Nice video. Ford is in the process of getting a trans and installing in my car. Its on back order. I appreciate seeing what it takes to complete this job and also what the failure mode was. Ford says it fixed this problem in cars manufactured after August 2015. I wonder what they changed.
Thanks for watching! I have heard horror stories with people waiting months for a rebuilt trans. Hopefully you don't have to wait that long. To fix the issue, they changed some bearing sizes/tolerances: static.oemdtc.com/TSB/MC-10108994-9999.pdf
Take a look at the gear that drives the non electric transaxle oil pump ,does it have all its teeth sheared off (If the energi varient has one, looks like it does. , was the transaxle low on oil ?

just checked out a 2013 fushion hybrid non plug in. and it makes a horrible screaching sound just when the engine turns on. Coming from the transmission clearly. I told her without knowing these cars it sounds like a bearing has gone bad inside the trans. What is the chance that if that sound is already happening (pretty freaking loud) that there is damage to her case? Could it be she could get lucky or is the trans likely just needing a new or used trans (not just replacing the roller bearings and sending it?
Without hearing or seeing it, I bet the chances of saving it are slim. Even if the bearing race is repairable, there will be metal bits in the fluid that have made their way to other bearings and components. Flushing that all out would be a monumental task.
hey Nix great video of course, very informative and useful on this issue. Big Thanks. My question is, did you have to get the Dealership to flash or program the replaced parts to the vehicle in order for it to function correctly? maybe you mentioned it in part 2 or i missed it but id appreciate to know. Thanks again
You mentioned that the Energi had a transmission cooler pump with a line going to the rear of the transmission. Would there still be a line there for other models or a plug? Great Video!!
Testing the limits of my memory. It's not a coolant pump, it's actually a fluid pump to keep the fluid moving in the transmission when the energi is in full electric mode. The non plug in hybrid cars don't have it because (I think) their ICE runs all of the time (thus keeping the fluid pumping).
I have a 2014 ford fusion hybrid. I need to replace mount under the inverter. If i pull the disconnect in the trunk and remove all of the wiring up front will i need to have the dealership reprogram my car? I replaced the other engine mounts and the one under the inverter rattles loud on start ups.
Thanks for the video. Can you say what the drain plug size is of the HF35? I heard you mention it was 5/16. Just not sure if there’s more to that size. Thanks again.
I do appreciate the video, but the 12V battery runs the 12V accessories, it does not start the internal combusion engine, when changing the transmission you might have notices there is no 12V starter. The high voltage electric motor acts as a starter for the ford hybrids.
Good video, i have a fleet of Fusion hybrid. One out of 10 goes bad. It is covered up to 8 years/100k miles with Ford Out of warranty I used to pay $1600 for a used one, now the cheapest around me is $2700 I have 2 at Ford currently, been almost 2 months waiting for a refurbished one, its on a back order.
Hello b or, I'm about to buy a 2013 ford c-max, with 130,000 miles on it, and the price is $5,000. The car dealer told me the car was noisy and I found out it was because the transmission bearing lock was broken. Can you tell me how to fix this problem? Or where to find parts?
If you haven't bought it, don't buy it with that problem unless you're skilled enough to follow my video. It is pretty technical to replace this transmission.
@@landmanron I don't know exactly, but not that much. I would think something in the $6,000 range would be about right. They're giving you the "we want you to buy a new car" quote. Take it to an independent shop and get a 2nd quote.
Impressive! ...a local dealer is selling one for $5k with a "bad trans". I thought they were direct drives from the electric motor -- not CVT ...guess not.
They're not a traditional CVT with a belt. Two electric motors connected together. One motor is used as a generator, the other as the drive motor. When the engine runs, it is only driving the generator. It's a lot like how a diesel electric train locomotive works.
Great video but does not work for Cmax not enough clearance to drop trans alone. Also subframe and struts are different. easier to pull ball joint and no need to disconnect tie rods.
Hey, a good friend of mine who I am trying to help out, she has a 2017 Ford fusion hybrid with a CVT trans. The car has about $230,000 mi on it, but it's in pretty good shape... The car runs and drives great. It does need jump-started if you want to drive it someplace,... But it's making a transmission associated noise, racket, under the hood, a lot of times when you let off the gas, sometimes when you're just idling. Sometimes when you are starting to accelerate. I changed the fluid in it today for her and it didn't fix anything. She owes a substantial amount of money against it, are you interested in buying this car?.. I don't think she can afford to fix it,... She was told by somebody, just one mechanic, that it has something to do with the electrical motor. But I'm not sure if we can believe them, and we're going to maybe get a second opinion,
When I say 10mm, 12mm, 13mm, etc. I (and all mechanics/anyone making a video like this) are talking socket/wrench size required to remove or install a nut/bolt. Nobody cares about thread size unless you have to chase the threads/tap a hole. People following these videos care about what socket/wrench size they need to grab out of their tool box to remove or install a bolt. @@NiXFiX Yes sorry for the complaint and thank you for explaining. Didn't mean to insult you and TY for the effort you put in to making this vid. I've never done it myself as I don't do anything worth recording
I did this job, the Ford reman transmission lasted 16, 000 miles and started making bearing noise again. I wish I had been able to trade it instead of going through all of this. This transmission is trash, they need to take lessons from Toyota.
The transmission design is genius for the most part. Light years ahead of the adjusting pulley designs. Having no gears and no clutches and no bands/belts should make these things last forever. The fact that they cant figure out how to keep the bearings lubed up is pretty ridiculous though. If they figure that out these trannies would last 300-400k miles, maybe 500k. Maybe if someone designed sealed aftermarket bearing or cover that had better fluid ports these would be bulletproof.
@@Hairybarryy Same here. I got a few questions. Are people regularly servicing the transmission? Are people abusing their car (I see it ALL the time - people flooring their cars and I can smell their burning transmission fluid)? Is it a dud (and I happen to see these "duds" with every make)?
I have ford fusion 2019 hybrid I change the transmisson two times at the dealer in the city of windsor ,ontario .Canada Which I do not recommend Anyone to do business there and the Problem still there internal bearing fault
Consumer Protection Bureau should sue Ford for this. They knew about this in 2014/15 if I'm correct. Ford chose to make a software change which prolonged the failures but, didn't fix it. A good transmission should never fail in a car with normal operation and care. That should be the last thing to fail in a car. Ford is at fault 100%. 10% failure rate is insane.

Unfortunately I do not know off hand. Fordpartsgiant might be a place to start. But I'd have to Google it just like you. Sorry.
why would the tran be trashed that bad. ? was it engineered wrong or what happened ?
Stretching my memory on this one, but I believe the bearing design on some of the gears had too tight of a tolerance. Roller bearings would go bad.
