      Unfortunately her mother would have needed to be vigilant with a condition like that because the medical industry is *notorious* for dismissing the signs of rare illness until it’s almost too late. Look how many kids are removed from their parents because of genetic disorders being overlooked in favour of CA allegations- children have died and families destroyed.

    They never shouldve let her get involved in the case, no matter how smart or useful she was. Its an immediate conflict of interest, seen by how she gave her kid an experimental drug that may have made her condition worse. Doctors have a hard job, made harder by breaking families hearts when they cant treat a condition. Put being MOTHER of the patient into the mix, and you get someone who will go to dubious lengths to treat said condition.

    It's interesting that a geneticist wouldn't have themselves tested to see what they may be carrying BEFORE having a child.

    • @willlllow
      @willlllow ปีที่แล้ว +45

      she looks young, was probably in medical school or residency when she had her daughter. She wouldn’t have been a geneticist yet. Its possible her daughters rare issues are what motivated her to specialise in genetics. or maybe she is just a one off character and the writers didn’t think too heavily into her backstory.

      If they never had any symptoms themselves It would be weird to check IMO

    • @maskedmallard537
      @maskedmallard537 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Genetic testing is usually a last step, ie, it's not one of these curable conditions so maybe there's an underlying genetic cause. The only time there is genetic testing without symptoms is if you are related to a person already confirmed to have the genetic condition.
      My aunt suffered high blood pressure and miscarriages for years before having a severely mentally handicapped child. But it wasn't until over 20 years later when my niece was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder because of multiple heart attacks and strokes shortly after birth that the rest of my family got tested. Turned out my mum, Aunt, brother, sister and cousins all had this blood disorder. So far seems to have skipped me. 🤞

    • @yubelwish
      @yubelwish 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Because the hospital and labs don't offer tests without cause. You need to have a significant medical history of an unknown disorder to get the test offered.
      Medical tests are expensive. I would assume that specialized tests can easy cost 6 figures and they don't offer doctor discounts.
      In America even if you have a reason to be concerned to get tested the insurance company will need to approve it to cover the cost.
      A doctor can't test themselves because the ly need to have a requisition made by another doctor or else it would be considered as wasting / stealing medical testing which can jeopardized their medical license.

      House always tried to find a cause that's curable, because if it's incurable, like a genetic disease, he may have solved the puzzle, but he will lose his patient and while people think all he cares about is his puzzle, that's patently untrue. House go above and beyond for his patients in unorthodox ways because he cares. But he is no miracle worker. There are just some cases where the answer is a terminal disease and that's that.
