The greatest deep track song of Rush's entire catalog. They finally broke it out of the vaults and played it live a few times during their last and final tour.
Given that both Alex and Neil were being injected with painkillers before every show on R40, the song had become very personal by then. There's one other great deep track that they never played live that I wish I could've heard, Available Light.

@@ratowey Have you seen the Rush Cover band YYNOT version of this song ?? ...its freaking awesome ..id like to get rich and kel to do it but that might require an act of Congress ....lol ...j/k guys ...hehehe
I am wiping the tears from my eyes as i type this. My heart goes out to this couple for having lost their child. I am truly blessed to have not had to endure their type of loss. I received this album, "Signals," as a Christmas present from my parents in 1982. "Losing It" became my favorite song after hearing this album in its entirety the first time (I had requested this album for a Christmas gift after hearing the song "New World Man"). I am now 53 years old and can relate to this song on so many levels.
So off the Signals album the first lyrics are about a ballerina and then about a writer-in this case: Ernest Hemingway and at the time Neil reflected that this applies to anyone with gifts of dance, voice, writing, sports that there is a finite time of being at your peak and slowly over time: Losing It…the gift that made you a living perhaps famous celebrity known to be best at something. Neil himself acknowledged that it was coming to an end for him-retirement. Aches pains etc ultimately cancer but also knowing the years of stamina particularly from Fly by Night to Power Windows was ebbing away. The wonderful Mr. Ben Mink on Electric Violin 🎻
Rich ... "yah ... there it is ..." You are so right on point. They do it all the time where they come from complexity and chaos into syncopation that hits your soul! Thanks guys!!
Neil had stated in his final interviews that he didn't want to be seen as the dancer as written about in verse 1 and why he chose this time to end his part in the band. It's also the reason why he "suggested" this song be played (for the first time) on the R40 Tour. I was 12 when this song was released. I am now 49. I have NEVER heard this song without choking up. Thanks for posting and again my condolences on your indescribable loss.
They never played this live until R40 back in 2015 and they actually got Ben Mink who plays the violin part to appear in either Toronto show or New York show. The had another fiddle player or 2 do all the other shows.
@@surfeit5910 Holy shit, yes!! Heavily underrated and hidden gems of Rush songs, especially in the 80's era. Emotion Detector actually has a special place in my heart, and perhaps one of Alex Lifeson's heavily underrated guitar solos.
You know how I knew that Rush was retiring from touring on their R40 Tour in 2015? Because they FINALLY played “Losing It “ LIVE!! I also lost a son 24 years ago to brain cancer. Songs like Force Ten and Afterimage got me through one of the worst times in my life. One of times I saw Rush live was a month after my son passed and the first song they played was Force 10. There’s just something about their songs that hit every emotion .

He is just as amazing a lyracist as a drummer. And Rich - you were clearly moved during this one. You are a good guy.
Been watching you guys for a while now and I'm so sorry about your son! When I saw you react in the middle and then you explained about how he made you feel about new music, I initially took it that you were reading the lyrics and were having a moment! Great, great song and the lyrics have more meaning to me now than they did when I first heard it. I heard this song when I was a young man listening to the Signals album. Neil's lyrics gave me a window into the future that encouraged me to make the most of my time of youth. So, I have Neil to thank for all the years I was able to spend as a performing drummer.
I’m so pleased you did a Rush track. I fell in love with this group in my mid teens and never let them go. It’s one of my favourite bands of all time. One of their quieter songs but one of my favourites.

You brought me in because I was recommending this song for another reviewer on youtube. I must have listened to Signals a thousand times between vinyl and CD. You had to listen to both side through on vinyl, or I wouldn't have learned to love track #8. Losing you is special because of the message and the electric violin virtuoso. Love Love Love
Hey Rich an Kel, first Rich, I was a trumpet player and even had a college pay for my time at their institution...I started as a drummer 5 years before the horn, discovered Rush in 81 with Moving Pictures on the radio (yes I am older than you guys) love what your doing it, this is one of my fav's as I was trying to learn the notes on keyboard in 83/84 in summer school! Oh did see them live from Signals through SnA!! Missed them when I was in Iraq though

Another top Rush tune of mine. Have loved it for years. How sad our master lyricist has left us.
Truly one of the most beautiful and poignant songs. I saw this tour and think it’s again way underrated. This song and countdown are two of the most under heard powerful songs off this record. With Ben Mink on violin RUSH became a four piece band for one song. Peace, Phil
I remember playing this track to one of my music professors in college in 1983. He said, "There is no way in Hades this song was a RUSH song." I showed him the Signals cassette tape and his mind was completely blown. He became a RUSH fan based on this track. Outstanding video, guys! Rest in peace, Pratt.....
Ok, I just love this song. And loved watching you react. It always makes me solemn. But OMG, you just took me a whole nother place with the story of your son. I wish you both peace, and am so glad you found this crazy TH-cam community to be here with you, for you, and support you. I wasn’t prepared for that after the song. But you made my heart sad, and then happy to end on a kiss. Stay strong and let your love of good music be your strength.
Limelight, Tom Sawyer, The pass, Available light, Witch hunt, leave The enemy within... Then again I could name the entire discography :P Please do more Rush !!!!!! Love you guys
I absolutely love this song, Rush are just incredible. Love the reaction, keep listening to more Rush it will enormously enrich your life. So sorry to hear about your son, but I suppose if he's watching you both now he would be so chuffed.
i usually tell my ben mink tory here. i am, intead, crying for you and the son you lost. lost, is not the right word, cause he is definitely here, or i wouldn't be weeping. like this song, your son is a gift that keeps on giving. you both just made this piece even more special. love to you and your family. ev xoxo
Thanks for the shoutout...but my name is 'Darren' (can't tell you how many times I've been called Darryl! LOL) Yeah, this is a heartwrenching one...I think I cried the first time I heard this piece (both the beauty of the lyrics and music!) Technically speaking, this is one of the rare Rush songs with a 4th member - Ben Mink, on electric violin! The guy is astounding, and he played live with the band on their R40 tour here in Toronto (which, alas, was their farewell 'final' hurrah) - it was a magical performance!!
Besides the powerful lyrics, what makes this song special is the rare moment when Rush invited Ben Mink to play the electric violin on this song. For years, Rush never played this live until their last tour.
An epic favorite of mine. I feel the message of the song is to get out there and try to achieve something you love. Regardless if you become great at it and recognized for it or not, the journey is the true gift. Even if you loose the ability later in life, you still knew what it was like to chase after it or even have it.
You make my day with Rush and this song. Stay the way you are. You're beautiful. Kel, Je suis de la rive sud de Montréal et Rush est mon groupe préféré.. Have a great day :)
A song played with a 🎻 ...always a feel good song 4 me...Ck out the live version actually takes 4 guys they played it on there last tour 2015 wow so epic!!
This song=DARK, DEEP, DEPRESSING, EMOTIONALLY GUT WRENCHING. It's like goth meets classical techno pop. Only Rush can pull off that kinda musical madness, and make it magically magnificent. I can't help but get choked up listening to it, after all of the family and friends I've lost before I even turned 50yo last year. My favorite quote by the Professor himself: "Time does not heal all wounds, but only allows us to adapt, if we can, to a life that is forever altered." - Neil Peart
I love how Kel falls into a trance at the 7:05 mark. Reminds me of how we all did it back in the day, the same way.... Turn it up, turn the lights off...enjoy!!
4 people actually as they brought in a violinist just for this song. Read Neil's book "Far and Wide" as he explains about this song and when you read that then re-listen the song again....it becomes that much better masterpiece of work 👌😎👍
LOVE THAT SONG !!!! HOLY WOW !!!! WHAT WORDS BY NEIL PEART !!!! There was 4 people in the song actually. Look up the live version and you will see the violinist.
Saw Rush nine times on nine different tours from 1981 and on. Never did see them play 'Losing it' live. They only played it a handful of times from what I understand. Canadian metal/rock: #KobraandtheLotus Light Me Up (from Calgary) #Anciients Raise The Sun (from Vancouver) #Aeternam Moongod (from Quebec) #Borealis Where We Started (From Mississauga/Orangeville) #Striker Heart Of Lies (from Edmonton)
#TheVeerUnion Bitter End, FL USA, Hi Kel n Rich, my name is Ian, I am a recent subscriber and I really love the channel, I truly appreciate the reactions, and having a sister who passed away 3 years ago who loved all rock music, and being the one to introduce it to myself, I can honestly somewhat relate. That aside, I do have a request that I have not seen anyone do yet, and that is "Bitter End" by The Veer Union. Thank you guys so much for what you do and please don't ever stop doing it.

Neil Peart’s lyrics are just as powerful as his drumming. One of the best songs on Signals. #Mystery The Last Glass of Wine off of Delusion Rain. This band is from Quebec Canada where Kel was born. Beautiful song. This one is for Kel .
Hey Kel and Rich! I just found you guys and since this is one of my favorite songs from my favorite band of all time I watched it. I am lucky enough to be surrounded by musicians, my son is a rock drummer and my gf plays principal flute in the symphony, so I have people bringing me new music all the time. I offer 2 recommendations: Coheed & Cambria and The Dear Hunter. My son introduced me to both and my gf and I are now big fans of them as well. When we got to see TDH live she said it was the best live vocal performance she had ever seen. I would say their best material can be found within the Acts concept albums, mainly 2 thru 5. As for Coheed & Cambria, I honestly like all their stuf,f but I started with Good Apollo 1. Trust me, you will be hooked!
A live version with decent sound is here on TH-cam: th-cam.com/video/Vhih2J2q14I/w-d-xo.html FYI... Absolute magic! Rush had this gem in their tool chest for 30+ years before pulling it out for their final tour (R40). Jonathan Dinklage had a video segment where he talked about hearing this as a kid (and finally hearing a "cool" violin song) and practicing on his violin forever until he was able to play it. Sitting in for Ben Mink and getting to play with Rush, this specific song, was dream he never thought possible. Frankly his solo is so exacting and true to the original that it boggles the mind, awesome song!
The rabbit hole is deep in the rabbit hole is wide. Good thing we brought lots of tools and lots of food for the journey. This was a great one. So special. RIP NP. Much love. Rich.
When they played this on their R40 tour, people were so happy. They had been clamoring for Rush to play this song for years. Literally. You might want to look into that R40 version. The song is very sad, but even through its sadness, they take you for a ride musically. Ben Mink playing the violin solo was fantastic. Rush was not as popular through the 80s (or at least not here in the States) as they should have been aside from Moving Pictures, which is my own definition of a perfect album. They had a dedicated following, but as with most of the bands I follow, I wish they had more success through those years.
I HAVE THE EXACT SAME COFFEE MUG, RICH !!! And the solo was electric violin by Ben Mink. "Signals" is my favorite album EVER - SERIOUSLY...of all albums!!!
Dear Kel and Rich, Firstly my sincere condolences on the loss of your son, I cant even imagine the pain you are experiencing. Lyrically, Losing It is one of the most moving pieces Rush has written. Ben Monk originally played the violin portion, but John Dinklage (Actor Peter Dinklage's Brother) who was part of the string quartet that toured with Rush on the Clock work Angels tour, played the violin part at the New Jersey R40 Show. I would suggest you listen to "The Garden" form Rush's Clockwork Angels album and "Supper's Ready" from Genesis' 1972 release Foxtrot. Have tissue ready.....
I glad you guys are doing Rush songs with the lyrics. Part of appreciating rush is to follow the lyrics. Nobody puts pen to song better than Peart. Good reaction.

Peace, Phil
My favorite band! And one of my favorite songs!
They actually had a guest violinist that recorded on this song. the writer he talks about is Ernest Hemingway
i usually tell my ben mink tory here. i am, intead, crying for you and the son you lost. lost, is not the right word, cause he is definitely here, or i wouldn't be weeping. like this song, your son is a gift that keeps on giving. you both just made this piece even more special. love to you and your family. ev xoxo
God I just want to burst out in tears. Kudos to you both. Sending love from Hallandale Beach.
Oh and if you like Losing It, try Entre Nous from their Permanent Waves album.
One of Rush's finest songs-very underrated.
Thanks for the shoutout...but my name is 'Darren' (can't tell you how many times I've been called Darryl! LOL)
Yeah, this is a heartwrenching one...I think I cried the first time I heard this piece (both the beauty of the lyrics and music!)
Technically speaking, this is one of the rare Rush songs with a 4th member - Ben Mink, on electric violin! The guy is astounding, and he played live with the band on their R40 tour here in Toronto (which, alas, was their farewell 'final' hurrah) - it was a magical performance!!
I'm a huge Rush fan, seen them 5 times and I love there music but this particular song was amazing ❤
That song always moves me...
Fantastic songs from a band that has influenced my life a great deal.
Rush was considered a band for nerds back in the day. I guess I'm a nerd because I love it!
You are officially my spirit human...
😉
I thumbed up before even watching this video just because I love Losing It so much. This song means a lot to me so thank you for watching it.
My favorite quote by the Professor himself: "Time does not heal all wounds, but only allows us to adapt, if we can, to a life that is forever altered."
- Neil Peart
Love this SONG. And off a great album. Good guitar work too. Love me some R U S H
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
One of my favorite Rush songs...
Entre Nous from "Permanent Waves", Chemistry from "Signals", Between the Wheels from "Grace Under Pressure "
I love how Kel falls into a trance at the 7:05 mark. Reminds me of how we all did it back in the day, the same way.... Turn it up, turn the lights off...enjoy!!
4 people actually as they brought in a violinist just for this song. Read Neil's book "Far and Wide" as he explains about this song and when you read that then re-listen the song again....it becomes that much better masterpiece of work 👌😎👍
the sound of violin makes me chill and thrill.....
LOVE THAT SONG !!!! HOLY WOW !!!! WHAT WORDS BY NEIL PEART !!!! There was 4 people in the song actually. Look up the live version and you will see the violinist.
I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of your son. I’m sure he’s enjoying your reactions
Saw Rush nine times on nine different tours from 1981 and on. Never did see them play 'Losing it' live. They only played it a handful of times from what I understand.
Canadian metal/rock: #KobraandtheLotus Light Me Up (from Calgary)
#Anciients Raise The Sun (from Vancouver)
#Aeternam Moongod (from Quebec)
#Borealis Where We Started (From Mississauga/Orangeville)
#Striker Heart Of Lies (from Edmonton)
One of the best lyrical songs ever written. There’s Rush then there’s all the rest.
Respect man. Stick around, I'm sure they'll get to it. Hit me up if you want suggestions. No matter where you are on your metal journey I'm sure I got something that can blow your mind :)
Oh gosh I love both of your t-shirts!
Plug it in! The most cool real shit I’ve ever felt!,, thank you Kel!
Watching y'all react to these songs is so awesome! I absolutely LOVE RUSH! Welcome to the Rabbit Hole that is RUSH!
Signals , was my 1st ever Rush LP and a favorite...played the hell out of it. Love every track!
Cool, another trumpet player metalhead! (though I play piano more now). This is one of my favorite Rush songs. It's just beautiful.
The electric violin guest player is awesome on this.
One of my favorites
I glad you guys are doing Rush songs with the lyrics. Part of appreciating rush is to follow the lyrics. Nobody puts pen to song better than Peart. Good reaction.
One of my favorites.
