    Buona sera, Ric! I'm watching this while at work because I'm so excited to be in Italy in a few weeks. Italy has hundreds if not thousands of these little towns, and they're all so beautiful. If I ever had the chance to move there I would have the hardest time to find a town to settle in. Thank you so much for providing great video all the time!

      Cynde) Buona sera to you - indeed, as I'm discovering more and more of these towns I'm making a kind of "list" of the most suitable to retire once I'll be ready (MANY years from now on). I have a few on the palm on my hands though already)
      Always glad they are enjoyed - it's also a relief for me to film them and to escape my daily life actually. Buon weekend and wrote to you yesterday in private

    Watching this from a beautiful city (not naming it, but it's not in Italy) with grand buildings. But I still am drawn to these small unknown Italian towns with their up and down small lanes. They have so much character. And little touches like the plants and cute nativity scenes and Madonnas make it more special. Just gazing out to the green countryside is also special. So Riccardo, thanks again for sharing your walks 🤗🙏

      Crime rate indeed 0 in those towns as far as I can see (live in one and always have) even though from time to time there is that bad news about something happening. Humans after all. I suspect it could snow there but very seldom... at 450m above sea level definitely maybe 1 day a year. In my town, at 550, it could snow a few days , but just some cm and all. Not much )

    question: with the town's 1500 year history, along with other towns you have filmed. , i am fascinated by the walkways, stairs and rubble walls and the well laid walls. do you know whether the town keeps the same building patterns and restores them periodically or are the well kept architectural features relatively new. ? they look old. are the kept up from the old or new because of the drainage in the walkways etc. i do see the utility hook ups on the walls. just wondering how the town copes with time in staying the same or changing? any thought?

    • @StillWanderer
      @StillWanderer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting question actually Ellen. I can't speak directly about Roccantica, but for instance, in my little town south of Rome, most of the building are from the 13th century, some 16th, some were rebuilt over time over the previous ones due to earthquakes etc. The most recent were built in the 30s here after another earthquake. But I suspect that most are from that era, but perhaps built on pre-existing structures. The patterns I'm sure never changed and stayed the same. It's an interesting question that I hope some historian or some architects would answer better! I'm curious too actually

    BEN POSIZIONATO il nome di questa bella e iluminata cittadina. Sembra che le loro case, le loro strade, i loro muri, le loro pietre, i loro mattoni e persino il cielo siano stati ripuliti con lo spolverino. Sembra una città semplice, ma per la configurazione e l'intreccio delle sue case, per quello che poteva esserci al loro interno, per i suoi e diversi livelli, per la sue luce, per i suoi dintorni, doveva essere una Città molto divertente.
    Aprire un cancello di ferro leggero, per continuare il viaggio, è come passare da un atmosfere all'altra, essere, allo stesso tempo, la stessa...Guarda il paessagio verde e ampio di Roccantica, attraverso la finestra di pietra, senza vetri, della Torre dell'Orologio, dopo aver visto i nomi dei caduti in guerra, è come tornare dalla morte alla vita.
    Fine relassante del video, con la fresca brezza che soffia dolcemente sulla vegetazione di Roccantica.
    Bella giornata, benedetto Sole. " Che vita riposante di chi fugge lontano dal rumore mondano, di chi segue il sentiero nascosto dei pochi saggi che sono stati nella vita"
    Un saluto, Riccardo Laziale del Tirreno.

    • @StillWanderer

      Caro Juan, questa volta ti rispondo con un po' di ritardo, visto che sono longano dall'Italia al momento, ma finalmente ho preso qualche giorno di "evasione"... ma la stessa "evasione" l'ho avuta proprio quel giorno a Roccantica , descritta così poeticamente nel tuo commento. Il messaggio ed il passo del momento in cui andavo oltre quel cancello di ferro verso la torre è davvero toccante e realistico... un paese come dici tu, una città semplice ma divertente. Cerco sempre di inquadrare sia le chiese che i monumenti ai caduti per ricordarci che essi sono persone... non sono soltanto nomi. Erano ragazzi che ormai non ricorda più nessuno, neanche i loro parenti. Bella Roccantica, poetica, gioiosa, assolata, riposante, calma ma anche viva nella sua storia e negli incontri avvenuti in qualche angolo (qualche bambino, qualche madre, qualche signora che passeggiava). Finita con quei pochi minuti di relax guardando la valle, pensavo davvero che sarebbe stato il modo ideale per finire la camminata di quel giorno. Bei ricordi.
      Ti abbraccio con affetto caro Juan, come sempre, e come sempre ti aspetto e spero di rileggerti qui, come tra amici.
      Riccardo Laziale del Tirreno

    "Roccaantica" probably just means "ancient fortress" -as the word "rocca" refers to a fortress = usually on a hill.

    • @StillWanderer
      @StillWanderer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Happy to see you again dear Kalo! I thought the same Kalo , but then I found out here it could derive from the term "anticus" that in latin means "it stands in front" - hard to say . I always wanted to ask you... does your nick name relate to the Sator square? :)

    • @kaloarepo288
      @kaloarepo288 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@StillWanderer Actually someone else has asked me the same question, a few years ago -and I had never heard of the sator square but now I know. Actually, as I am a bit of an opera buff it actually means "beautiful opera" -kalo is Greek for beauty and "arepo" is opera backwards. Being in Italy you probably know of the origins of opera in 16th century Florence when they were trying to revive ancient Greek plays and someone came up with the idea that the story was sung and not spoken. One of the inventors was the father of the famous scientist Galileo -his father Vincenzo was a musician and theoretician on the lute. Opera took off largely in Venice where it became a popular art form -there were up to 20 opera houses in Venice during the 18th century and the art form has become extremely influential with modern spin offs like the musical and when you think of it movies especially epics like "Lord of the Rings" are a form of opera -that orchestral music in the background and all that!

    • @StillWanderer
      @StillWanderer  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kaloarepo288 Ah now I understand the arepo word. Kalos... of course. Studied 8 years in classical school when I was a child/kid and ancient greek and latin were our main topics (these days they are considered like a waste of study and time unfortunately...)
      Indeed, the Opera and its history is fascinating and so rich. I'm definitely not an expert in this topic, as my main hobby is history (contemporary mostly) but history is history and a part also of this hobby in writing it in every tiny town. Near where I live was born Giovanni da Palestrina!

      Lieber Frank, schön, dich sowohl hier als auch per E-Mail zu sehen! Ich hoffe, Ihnen hat das Video von Roccantica gefallen - ein sehr verlassenes Dorf, wenig bekannt, aber meiner Meinung nach ein verstecktes Juwel.
