クレイやメアシャウムといったパイプに比べ、キャラバッシュパイプは丈夫で壊れにくいという、パイプの素材としては理想的な特性をもち、高級パイプに分類されます。
瓢箪とメシャムを使ってつくられたキャラバッシュパイプの構造は、内側が空洞になっているために煙が遊び、クールスモーキングが楽しめることが魅力のひとつとなっています。
また、喫うほどにタバコのジュースが瓢箪の内壁に染み込み、パイプの色が黄色から琥珀色、そして赤茶へと深い色艶に変化していくので、パイプ所有者が二代目、三代目代わっても長く楽しむことができます。

白い陶器と呼んでいた部分は海泡石(メシャム)ですよ。メシャムパイプで使われている石です。瓢箪(ひょうたん)の空洞がチャンバーになって煙が冷やされてクールスモーキングが出来る高級パイプです。
