I started collecting the gi Joe's as they came out in 1982, I had a huge collection, I packed it up when went away to college, after college I came home to pick up all my joes, and they were all gone. I miss them so much. I would love to start collecting them again. But I just dont have the money for it, they are so expensive anymore.
I remember this kid down the street got this for Christmas one year...he always got tons of toys all year long, and I distinctly remember riding my bike near his house, seeing the box it came in near the trash after Christmas. A year later, it was sold in a yard sale, which, for some reason my older brother thought I'd want to have it...it was missing all the depth charges, bike, and the vanes, but I didn't care, it floated and it was awesome!
One of the BEST G. I. JOE Vehicles I received from my mom when I was little Memories that last a lifetime seeing these videos . Do Not Give IN !!! Keep It UP !!
The main reason Hasbro likely won't re release the Whale is because of cost deficit to make and copy right infringement, I would redesign it by allowing it to least carry two vamps, so that would be longer and certainly make it would better quality plastic. 5o Cals. would be on the front.
Now i am just a kid but every time i go to my grama and grandpa i see my dads old W.H.A.L.E Hovercraft and i loved to play with it and i still love it.
i have to admit, as a kid i drooled over the whale in catalogs and never got to realize that desire... until after nearly 28 years i finally got one nearly complete via ebay for around $20 last month! i lllloooovvvvveeee iiiiiitttttt!!!!!! and it of course looks great in my 6x4x4 vintage joe diorama!
Great video! The WHale was my favorite toy as well. It survived so many creek bed battles and I still have it. Great idea on stripping it down and cleaning it out.
I repaired my vanes with OD green duct tape. I have a full unbroken set in case I ever sell it, but the more play friendly ones are on it when displayed.
My neighbor across the street had that when I was growing up. He was a little bit older than me, and had a lot of the early GI Joe stuff. My GI Joe collection was more stuff from later series. I grew up in Rhode Island, and my uncle actually worked for Hasbro for about little while. I asked him about getting me the Killer Whale, but it was before his time and he wasn't familiar with it. It really was the ultimate GI Joe vehicle, and I was always so jealous of my neighbor.
Wow, your channel is fast becoming a favorite...great job. I had the WHALE, and unfortunatley living in Florida we didnt have creeks to put it in..we had Kitchen sink, bathtub or dangerous rock pit lake or canal that if you toss in the WHALE say goodbye lol. I am almost contemplating starting a collection based on your channel...keep up the good work!
Defiantly one of my favourite toys that I never owned. I had a couple friends with this one and it was a beast of a toy as a kid. Was great for playing and pretending your lawn was some huge grassy swamp. Having friends come over with this and using all the boats to have battles with was so much fun. Many a depth charge was lost in my yard.
Watching this made me relive my childhood. I remember when I got my Killer Whale, it was the best day of my life. I never was able to float it on water but I didn't mind. Thanks for the memories!
I missed out on a lot of popular vehicles but was and am proud to have had a Whale. I used to go to toy store and just look at the box until I got it for Christmas. I mean, this thing actually worked in the water.
A shame they don't make toys like these anymore. My favorite was the hydrofoil, which I've manned with my hunter dream team of storm shadow, spirit, low light, tunnel rat, outback, hydrofoil driver, and snake-eyes on the gun turret!
AAAARRRGGGHH, I just bought a W.H.A.L.E. G I Joe was the best toy line because of the details of the toys, along with their construction, were above and beyond anything of that era. The amount of damage that these toys were subjected to and still were playable is completely out of the realm of today's toys.YES, I know that some were brittle, but for the most part they held up well. The gliders actually glided, the boats floated, the planes.. crashed and survived, what more could a child want.
Totally agree! I actually am (because I happen to have enough clean spare parts) building one "clean" , and one battle worn , yet completed as I watch your awesome videos! Keep the videos coming!
I remember mine was black and red. Turns out I had the "Night Force" Toys R Us version..I had so much fun with it and now that I know that it was an exclusive, I wish I would have kept it.
Never had the W.H.A.L.E., but the Warthog APC was a nice substitute for me. I remember working at Toys R Us when it came out, and when it was released it was hard to keep in stock. Fortunately, it was in a flyer that coincided with payday, and I was able to grab one.
Wow! I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed the "hovercraft", especially the depth charges. And indeed, I used it as a massive troop transport. I also agree it was more awesome than the aircraft carrier--I had a lot of Joe, but the aircraft carrier was (both literally and figuratively) never on the table. I think my only exposure to the aircraft carrier was from a Sears catalog. Funny you call the hovercraft "early Joe", since from my perspective, it was "late Joe", toward the end of my collection. But, yeah, nostalgia has taken me back to a lot of toys, but the Joes after the mid-80s are so "flamboyant" that I'm leaving GI Joe to my memories. That being said, I don't care for the movies putting the joes all in identical body suits.
>BLINK< How tha hell did I miss this back then? It could have been EASILY adapted to Star Wars/Battlestar Galactica/Buck Rogers use. Odds are, they didn't let it across the border into Mississippi, so my ignorance is understandable. GREAT new series, Bro!
even as a young child, I found the neon color scheme of the later toys to be wildly off-putting... nothing beats the grays/browns and olive drabs of the early toys! I love how you've restored this toy - it looks spectacular!
great review. I had this as a kid here in uk they called it actionforce that was the stickers on the side. I found the wheels came of underneath the hovercraft also. as well as the fins on the back
It seemed obvious to me that the Terror Drome had a force field over it. Which I guess that had to momentarily disable in order to launch the rocket thingy. The more I think about it, the less sense it makes. So I'm going to stop thinking about it now. But now I'm realizing that the Command Center had essentially the same problem. ACK! BTW, you're also spot-on about how the pre-'86 toys had the coolest, most believable look. They were knocking it out of the park from 83-85!
I want this so bad. Until I acquired it, the Cobra Rattler and GI Joe Skystriker especially were the vehicles I wanted since I was cheated out of it Christmas '86. I opened the Skystriker box and it was missing half the components. I had to settle for the Conquest X-30 since KayBee didn't have any Skystrikers in stock.
Yep, very cool toy from back in the day and one of those I wish I had gotten as a kid. The *G.I. Joe* toyline was best from '82 to '85, after that it did get corny with the sci-fi stuff and neon troopers.
I loved that you got it for Cristmas only problem I had is I put it together wrong and the recon sled did not work properly and ended up having a hole in front which leaked lol but absoultly one of my favorites
i bought this after your review 350 bux nz but worth it as a kid i didnt even know they made this but by far this is my fave in my collection thanks heaps for swaying me to click buy now
So what was this 'Home Depot Ingenuity'? What 'unconventional method' did you employ to restore the steering veins? Its mentioned in passing but not described. It would be very helpful if you would describe what you did as I (and many other Joe collectors, I'm sure) would like to restore their steering veins as well. Thanks!
hi, I have a question. I have two terror dromes with two different problems, I have my original t.d., but it is dirty, the white is really dirty, buy not yellow, have you ever broke one down to clean? and what would you use for cleaning? my second problem is the one I bought about 15 years ago that was mint in box, I kept this one in the shipping box, and in my den for ten years, I kept it out of light, but the other day I opened it up and there are small lines of yellow running down the inner part, any idea how to remove the yellow? the one in box is clean, super clean and I hate the yellow, any ideas or suggestions would help out a lot, thanks
You totally nailed it here. The WHALE was by FAR the Joe vehicle I enjoyed most. The FLAGG was just big, and it totally overrated (my parents wouldn't go as far as living with a 7' plastic aircraft carrier, so my opinion on this is based on the one my friend had. It was a big plastic table more than anything else). Sadly, I think mine got garage-saled some years ago (grrrr) - along with the other holy grail toy, the Terror Drome!
I’m new to your channel so I apologize for the late comment. I loved this toy when I was younger, and am now wondering if it survived in my parents attic somewhere. Last time I looked through old toys was about 20 years ago and the rubber bands holding cobra commander together had dry rotted and he fell apart when I picked it up. I didn’t dare touch any other figures after that. A good majority of figures had broken thumbs. Might take a look over there and post whatever I still have on eBay.
Anthony Condegni That's the Amphibious Personnel Carrier (APC). The front of the box mentioned it holds 28 G.I. Joe Soldiers. The camouflaged top with gun turret was removable and it did indeed float. You can find plenty of APC images atwww.yojoe.com/vehicles/83/apc/
Thank u for the prompt response. I would luv to locate one at a garage sale..I once traveled 8 and half hours to buy an original fifefly..when I got to his house his left thumb was broken..I was so angered but I sucked it up gave him the 90 bucks...it did have all his accessories though
Seriously, why would you _screw_ huge, brass piano hinges on this? Some clear sellotape or equivalent on either side would make a long-lasting live hinge that is next to invisible.
In my opinion, no G.I. Joe collection could be considered ever complete without the Killer Whale, you can do without the USS Flagg but not without the Killer Whale.
The Flagg is massive, but honestly I don't think it has as much play value as a lot of other GI Joe toys. It works much better as a collector's display pience IMHO.
Ha! Yes, while I was in the real army, I gave my mom the OK to give away my Joe vehicles. I still have the figures and the... triple-A anti-aircraft gun that Hasbro gave away if you collected enough proofs of purchase. Sigh!
+Tim Hammack , like you I am in the real Army (I am in the Reserve right now) but before I had any sort of say my dad threw my joes away at the Dump in the 1980's!!!! He just didn't get it!
+valo smoke, To be fair to my old man, he's dead (he'd be 80), but he didn't "get it", I think he threw them away because some of them "seemed broken" to him despite having playability, and to him if they were "left outside" that was equal to "being thrown away" (even though that's where we played with them). I had a metal tractor trailer I used to "park" on our planter behind a bush, nope, not parked, thrown away! He was old, he forgot what it was like to be a kid is all. :(
Hi Valo Smoke, I want my Matchbox Diecast Lion Voltron back! I mowed a lot of lawns for that! My mom meant well, but didn't realize the sentimental attachment I had for Voltron. She saved my Joe figures. I have to blame myself for my boat, because I carelessly told her to "get rid of it all" from an army payphone. But I didn't contemplate that "all" included "Voltron" !
you know whats bullshit I got a mint in the box windraider with stickers off had it put together was having it on a shelf decided to kinda play with it was being very careful thought ited be funny to put starwars guys in it for a animated movie I was filming went to adjust one of the wings and the son of a bitch snaped right off pissed me off bought it on ebay had one already with a wing broken used super glue on that one and be damed if it didn't come off again my question is whats the best way to repair those wings also should vintage toys be stored at room tempeture cause I did have it out in a room were it went from cold to hot and so forth
I started collecting the gi Joe's as they came out in 1982, I had a huge collection, I packed it up when went away to college, after college I came home to pick up all my joes, and they were all gone. Yoda Pagoda I also remember around xmas...i always saw Gi Joe boxes of vehicles in the 80s from the neiborhood kids!...crazy!
One of the BEST G. I. JOE Vehicles I received from my mom when I was little Memories that last a lifetime seeing these videos .
Do Not Give IN !!! Keep It UP !!
Hasbro keeps re-releasing the HISS and Skystriker, but the WHALE is what they need to re-release.
TJ347 I knowwww.....release the Whale again already with better plastic parts!!!
The main reason Hasbro likely won't re release the Whale is because of cost deficit to make and copy right infringement, I would redesign it by allowing it to least carry two vamps, so that would be longer and certainly make it would better quality plastic. 5o Cals. would be on the front.
Im 37 and i love GIJOE TO Death , best toy every made , best cartoon , and the killer was a good one , but mine was the cobra raven
Ohh yea the raven was butta dog..my favorite too and then came the rattler
Comics were better than the show
Michael, I’m literally watching all of your GI joe content. Great videos!
The hovercraft and Tomahawk were absolutely the best!
Now i am just a kid but every time i go to my grama and grandpa i see my dads old W.H.A.L.E Hovercraft and i loved to play with it and i still love it.
That is an amazing restoration job. Looks fabulous!
i have to admit, as a kid i drooled over the whale in catalogs and never got to realize that desire... until after nearly 28 years i finally got one nearly complete via ebay for around $20 last month! i lllloooovvvvveeee iiiiiitttttt!!!!!! and it of course looks great in my 6x4x4 vintage joe diorama!

Im from R.I and hold a special place in my heart for Hasbro!!

The home depot thing is funny dude. Respect
Watching this made me relive my childhood. I remember when I got my Killer Whale, it was the best day of my life. I never was able to float it on water but I didn't mind. Thanks for the memories!
I had this when I was a kid. I loved that it could float and it often found itself in the bathtub for a huge battle with cobra.
I got this for my 8th birthday. Awesome toy, wish I still had all my Joe's.
Awesome. With the oil rig whatever it was and the shark good times. We lived on an acre on Vancouver Island. Massive gijoe battles
Oooo, I would have loved to have that vehicle! I wish I could go back in time!
I remember getting this for Christmas...MAN was I stoked...
I missed out on a lot of popular vehicles but was and am proud to have had a Whale. I used to go to toy store and just look at the box until I got it for Christmas. I mean, this thing actually worked in the water.
Cutter had a Red Sox hat because he was from Massachusetts! Fantastic detail from Larry Hama and RI-based Hasbro.
Cutter is from Kansas. The whole joke was that he was a Water soldier that from the place furthest from the water.
File card says otherwise.
I also got this for Christmas I loved that thing 😀
A shame they don't make toys like these anymore. My favorite was the hydrofoil, which I've manned with my hunter dream team of storm shadow, spirit, low light, tunnel rat, outback, hydrofoil driver, and snake-eyes on the gun turret!
I think I got it that same Christmas with that same haircut wearing that same shirt.
AAAARRRGGGHH, I just bought a W.H.A.L.E.

I had this... It was favorite toy as a kid for a long time. I traded it for an original millennium falcon, still as a kid.
Oh, hell yeah! I've still got mine too; vehicle and playset in one kick-ass package! YO JOE!!!
This is one of my favorites. My brother got it and I would always play with it. XD This one needs a reissue! C'mon, HASBRO!
I loved the WHALE. I don’t think I owned it but had friends who did. Loved all the practicality and functionality
All of your videos are awesome! My best friend had the GIJOE Hovercraft and I had the swimming pool Good Times!
I remember those big Sears and jcpenny Christmas catalogs and dream.
I love the Killer Whale. I wish I had the space to display mine.
My absolute favorite vehicle in the line
The WHALE is a badass toy. Nice restoration, Michael.
I remember mine was black and red. Turns out I had the "Night Force" Toys R Us version..I had so much fun with it and now that I know that it was an exclusive, I wish I would have kept it.
got this for my 10th birthday, best birthday ever
This is honestly a really good vehicle
Amazing toy would have loved this as a kid.
I owned this. Had a ton of fun with it. Sold it to a kid down the street when I moved away. I should've kept it.... :(
just love all your awsome reviews.....
Never had the W.H.A.L.E., but the Warthog APC was a nice substitute for me. I remember working at Toys R Us when it came out, and when it was released it was hard to keep in stock. Fortunately, it was in a flyer that coincided with payday, and I was able to grab one.
Thanks for this review of the killer whale I just finished my restoration and did the same thing with the steering vanes you did. Thanks for the idea.
Hasbro's toys were huge!

Those hinges on the steering vanes should be airbrushed olive-drab. They would blend in much better!
Had it, loved it. The minibike was odd.
AWESOME review dude thanks for the upload

My cousin had this and it was awesome
Retroblasting Dude your Awesome I've Manage to keep Some of my early Childhood GI Joes" you must be around my Age to have vintage GiJoes from the 80s
Hands down the best gijoe vehicle

Thanks Timothy! Very inventive method! I was thinking maybe they just used olive drag electrical tape! Pretty neat!

I passed on one 90% percent complete at a toy show Sunday, $20 I kind of regret not getting it now.
Ian Pokluda 20 bucks??? your a moron!!
I had this

BTW, I'd paint the brass hinges OD green or black to better blend in with the colour ;-)
I agree with what you havwe to say about thegijoe killer whale. When I finally got mine 100% complete i wasw an amazinglooking vehicle.
Wat was the name of joes transport vehicle? It held like 20 joes in it and the camo top came off and i think it flooded too
Anthony Condegni That's the Amphibious Personnel Carrier (APC).
Anthony Condegni U travelled 8 hours for a figure that cost you 90 bucks??? your an idiot! Ever hear of Ebay?
Thank you!
Wow man...had no idea someone could be so serious about their Yo Joes!
how large was the Killer Whale dimension wise
Really good review
I had the later all black version of the W.H.A.L.E.
+carguy53 Night Force!
great video..I agree great toy..but I think the terror drome was most impressive !
que genial juguete
The wheels on the bottom are often missing.
Seriously, why would you _screw_ huge, brass piano hinges on this? Some clear sellotape or equivalent on either side would make a long-lasting live hinge that is next to invisible.
this will be a great sub seies, the whale is awsome one ive never had, also the early vehicles were definatlly the best and more realistic.
The aircraft carrier? Oh no, it was the cobra terror drome that ruled supreme.
+terrorball2000 Firebat.
In my opinion, no G.I. Joe collection could be considered ever complete without the Killer Whale, you can do without the USS Flagg but not without the Killer Whale.
You want the Flagg. You need the Flagg. You have to explain it to the wife why you spent so much! 😆 The whale is awesome.
Hello Mr retro am also a collector and a retorter i just join your channel
I was disappointed that the hovercraft did not hover in my bathtube. IT SANK :(
The Flagg is massive, but honestly I don't think it has as much play value as a lot of other GI Joe toys. It works much better as a collector's display pience IMHO.
The Tactical Battle Platform is the superior playset if we are talking strictly play. Mine got so much use.
I dropped mine down the stairs in 1988
I had one when it first come out but sadly shot it up an air rifle. Still have Cutter though.
But is it BPA free?
I only have the missiles XD
I wondered what Mike Mussina was up to since he retired.
i want my boat back ..man
Ha! Yes, while I was in the real army, I gave my mom the OK to give away my Joe vehicles. I still have the figures and the... triple-A anti-aircraft gun that Hasbro gave away if you collected enough proofs of purchase. Sigh!

Sorry you’re wrong it was star wars by Kenner please get you facts right tut tut tut
I had one wish they would re-release it !
PLASTIC FANTASTIC!! Great idea for a sub-series!
