at this price, it's no wonder that new hyundai and kia cars are becoming a rarity these days on Malaysia roads.

Not even the top spec of the Creta lineup but the pricing😅 makes its stablemate the Kona looks more of a better and rational choice out of them both

Wow why are the prices so high in Malaysia? Not even full spec. Here in Indonesia, this car the most expensive at only RM 125K equivalent, even after discounts it can be had at RM 109K
and the fullspec trim here we can get a panoramic sunroof, Bose 9 speakers with subwoofer, leather seats, air purifier, two-tone polished rims, ventilated seats, piano black panel on digital A/C and entertainment screen, and black chrome front badge.
with good driving quality and equipment, far above the HRV, this car has good sales figures even though the design is not easily accepted.

Because Malaysia impose high import duty to protect local car industry. Imported cars (CBU) are way more expensive than locally produced ones with comparable specs. It is also more expensive than in the country of origin where it produced (usually from Thailand or Indonesia).
To avoid such treatment, some giants are willing to take extra steps, building manufacturing plant in Malaysia and sell their products under local Malaysia brands (JV with Malaysia Govt). Daihatsu behind Perodua, and Geely behind Proton. These two currently dominate the market.
Indonesia actually does the same thing with Astra (we don't promote it as National Car, since Toyota/Daihatsu have JV with private entity). All imported cars from Msia become more expensive here. Like Perodua Myvi 1.3L G CVT vs Daihatsu Sirion 1.3L X CVT (comparable spec) is sold at RM 48,500 in Malaysia vs Rp228,000,000 (RM64,000) in Indonesia.

The price is quite surprising. It is more expensive than higher end/more powerful cars in the MY market. Can anyone share why the pricing is like this?

Both HR-V and Corolla Cross are also better spec than this with lower price. CBU Indonesia doesn't need to pay extra import duty, this cannot justify its price.
Even a cheaper CX-30 High Plus with way more premium interior, 2.0NA with 6 speed and i-Activsense is even cheaper than this low spec Creta. Forget about first 150, the Mazda is coming with 5 years free maintenance package too. I wonder if SD has any plan to sell this car at all.

I mean it's a nice car , but can it even compete with its rivals like the Proton X50 , Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V?

It looks like it's competing with the base spec Proton X50. Sorry Hyundai, I don't think this will sell well

This is a poor product at 150k, doesn't make sense to be more expensive than Kona from Korea
