Can't believe I'm shedding tears watching this, I read about this steel company when I was in primary school, my father said that he wanted me to understand why Nigeria will never work, I didn't understand it fully as a child, I was even excited telling him that it will provide lots of jobs to the Nigerian people...
He was even dead before I started coming to terms with his lessons..

Don't be marvelled. The myth about Nigeria surviving the pillaging of her commonwealth by successive administrations is obvious. We are neck-deep in debt liabilities running into several billions of dollars. Do you call that survival for a nation that expends over 80% of her revenues in loan servicing? Our profligate past has caught up with us and is now pulling us into abyss.

I weep for my nation. Growing up in AJ was a testament to the fact that there was a country. Seeing ASCL suffer neglect from the '80s through the '90s and 2000s until the sleeping giant was killed and industrialization was buried on the altar of avarice and corruption. In 2019, it was time for us to take a bow and say goodbye.

Let's not forget that international politics, dominated by world powers and Bretton Wood Institutions through the instrumentality of MNCs, also played a role in the failure of Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited in the Cold War/post-Cold War era.

...this can only be described as tragic. Where would we be now if we had shown a bit of sense and stuck to the original schedule in 1979? Instead we have a litany of self-centred and myopic deals from callous people in charge. To make matters worse, even with all this readily available history, the people in charge right now in 2024 are arguably worse. Essentially, we do not give a damn about Nigeria.
When you think of how our esteemed Naira has been mercilessly battered by these deals, USD1.00 = NGN0.60 (1979) depreciating to NGN1680.00 (2024) begins to make perfect sense. Imagine the impact those funds would have had if they had remained in the country.
Our road far well well. I have subscribed, BTW. Great work.

There are well connected individuals in Nigeria who are getting paid to help hold down development in the country. The experience of Dangote refinery validate this. It's the same situation in the power sector. Can't wait for the day dollar will crash because without that, those folks would continue in the same path. I've been reading about the Ajaokuta steel plant getting off the ground since like the early 80s. Imagine where the country would have been with such plant functioning since then. But the power that be wouldn't let it work. Steel means development. It's essential. The fact that it was built by a Soviet entity tell you something.

Nigeria like I have always said, had been ruined by Nigerians for over 60 years, how to revive and survive this nation will take a miracle the miracle will entail change of character by ALL OF US, not protests, not anarchy, once the next set of activists and critics come to power, they will continue where the former thieves in power stop, It is power that corrupts in this country, nothing else
    Thanks for the elaborate expose

Brilliant and unmatched presentation. I am inclined to say that President Shagari meant well for the steel company, given the level of work done before the subsequent military (corrupt) regimes on to present day. It's Shameworthy on the part of state looters. All they can think of is their stupid pockets filled with money. Yet they are revered as their excellencies and statesmen.

Late President Ummaru Musa Yar'adua, the only person that could have literally brought Nigeria out of the mess we've been in for years sadly they had to finish him off quickly because of that.
