Prior to 1972, Sutton Coldfield was a thriving town. Subsumed into greater Birmingham, losing its own town council - who voted to join Birmingham - it is now a dying empty shell of what it once was.
All change on 01-04-1974 from Sutton Coldfield, Sutton Coldfield, Warwickshire to Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, West Midlands. There has been some stirrings about Sutton having its Royal Borough back, I think, but nothing yet has happened.
The good thing about Sutton is you have got the best of both worlds you can get from Sutton town center by bus too Birmingham main city centre. and still get back too Sutton after a good day at star city bowling and shopping
My childhood home from 1968 to 1982. ❤ As you walk passed The Holy Trinity Church building on Mill Street, the next building to you left is the Masonic Hall. It used to be the Town Hall, before it took over The Royal Hotel building on King Edward Place up by High Street. The Royal Hotel moved to the northern corner of King Edward Place and High Street. By name, The Royal Hotel is no more since they renamed the new(er) Royal Hotel to another name! I'd say things have changed, not sure for the better. 😥
A lot of empty units in the Gracechurch shopping centre. I went to school in Sutton. Family still live there, been in that town centre thousands of times.
And the one thing i have seen with this shopping center is everything is open and the front were you walk into isn't locked so if you was homless without get caught by security you could get you head down in the shopping center for a couple of hours
