fed it to my babies mixed with banana. Hopefully next time you can visit the poi farms and try fresh poi. It is also very much a part of our culture.

@@OrdinaryAdventures You two pretty much hit all of the popular places. But, theres another shrimp place just further down from where you had shrimp last time, called “Romy’s Kahuku prawns and shrimp hut”. Its a little red building on the side of the street. They harvest their prawns and shrimp right there from the shrimp ponds around the building. They also sell really good Li Hing Mui Pineapple. “Laverne’s” is another good hawaiian food place. They have a food truck, but it never changes location. Their plate lunches are on the hefty side. But i would defiantly go for their laulau/kalua combo plate! Idk if this is a ridiculous suggestion, because I’m not sure if either of you care for spam, but a cheap 7-11 musubi or a Saimin from Zippy’s is a pretty legit local staple. Other then that, we have plenty of local fusion places. As well as some pretty authentic asian restaurants. I wish you two all the luck on your next adventure to Hawai’i!!

Poi is meant to be eaten with other salty foods! Don't write off poi for good. Try it with some lomi lomi salmon or the salty pig and start with a smaller amount rather than a spoon, I promise it'll make a difference. Thank you so much for sharing your hawaiian adventures. You have fed my travel appetite and I cannot wait to watch your WDW adventures!

And yes you can take food on the plane with you as a carry on. Just not liquid of course. I always take a zip pac or surf pac from zippys when I travel. I had also taken some coco puffs to my aunt that moved to Vegas and some burgers from Diners. Manapua and pork hash I also put on a carry on. And some Molokai sweet bread for my sister in Washington state.

If you come back and eat there again, try the Squid Luau instead of the chicken, it's amazing. There isn't any curry in it. It has coconut milk in it, but no type of curry. You can't go wrong with anything there. Also need to get the lomi lomi salmon.

Totally appreciate this video! Always stoked to hear folks had a good time in Hawaiʻi, especially with the food. Next time you folks visit, try out Waiahole Poi Factory, not too far from Kualoa. That place is legit, especially if you want a proper introduction to poi. Peter should try “paʻi ʻai” the next time as well which is freshly pounded poi; thicker and contains more natural sugar. 🤙🏽

I like eating poi with haupia and/ or sugar 👍🏼 There’s also poi mochi that are fried on the outside and chewy on the inside and poi andagi which is an Okinawan fried donut (crunchier on the outside and denser on the inside than malasadas)
Also, I think Helena’s marinades then hangs their pipikaula (pronounced more like pipi-cow-la) for a while before frying it, aging it a bit I guess

Mahalo for trying our food. I've tried your food & liked it too. This is how l was raised. We never smell the food. If you remove the word "ew" from your vocabulary you can eat anything. I usually eat about 3 lbs of poi in one sitting & even more when I'm hungry. The only thing that should go into the poi is your spoon & it goes into your mouth upsidedown. Adding sugar to poi is like adding cinnamon to rice. Mixing other food in poi is like mixing apricots in mashed potatoes. Sorry Aunty Doni but what you scraped out we mixed back in. I worked hard from 7am to 6pm on 13 acres of prime westside Kaua'i taro patch lands. There's no poi too sour to eat. Kamehameha wasn't that big from being picky. Your video was absolutely wonderful. Please come back to our islands soon. A hui hou. Kaua'i still remains undefeated.

Thanks so much. I’m not sure I enjoy poi that much on its own. I know you say that’s the way it should be eaten. I want to try to eat it with pork next time to see if I like it any better that way.

    • @godofthunder808
      @godofthunder808 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes you do eat poi with other food just like every starch. Never by itself. Dried fish or shrimps with some onions gently dipped in Hawaiian salt (yes there's a difference) seems to work for many of us. A few of the "traditional" Hawaiian foods (ie. lomilomi salmon & chicken long rice) aren't really that traditional but like our flag we've incorporated influences from other cultures to form some unique fusion food. For us it's always great to hear positive reviews on our food as we've heard other comments as well. Like Roy Rogers used to sing "Happy trails to you until we meet again." Aloha pumehana.
