I have a photo of me playing this on the road in 1969. We nailed it but all the credit goes to the geniuses who wrote and arranged this masterpiece. The Ventures forever!
The Ventures surely caught that surfing wave and rode it brilliantly! And the great overlooked component of their success was consistently excellent drumming that so powerfully propelled the whole band!
Absolutely was my favorite guitar instrumental ever. From the first time I heard it, I couldn't play it enough. I had a SilverTone guitar (originally form Sears, ha!) and a little amp. I wanted to play this one so much, but was barely literate on which string was which. I got some Music Minus 1 LP's and learned all the Ventures stuff I could find. That helped alot. I was finally was able to figure out most of what they were playing! It just all fell in place one afternoon. I played it over and over and over that day until my parents MADE me stop. And Diamond Head is still the absolute BEST! Love it.
That is just all but EXACTLY my experience with this song by this band. I was a boy possessed! With a Harmony guitar and a amp that I built from a kit. I too played to Music - 1 for Ventures tunes, over and over and over an ... But I don't remember ever finding one for Diamond Head. It was heartbreaking. (DId you find one for DH??) and then, after weeks of lame tries, it did just kind of happen. It was the arpeggios on the Ami figure that I just didn't get, until suddenly, somehow, it seemed that I did just play them. I went to some teenage Heaven! Love your story! Thanks for posting. We can't be the only two you know!
Just as an FYI, the song is overdubbed and they are not really playing that song in particular. It's still worth watching because I love these guys! They are part of the soundtrack of my life!
Penetration + Pipeline = Diamond Head. Put those three in any order you'd like. It still adds up to three monster classic instrumentals cut from the same expensive cloth. Magnificent.
damn, I love The Ventures. The very first tape I had was when I was about 12 or 13 The Ventures Live in Japan, and it was an 8 track tape. I played it so much, just loved them.
This is SO EPIC at a completely different level. I want to travel back in time to watch it Live..This one song epitomises the coolness of 60s. BLESS YOU ROBERT VARGA for uploading🙏🙏🙏
Diamond Head sold 1,850,000 records in Japan alone. It was selling at the rate of 70,000 per week in Chicago but Liberty Records, having other interests, never pushed the record so it only peaked at #70 in the USA.
On this day in 1965 {February 10th} the Ventures performed "Diamond Head" on the ABC-TV program 'Shindig!'... Eleven days earlier on January 30th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #70 and spent 3 weeks on the Top 100... The group's drummer from 1962 to 1996, Mel Taylor, passed away on August 11th, 1996 at the age of 62... R.I.P. Mr. Taylor and Jimmy O'Neill {Shindig's host, 1940 - 2013}...
You have wonderful memories Even in a place like India The bands were playing venture s music with the poorest of Indian amplifiers and home made guitars Couldnt afford the foreign equipment
I have always loved this entire genre of instrumental rock. The Ventures were among the best. I just wish they'd have never listened to whoever told them to add that sway-from-side-to-side choreography.
Still this make me chill out in 2020 there are so many equipment which can enhance the tune significantly but these guys performed so well in that time hast off to ventures ♥️ The real legends ♥️♥️

I have dozens of their albums. Many different musical genres. All are splendid. If you were a guitar player, they were indespensible for decades. Try their latin and Bethoven albums. A little bit of me died with Bob, Mel and Nokie. Don's still hanging in and doing well! Mel's son Leon plays percussion for the current touring band. Thanks!

This song is quite fun and peppy, and would sit anyone’s feet to dancing.
Excellent 1965 Vintage of black and white video
