Love the final product. I'm restoring a 1964 Delivery Van and the front is steel. Would this work?
Slate Black will work on any bare steel. If you have any areas that have bondo or anything like that it will not react, but if it is all bare steel, it will work. With bigger surfaces, flash rusting can be difficult to manage. I would look at the Black Magic videos as well, those do not want to rust as quickly.
Hi again. I followed the steps and tried to apply the clear coat but had a few issues. 1. the clear coat has dried white in a few places, why? and 2. A hair fell into it and removing it caused some streaks that wont cover up. Can i sand these out and reapply?
1. Typically it is cause by trapping moisture in under the clear coat. 2. Depending on the clear coat yes you can sand it out gently or sometimes you can just reapply. Give us a call and we can make sure we get you the proper answers for you job specific case though. 760 432 8242

No but if you want to blacken stainless steel take a look at our Stainless Black video. So it is possible, but this is not the video to show you how to blacken stainless steel.
Hi, I’m following all the steps but after the sacrificial coat when yours is looking almost golden min just black. How can I encourage the brown parts to appear?
If your goal is a brown finish, I might suggest taking a look at either Japanese Brown or Rustic Brown. Those will be a more reliable way to develop a brown patina on steel.

@@sculptnouveau I follow the steps exactly but as I said after your sacrificial coat and water it looks golden. Then you add the second coat which adds more black but keeps the brown parts poking through.
When I do the sacrificial coat it is almost pure black after neutralising with water. My end result is dark black with blue hues

What if it's a 3d and a vertical piece and can not be laid down, how do you control the drips and make it even?

Can I use this technique on an antique bathtub? Will the clear coat hold up?
Yes the technique would work but I would be careful about the clear coat. While Ever Clear is a good clear coat, any surface meant to be submersed in water regularly is a tough environment to protect.
What would the patina stain look like without the slate black underneath?
Patina Stains on their own are transparent, except for a few opaque ones like the Bronze, Brass, Copper, Silver, and Rust. So on its own over steel, it would be a light grey and it would build up into black as you apply more coats.
Would denatured alcohol work instead of the isopropyl?

Is it advisable to use the patina before or after fabricating/welding your piece?
Great questions, it really depends on what you are building. Sometimes its unavoidable and you have to weld after a patina. Whenever given the option however, I always fabricate and weld and then patina or finish the piece. So much easier if you can get it done that way.

What patina stain product was the one used at the end? Just the standard black patina? Could you do a combination of slate black and a final light coat of the black patina? (Followed by the sealer)
Yes just the Black Patina Stain was used at the end. Yes, a traditional patina and then a patina stain works very well together.
Was the final "patina stain" picture a combination of Slate Black then Black Patina Stain, or just Black Patina Stain?
The Final picture had Slate Black Patina with Black Patina Stain over the top.
