Semi/Demi-Permanent vs. Permanent Hair Color: Which is Best for Toning Highlights?

  • As a hair stylist, I often recommend semi-permanent or demi-permanent hair color for clients who want to tone their highlights. The reason for this is that these types of hair color can provide a subtle toning effect without significantly altering the base color of the hair.
    When you get highlights, the hair is usually lightened to create the desired effect, which can leave it with brassy or yellow tones. To counteract these tones, a toner is used to deposit color that will cancel them out.
    Semi-permanent and demi-permanent toners are a great option because they are gentle on the hair and do not contain harsh chemicals like ammonia or high levels of peroxide. This means that they deposit color onto the hair shaft and provide a subtle toning effect without lifting the natural pigment of the hair. As a result, they won't shift your base color when toning your highlights, which is great for clients who want a subtle toning effect without making a drastic change to their hair.

    Wow... It's like God gave men an amazing ability to get straight to the point, with the facts, very efficiently! I've studied text and watched multiple other time consuming videos that left me wondering where the meat & potatoes were! (We ladies ~tend~ to ramble without as many facts 😂!) ...Thank you Nick Mirabella!

    I want to use Wella's NEW Demi-Permanent to tone my hair. Wella's Color Charm line has drastically changed recently. They say they have REformulated the 10 Developer and that it will not affect my virgin unhighlighted hair. I am just having a really hard time with believing that. What are your thoughts? I do not want to LIFT my virgin hair. And Wella Color Charm does NOT have the Activating Lotion anymore. I have some but now can't use it, apparently, because they have gotten rid of the original Color Charm Demi Perm colors.

    Great video with good info! I am a natural brunette, and have 3b/3c type curly hair. I highlighted my hair last wk which lifted to a orange coppery color, with some brassy tones which I knew was going to happen. It's not that brassy, but it could use some toning. I was thinking about using a semi permanent by Clairol Beautiful Collection. I like that brand, plus no mixing required. Whether it's Clairol Beautiful Collection, or another semi, which color would you recommend to tome down the orange brassiness? I was thinking a light ash blonde.

    I bleached my hair at home and put a permanent all over. I was advised to do my roots by putting bleach on for 20 minutes then the last twenty minutes on the rest of the hair for 40 minutes total processing time. So here I am thinking the process is every 2 months to do my roots, then the rest of my hair to get it all back to the colour of the inside of a banana lay colour on. Skip to a hairdresser telling me you never take the whole hair back to the blank canvas stage and you can only change the hair colour each time using a semi-permanent. How do I get blonde at home? JUst lighten the roots and put a semi over everything? Won't the lengths look faded or another colour?

      It's totally hard to figure this out not knowing the true stage you are at with your color, honestly I simply don't recommend at home bleaching, but if your ends are dull and full of toner buildup, do not tone it again if it's not needed!

    I have natural coarse, curly, grey/white hair. I’m thinking about having a gloss and tone hair colour applied by a salon to brighten my grey.
    Not sure if I will pick a violet or blue tone. Worried that it won’t wash out completely in 6-8 weeks, leaving a demarcation line in my hair.
    I haven’t coloured my hair since my early 20’s as my hair is very resistant to dye. I am now in my 60’s.

    Hi Nick , I have a question. So I got my hair professionally done last week. I got the color I wanted but when I got home and washed it another day the color washed off , My black hair was lifted to golden brown and with lighter highlights . All this is much lighter than what I wanted and got originally, and I was thinking of using a Demi on it to make it darker . I’m only worried if the highlights will also turn dark and end up looking like it’s one flat color , ruining the salon look. Will it ? Thanks in advance!

    Yes but what if you have had highlights on coloured hair which won’t be affected by a permanent colour. Can u answer if a permanent colour is better than a semi on just the highlighted area?

    • @nickmirabella1
      @nickmirabella1  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Using hair color all depends on your goal. One thing to keep in mind is that if you know you change your hair A LOT, it's always better too just stick with semi. BUT if you are just liking that one color, go with permanent! Everyone's situation is different.

    Can I tone my hair to a blonde then use my semi permanent hair color (green apple) to get the exact color?

    • @nickmirabella1

      If you are blonde like a level 9/10 green Apple should show up for you . I would prob foil in the green apple and tone in between the foils .

    What is the difference between toning highlights with semi and demi permanent?

    • @nickmirabella1
      @nickmirabella1  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Semi hair color fades a little quicker than demi hair color. It depends on the results you are looking for. Some people want color for a super temporary time period.
