How to Freeze Oranges

  • These oranges are mainly frozen for smoothies and salads. I've tried freezing them in the peelings but that makes them too hard to thaw and peel. I'm not a morning person and try to make things easy on myself when making our morning smoothies. If you know other uses for these oranges please leave your ideas in the comments below, thanks.

Phyllis, I seems like you and I grew up doing the same things. If we didn't grow it, we bought it from the farmer's market. Canning in glass jars was a way of life. We preserved everything that grew. I would love to return to those days. It is so relaxing to me to peel tomatoes, peaches, shell peas or just about anything. The satisfaction you get plus the money you save adds up at the end of a year. I really do enjoy doing this. Thank you for showing younger people how to do this and reminding us old timers of the good life we lived and it isn't too late to get back into it and we can teach some of the young ones too.

Oh, and you can also use the zest in making home made soap. Dehydrate sliced oranges and use them for hanging around the house for that citrus smell. Frozen oranges, scoop of orange sherbet and ginger ale to a blender for a refreshing summer drink. Yummmmmm

Hi Debby, I always freeze my banana at their peak. When using for smoothies which is how we mostly use them, I let them slightly thaw and if I'm in a hurry I just put them down in a little water to thaw. Thanks for commenting, Phyllis

Hi Salobrena, The Valencia oranges are grown in California, USA and also Florida, USA. A bushel of the oranges cost $23.00 U.S. Dollars and the bushel contained 56 oranges that makes my cost .41 cents each. I usually get them cheaper around Christmas time. Thanks for watching from Spain.

Hi Miss Phyllis! Those oranges look beautiful. I watched your video about freezing lemons, too. You froze some lemon zest, but said your freezer was rather full in this video. Do you ever dehydrate zest from lemons, limes or oranges? My mom used to dehydrate a lot of her extra fruit, even tomatoes for chili or spaghetti sauce. Love you, your videos, your cute dogs and even Mr Bucky. I enjoy seeing home cooked meals from the time I grew up. I was born in '63. Mom was raised on a farm and learned to cook from scratch and from what was on hand. When you lived in the country, it was unheard of to jump in the car and go to the store for one or two things. It was wasteful of time and money. She also worked with the women during harvest time cooking meals for farm hands. She told us about not having enough dishes and silverware so, the men ate in shifts and the girls washed place settings, as soon as, the men got up from the table. It was likely that a dish was used, washed and used again 3-4 times at a given meal. Well, that story had nothing to do with oranges! Haha! Watching your videos brings back lots of memories of Moms' stories and my growing up. Thank you for that, Miss Phyllis. ❤🐩🐩🐾🐾❤

    • @PhyllisStokes
      @PhyllisStokes  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I have not gotten into dehydrating so far, maybe in the future. Really enjoyed your story about feeding the farm hands with not enough dishes to serve them all at one time.

I zest my oranges and freeze the zest so I always have some on hand. I also take my veggie peeler and cut slices of the zest off being careful not to get the white part. Then I just go to my freezer when I am ready to mull apple cider and grab the sliced orange zest. I also dehydrate a lot of zest from lemons and oranges. I hate paying for spices if I can do it myself. So if you add up the savings from the farmers market not just for the juicy fruit by also the zest you have saved a lot.

Hi Phyllis, I enjoy your videos. With the oranges, if you zest the peel on the oranges first and put that zest in a freezer baggie, you will have orange zest for any recipe you need. I like to use the zest for orange cranberry scones and oatmeal cranberry cookies. The zest really adds flavor to those recipes. I didn't know you could freeze the orange itself. Thanks!

The pith on an orange is where bioflavonoids are located. Bioflavonoids help in the digestion of the vitamin C found in oranges.

    Hi, Phyllis:
Are those freezer bags quart sized, or do you prefer the gallon sized?
I have a bumper crop of oranges and lemons this year on my backyard trees, and cannot eat them all. I have given some away to neighbors, but still have a lot left on the trees. (I am in Northern CA). I thought maybe I should try and freeze some, and appreciate your video. I have heard that both oranges and lemons can get mushy if you freeze and then defrost them. Have you had that problem? I have navel oranges and what looks to be a Meyer lemon, but with slightly thicker skin.
Also, I've heard people say to freeze them both whole, but I only have a small bottom drawer type freezer under my fridge (all one unit), with no spare freezer, so my space is limited.
    Thanks so much,
    Joyce

Freezing both lemons and oranges whole seems to make them a little bitter so now I only freeze the juices in ice trays to use for smoothies. I have had good luck freezing the zest with added sugar.

They don't stick together without flash freezing on a tray first?
Modern self-defrosting freezers sure do impede the life and quality of frozen foods, yes.
I find foods at our local farmer's market, here in Utah, have a higher price tag than at the more competitive grocery stores, just usually better quality and taste. The exception is if you get there near closing time when the farmers don't want to take anything home and sell it for a steal, but the more popular items are gone within the first hour.
However, we do have a store (LoLo's) that guarantees the lowest produce prices in town and buys a lot of items from local growers, so knowing the best ways to put up produce I overflow my cart with is always helpful.
Have you ever heard of freezing apples for smoothies? I know the texture changes, so I found it odd, but someone out there is doing it.
Any tips for maximizing freezer space? My old freezer gave up the ghost a while back, and everything has felt very cramped ever since.

+AccordingToLorna I use the plastic fresh salad containers to organize my freezer - I'm not sure if that gives me more room but it sure helps to keep things in easy reach. My freezer stays at zero not the same as below 32 degrees, I have to defrost about 4 times per year, that little fan that keeps freezers from getting frost also causes the temperature to be higher than in the frost kind of freezer. That's probably the reason I never get freezer burn. Just a thought.

Yeah, I agree. I've tried both types of freezers, and while I hate defrosting, that temp change in the self-defrosters makes things start to melt, stick together, and get freezer burn faster. Modern tech tends to save time while lessening overall quality.
I found some helpful info on freezing apples. They can be anything from whole to made into pie filling (cooked or raw); they just have to be cooked or used in smoothies when thawed. (I'm so happy to learn oranges can still be used like fresh, because I have to limit eating them for health reasons).
One woman on TH-cam puts parchment paper into a pie dish, adds fresh sliced apples, sugar, thickener, cardamom, and ginger, freezes it overnight, and then transfers it to freezer paper and a zip bag. Space-saving pie filling.
Have you ever tried making a pie with oranges or grapes? I love cooked grapes. I've grilled them before, stems and all, and they were hot and sweet. I even tried steam juicing watermelon once. YIKES!
      Thanks for your videos.

Thanks very much for the video I really appreciate it. Just to note though! the white of the orange is very good for you, so my only observation is that you are loosing lots of good nutrients by throwing away so much.
If possible organic oranges and limes lemon are way better because the skin is absolutely good for our bodies.
All the same thanks again and much love to all. 🙏🏾💕👍🏿

I am wondering why you don't put peaches in boiling water to remove skins:

My mother nor my grandmother ever put them in boiling water so I just do it like they did it.
Of course they were always doing multiple bushels and it would have taken a lot of boiling
      water and time.

thanks for the video but you didn't have to spend half of it showing us how to peel and take apart oranges. we already know how to do that

On the contrary, I'd like to thank this you-tuber for showing exactly those steps precisely *because* I was not familiar with the best way to peel and slice citrus. This video helped me so much! Don't make the mistake of assuming that everyone has the same life experience. We are all coming from different backgrounds and different things to share. Positivity is the way to go! Peace and light...
